3 Background The vision for our ports work People living and working near ports across the country will breathe cleaner air and live better lives as a result of bold steps taken through a collaboration of industry, government, and communities to improve environmental performance and increase economic prosperity. 3
4 Background EPA s work to improve air quality around ports Regulatory standards for emissions from new trucks, vessels, and equipment as well as sulfur levels in fuels. Non-regulatory partnerships to advance next-generation, clean technologies and practices at ports. 4
5 Partnership on Equivalency Technology Cruise line industry development of exhaust gas scrubbers North American Emission Control Area went into effect in August, 2012 Fuel sulfur standards can be met through the use of equivalent technology such as exhaust gas scrubbers EPA and Coast Guard have worked successfully with Royal Caribbean and Carnival to accelerate the development of exhaust gas scrubber technology These programs have promoted the installation of more than 100 scrubbers on approximately 50 ships 5

11 EPA-Port Everglades Partnership EPA and Port Everglades are working together to develop: An activity-based baseline inventory for Port Everglades facilities and operations Emission reduction scenarios and inventories for future analysis years; and Methods, lessons learned, and practical examples that EPA can share with other ports, related agencies, and stakeholders to support and encourage sustainable development.
