IDOT Replacement and Upgrading For consistency, the same guidelines will be applied to all routes under Illinois Department of Transportation jurisdiction. 6
Replacement of Hardware (Proactive) Agencies are urged to establish a process to replace existing highway safety hardware that has not been successfully tested to NCHRP Report 350 or later criteria. (Proactive) 7
Upgrade Totaled Hardware Reactive 8 Agencies are encouraged to upgrade existing highway safety hardware to comply with the 2016 edition of MASH either when it becomes damaged beyond repair, or when an individual agency's policies require an upgrade to the safety hardware. (Reactive)

Adjusting the Layout for the Selected Traffic Barrier Terminal(s) 200 ft ft ft 33 End of Parapet Suppose the Contractor chooses a different terminal than assumed in the plans. Its length of need begins at ft from Post 1. It provides ft length of need and this is a splice location. First attempt to place its BLON at the plan length of need point. Splice to Type 1 End of Type 1 (Post 1)
Adjusting the Layout for the Selected Traffic Barrier Terminal(s) 200 ft 36.9 ft ft ft End of Parapet End of Type 6 (Splice) The Type 6 terminal does not move. Plot it. Note that the Type 6 also ends at a splice location. Splice to Type 1 End of Type 1 (Post 1) 34

New BDE Special Provision TRAFFIC BARRIER TERMINAL, TYPE 1 SPECIAL (BDE) Effective: January 1, 2017 Revise Article of the Standard Specifications to read: Traffic Barrier Terminal, Type 1 Special (Tangent) and Traffic Barrier Terminal, Type 1 Special (Flared). These terminals shall meet the testing criteria contained in either NCHRP Report 350 or MASH. In addition to meeting the criteria in one or both of these references, the terminals shall be on the Department s qualified product list. The terminal shall be installed according to the manufacturer s specifications. The beginning length of need point of the terminal shall be placed within 12 ft 6 in (3.8 m) of the length of need point shown on the plans. The terminal shall be delineated with a terminal marker direct applied. No other guardrail delineation shall be attached to the terminal section NOTE: No longer requires the Type 1 to provide 37.5 ft of length of need. Actual proprietary terminal length will be paid for. Qualified Product List will be updated to include this length.
