ASTM D 189: Conradson Carbon Residue Measures the residue formed by evaporation and thermal degradation of the oil. The less percentage of carbon residue the better. FTM 3456: Channel Point When a gear passes through the gear oil, the oil flows in behind it filling in the channel left by the gear. This method records the temperature at which the gear oil no longer flows back into the channel. ASTM D 97: Pour Point The lowest temperature at which movement of the fluid is observed is recorded as the pour point. The lower the pour point, the better utility the fluid has for certain applications at low temperature. In order to reduce operating expenses, an initiative to extend engine oil drain intervals was established. The company examined their Shell Rotella Oil, an engine oil from DA lubricants and Certified Labs engine oil. Samples were periodically pulled and sent to Staveley Services for analysis. Spectrographic Analysis, physical properties and contamination tests were performed on the oil samples.
