In preparation for your checkout flight, answer all of the following questions as thoroughly as possible using the airplane s POH and the aircraft flight manual supplements. 1. 3 28. What happens if the airplane is parked on an unlevel surface and the fuel selector is not in the right or left position? Fuel will crossfeed, filling one tank, then may begin leaking out the fuel vent. 29. Does this airplane have a fire extinguisher and, if so, where is it located? Yes, it is mounted beneath the pilot seat 30. When should the auxiliary fuel pump be used? Test during runup, or when fuel pressure falls below 0.5 psi, or during the engine failure emergency procedures 31. How many fuel drains are there, and where are they located? One in each wing and one under the engine 32. How would an alternator malfunction be indicated? High voltage light may illuminate if over charging, or Ammeter will show battery discharge, dimming of panel lights, failure of electrical instruments, Aspen indicates it is using back up battery power. 33. What is the corrective action for alternator failure? Turn off avionics bus, check circuit breakers, then cycle alternator switch. If alternator is still failing, turn off all non essential electrical equipment and land as soon as possible 34. Is there a danger of losing engine power if the alternator fails? No. 35. What instruments will be affected by an alternator failure? The turn coordinator (which provides info to the autopilot), the Aspen ( it does have a 30 min battery backup ) and the avionics stack 36. How would you know if the vacuum system failed? The vacuum pump gauge will read zero, the vacuum pump warning light will illuminate, and the back up AI will fail. 37. What instruments will be affected by a vacuum failure? The back up Attitude Indicator 38. How long will the internal battery in the Aspen last in the event of a complete electrical failure? Up to 30 minutes 39. When should the mixture be leaned? During ground ops and above 3000 feet MSL 40. What is the procedure for leaning the mixture for Best Economy? Lean to Peak EGT at 65% power 41. What is the procedure for leaning the mixture for Best Power? Lean to 50 rich of Peak EGT at 75% power 42. When should the mixture be enriched for descent and landing? As soon as engine temp begins to rise or engine becomes rough 43. In flight, the engine is becoming increasingly rough and you are seeing a drop in manifold pressure. 4 44. How do you select and sync the Aspen heading indicator to your present heading? Press and hold the right knob 45. You are northbound over Mt Soledad navigating Direct To OCN using the GNS530W. You have selected in the GNS530 Nav 1 frequency. Your HSI CDI (course indicator) is pointing to a heading of 326. How do you know if the Aspen is using the Nav 1 frequency or the GPS as the primary navigational source? How do you change it? The primary navigation source is displayed at the bottom center of the HSI. It can be cycled through Nav1 GPS 1Nav 2 and GPS2 by pressing the CDI button (the center button right below the display) 46. How do you remove the map and navigational points from the Aspen HSI display? Press the Map hot key (second one down on the right) 47. How do you dim the Aspen display for night flying? Press the Menu key, push the left knob to select BRT ADJUST, rotate the left knob to adjust brightness, press menu. 48. Is the aircraft legal to fly if the Aspen is inoperative? Yes, if the back up instruments are operative 49. Name three sources for determining your present heading while enroute: Wet compass, GNS530W (shows ground track), Aspen HSI 50. How do you find the nearest airport using the GPS? Press the Direct To Key, then turn the large right knob to select the nearest airport displayed in the NRST box, then press ENT twice. Or, dial the large right knob all the way to the right to display a list of nearest airports 51. How do you determine if GNS530W is in VLOC mode or GPS mode? GPS or VLOC is displayed right above the CDI button in the lower left corner 52. What s the quickest way to set the GNS530W back to the NAV 1 screen? Press and hold the CLR key 53. How do you set an extended center line to a runway using the Direct to function on the GNS530W. Press the Direct To button, select the airport identifier, then use the large right knob to scroll down to the CRS window and use the small right knob to enter the runway heading (e.g.: 281 for MYF), then press ENT 54. Do you need to switch the Garmin 330 transponder from standby to ALT upon takeoff? It does it automatically 55. Describe the clock functions of the Garmin 330. Press the FUNC button to cycle between the count up, count down, and elapsed flight time Use the cursor button to allow number entries. 56. How do you turn on and off the audible traffic warning from the Garmin 530? (sort of a trick question because this is a not in the POH or supplements. Make a note to ask your CFI.) 5 57. When will traffic set off the Garmin 330 traffic alert when it is in NORM mode? A target that will intersect your flight path within 30 seconds, or is within.55 miles, or 800 feet vertical separation will set off the alert 58. What traffic will not show up on the traffic warning system? Aircraft without transponders will not show up. The system only works in conjunction with ATC radar coverage so it is inoperative in areas without radar coverage 59. Where is the first place you should look after a traffic alert inside at the screen or outside for the traffic? Look outside first. If not observed, ask ATC for assistance. 60. Does the autopilot hold heading, altitude, or both in this aircraft? Both 61. How do you set VS (vertical speed)? Set the desired VS in the selector, then press VS on the Autopilot head 62. Describe two situations where the autopilot can induce a stall: 1) If the pilot sets VS past the performance of the aircraft it can induce a stall. 2) If the AP is set to hold altitude and the aircraft encounters a sudden downdraft, the AP will attempt to keep the aircraft at altitude and can induce a stall. 63. How do you disengage the autopilot? Press the red AP disengage button on the yoke. Performance: 64. List the airspeeds and power settings for the following operations: Throttle/RPM Normal Takeoff _full throttle_ /Max RPM_ Normal Climb 23 / Normal Cruise / Normal Landing (full flaps) _12-15 / Max RPM Short Field Landing _12-15 / Max RPM Balked Landing/Go Around full throttle_ /Max RPM 65. 6 66. Determine the following information regarding the aircraft takeoff and climb limitations for the following conditions. (note the effects of high density altitude on takeoff and climb performance.) Reference pages 5-12 and 5-27 in the POH Field elevation = 5900 Ft. Altimeter= Temperature = 68 deg. F ( 20 deg. C). Tail wind is 2 kts. Aircraft weight = maximum takeoff weight ( 3100 lbs.) What is the airport pressure altitude =_5900 ft. What is the density altitude of the airport: _8000_ft. What is the minimum runway length needed for: Takeoff?_ 1765 ft.) Landing? 880 ft What is the minimum horizontal distance needed to clear a 50 ft. obstacle: Takeoff?_3795. Landing? 1793 FT 67. Are you likely to get book performance from a 40 year old airplane if you are not a test pilot? No 68. How do you provide a safety margin when calculating performance? Round up (or down) when calculating takeoff and landing distances and don t push the envelope 69. What is the range at 75% power (2400 RPM and full throttle) at 8,000 feet, standard temperature, no wind, with 75 gals useable fuel? 750 miles 70. Describe a normal engine start: Keys In Ignition, Mixture RICH, Prop HIGH RPM, Carb heat (Alt Air) OFF, Prime, one-two pumps, slowly. Throttle - PUMP ONCE if cold, up to 6 times if hot, Leave 1/4 open, Master ON, Clear Area, Ignition START, throttle to 1000 RPM, Check Oil Pressure 71. Describe the procedure for starting the engine if you think it is flooded: Mixture to full lean, throttle full open, crank the engine through a few times, then use normal procedure without priming. If the engine catches while mixture is full lean and throttle is full open, reverse those positions to normal as quickly as possible 72. How do you set the Shadin fuel flow meter to full tanks? Move the FULL/ADD toggle switch to FULL and hold it, then press the ENTER TEST button 73. What information will the Shadin fuel flow meter tell you when you are in flight? 7 Advanced Autopilot users: 1. Describe a procedure for changing altitudes with the autopilot on: Enter a vertical speed (500) in the selector and press the VS button; enter a lower altitude than presently flying in the selector, a vertical speed, and then press VS and tap ALT 2. Describe the procedure for using the S-Tec 55X altitude pre-select for climbing to and leveling off at 10,500 using the auto pilot. Enter the current barometric pressure in the selector, enter the desired altitude in the selector, enter a vertical speed, and then press VS and tap ALT 3. How do you set the autopilot to follow a GPS flight plan so it makes course turns? Program the flight plan in the GNS530W, then activate the AP press NAV twice so GPSS shows in the display 4. When flying an ILS in autopilot, how do you control airspeed? Throttle inputs 5. You are at the OCN VOR flying the VOR A approach which you have loaded into the GNS530W. Will the S-Tec fly turns in the hold automatically? Yes, if you press the OBS button and suspend the approach 6. You are inbound to the VOR from the hold on the VOR A approach at OCN. How do you tell the system not to fly another turn ion the hold and to fly the approach? Press the OBS button on the GNS530W to unsuspend the approach 7. On a missed approach, when flying over the MAP, how do you fly to the next waypoint using the autopilot and GNS530W? At the MAP, press the OBS key to suspend the approach and the next waypoint will automatically be offered as a waypoint. Follow the missed approach procedures for proper climb and heading instructions. Use the HDG setting on the S-Tec and heading bug on Aspen to fly a particular heading, or the Direct to key to fly directly to the waypoint.
