ASARCO Ray Copper Mine operates a fleet of 39 haul trucks, including 21 Liebherr T 282s. These 400-ton ultra-class trucks have 3,600-horsepower engines and operate 22 hours a day, seven days a week, in some of the harshest conditions of the Southwest U.S. The challenging environment in which these trucks work and the nearly non-stop nature of the operation can stress engines significantly, resulting in costly unplanned maintenance or devastating failures. ASARCO has instituted a stringent preventative maintenance programme that includes Chevron engine oil. Hours Oil oxidation test The test is run at 171 C and measures the hours to rapid oxygen intake which relates to how long the oil lasts before sludge and deposits can cause harmful wear and potential component failure. Chevron and ASARCO agreed to inspect one 20V MTU 4000 engine that had delivered 21,900 hours of service with 500-hour drain intervals. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) has operated its Batu Hijau copper-gold mine on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa since The company s fleet of 111 Caterpillar 793 haul trucks runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, under harsh mining conditions. To protect this significant investment, PTNNT turned to Chevron lubricants. The haul trucks are powered by Cat 3516 engines and typically experience 500-hour oil drains and 12,000-hour coolant service cycles. In late 2011 after 18,600 hours of demanding service, one of the engines was completely stripped down and inspected. After inspecting and rating all the parts of this engine, it was clear that the Chevron products were meeting the customer s requirements for engine durability, reliability and reduced operating costs.
