2 Dear Colleagues, The continuous optimization of the classical ICE towards increased efficiency, reduced GHG and minimized pollutant emissions remains a key aspect of automotive engineering. Additive manufacturing and composite materials enable enhanced functionality for highly stressed engine components and, thereby, offer unprecedented flexibility for optimizing powertrain design. The electrification of the Diesel engine is another promising approach to combine the advantages of different engineering sectors and create synergies for the future. Despite the currently ongoing public discussions the modern Diesel engine represents - on a more rational base - still a favorable platform for a highly-valuable future propulsion system unit even under changing regulatory boundary conditions and an altering market environment. The 4th edition of FEV s international expert conference Diesel Powertrains 3.0 will highlight these and further aspects in various dedicated technical sessions. This year the conference is going to be hosted in the West Midlands, UK on July 3rd-4th, This engineering community meeting provides in-depth insights into new and upcoming technological innovations for the next generation of sustainable, Diesel-engined propulsion systems.
