1 News Release Perkins steps up a Tier with new engine range Perkins engines power more than 800 different machine models. For Perkins, product range is not just about providing an engine of a specific power, but of offering customers a choice of engine configurations and options. Perkins is the Full Range Supplier 56 kw 130 kw 1206E-E70TTA kw ( hp) Engine Model 1204E-E44TTA 800 series 1206E-E66TA kw ( hp) kw ( hp) kw ( hp) kw ( hp) 400 Series 9-50 kw (12 74 hp) 9-56 kw (12 75 hp) kw Perkins latest range to be launched - the 1200 Series - will build on the strengths of the current, immensely popular 1100D series of engines. At the top of the range is a 7 litre, 6-cylinder engine, capable of 225kW, and potentially even higher in some special applications such as combine harvesters. This represents a 21% increase in power output over Perkins current 6.6 litre offering, giving customers who may have chosen a larger engine previously, the choice of the same power from a smaller engine package. The 1206E-E70TTA has two turbochargers one small, one large - mounted in series. The smaller first stage turbo accelerates quickly giving excellent response and torque at low speeds, whilst the larger second stage provides the high airflow required to provide class leading power density.

The poly-vee front-end auxiliary drive has a service interval of six times that of the current system on the 1100 Series range. Hydraulic tappet adjustment has been added which avoids the need to check and adjust valve clearance at 1000 hour intervals, thus saving time and expense for the machine owner. It will also allow machine designers to make better use of the space directly above the engine for mounting other equipment, such as aftertreatment. Though the aftertreatment is typically positioned above the engine, it can in fact be mounted pretty much anywhere on the machine. Aftertreatment will be offered both as an independent canister (non-modular) but also as a tightly packaged module, thus saving engineering and validation effort for OEM customers.

3 Whilst the diesel particulate filter will remove nearly all of the particulates from the exhaust stream, it is still desirable to have very low particulates out of the engine. To achieve this, Perkins is using electronically controlled high pressure common rail fuel systems. A particular strength of Perkins engines is their low noise characteristic. This facet of engine operation has been retained by designing noise reduction features into the engine, allowing the equipment manufacturer to minimise the cost and complexity of adding additional sound attenuation into machines. 1204E-E44TA and TTA Swept Volume, Litres Rated Speed Power Band Maximum Torque Aspiration TA kw 560 Nm 4.4 Litres rpm Turbo Aftercooled TTA kw 750 Nm Airsystems SMART Wastegate Single-Stage Turbo 2 Stage Turbo with SMART Wastegate NOx Technology Fuel System ECM NOx Reduction System High Pressure Common Rail A5E2 The 1204 model replaces the popular current 1104 engine. It is offered in a choice of two versions; the TA uses a single turbocharger with intercooler. The TTA version uses a two stage turbocharger, like the 7 litre engine, for extra power density and faster response. All of these engines will employ Perkins NOx reduction technology, rather than SCR technology so there will be no requirement for the customer to buy, store and fill up with urea. The 1204 will be available at a range of rated speeds and torque curves, to ensure that is suitable for interface with a wide variety of different transmission types.

4 Advances have also been made with the 800 Series engines. Power and torque is being increased, by up to 40%, allowing an engine choice for customers who might currently take the lower range of the 1104D engine. With its more compact package it will allow OEMs to make some room for the aftertreatment packaging and will provide better fuel economy in some operating conditions. Further announcements regarding Perkins 800 Series will be made in The 400 Series completes the range line-up. Although this range already meets Tier 4 Interim, the legislation for NOx and particulates is not as strict as for larger products and so aftertreatment is not currently required. In 2013, however, there will be a further stage of legislation for these products, which will require the use of particulate aftertreatment for mobile applications in the USA above 19KW and in Europe above 37kW. The products taken by the majority of Perkins 400 series customers fall outside of this so that the drivers for development of this range will not only be emissions legislation related. More information will be available about the part of the range that requires particulate aftertreatment in Not all Countries Require the Tier 4/ Stage 3b No Regulations Tier 2/Stage II Tier 3/Stage IIIA Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB Tier 4 Final/Stage IV The global emissions picture is one of increasing complexity. Many countries will require products to meet a range of different, less stringent emissions standards. It will no longer be

5 commercially viable, or technically possible to have one worldwide model of a machine. The cost of the more sophisticated engines and the risks associated with high sulphur diesel will demand special models for lesser regulated countries. Perkins is developing a range of engines to meet these needs, to be manufactured close to the regions of consumption in several continents. These will in some cases be simple and highly cost effective engines, but it is also probable that there will be sophisticated electronically controlled engines for those industries and regions where there are customers willing to pay a little more for higher productivity and superior fuel economy. Perkins as a solutions provider The Perkins name is strongly associated with diesel engines, but the challenge to a machine manufacturing OEM is not simply one of choosing an engine off-the-shelf and bolting it into his machine. Some machine manufacturer may not be able or willing to use their limited engineering resource on redesigning and revalidating power systems. This is not where they add the most value. So, Perkins is developing a range of pre-assembled drop in modules, including not only the engine, but also aftertreatment, cooling pack, fan, etc all packaged tightly on a frame. In addition, through working closely with machine designers on engine integration, Perkins has recognised that there are other issues faced by OEMs, and it will be offering a range of services to help overcome these challenges.
