Without oil our world would be a very different place. From convenient PET bottles to high-gloss paint for motor vehicles, rubbish bins in kitchens, fertilisers for the agricultural industry and aeroplane interiors, wherever you look crude oil furnishes the raw material. As one of Germany s most modern refineries, we therefore produce not just classical fuels but also a variety of raw materials for the chemical industry, thus helping to keep our world mobile and enhance our quality of life.

7 Imagebroschuere_64_E_ :09 Seite 7 We have been refining crude oil since the 1940s. During this time the foundation of our success has been continuous modernisation and adaption to the latest plant construction technology. As a middle distillates refinery, we chiefly produce diesel, heating oil and aviation turbine fuel. This targeted production is made possible by the centrepiece of our refinery, the hydrocracker. With the aid of this highly complex installation, we can convert heavy fuel oil into diesel and comparable products, as well as vary the proportions of the different products we produce in response to market conditions. As a result, our utilisation rate is higher than that of a classic refinery. The reference figure for the technological status of a refinery is the Nelson Index. The higher this figure is, the greater the complexity of a refinery s installations. Whereas the average Nelson Index for European refineries stands at 6.5, our refinery has a rating of 9.6, making us one of Germany s most modern and flexible oil processing facilities Oil is a natural product with a wide variety of different constituents. Our installations ensure an optimum utilisation rate.

9 Imagebroschuere_64_E_ :09 Seite 9 As the people working in the refinery laboratory, we are the guardians of product quality. With regular product analysis throughout the production process, we ensure that the crude oil, a natural product which varies greatly depending on its source, is converted into a quality product complying with DIN standards. This monitoring process begins on delivery of the crude oil, with incoming shipments being subject to arrivals analysis. Later on in the production process, the semi-finished products are blended in order to ensure that the desired products are manufactured to unvarying quality standards. In our business we work with potentially dangerous materials, and handling them safely has top priority. That is why all our employees receive regular training in every relevant safety procedure. They are backed up every minute of the day by our full-time professional works firefighting service, who are ready to step in should an incident occur despite all the precautions taken. Over 30,000 measuring points all along the production chain ensure that even the smallest fault in the production process is immediately transmitted to the central monitoring station. This safety culture has put us among the leading European refineries when it comes to safety, with hardly any company in the industry achieving better figures. 10

We welcome and reward your ideas and suggestions. Furthermore, we encourage our employees to get personally involved and participate actively in the refinery s progress. The average age of the refinery s personnel is 44, and about 50 per cent of our employees have been with us for at least 20 years. Work at the refinery is always a long-term commitment. Training young people is one of the central tasks we set ourselves in our personnel policies. Currently the refinery offers training as chemists, electronic engineers for automation technology, and industrial managers. The training we offer is excellent, and the places we have on offer are eagerly sought after. Time and again, Raffinerie Heide trainees and apprentices are among the best of the year in Schleswig-Holstein, and they frequently receive awards from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. To introduce young people to the world of the refinery, we cultivate active contacts with the region s schools. In addition to regular school visits to our installations, we offer work experience in our training workshop. The refinery takes part in many of the region s school fairs, using them to present the career opportunities we offer. 13 We also do a lot for university students. We are a member of the Supporters Association of the West Coast University of Applied Sciences, we are happy to respond to the queries of students working on degree theses, and of course we also offer work experience courses.

While the crude oil is refined at Hemmingstedt near Heide, the refinery s Brunsbüttel tank farm forms the central pivot for supplying our customers. The two parts of the company are connected by three pipelines comprising a total of nine pipeline sections which traverse the 32 kilometres separating the two facilities. We oversee the highly complex logistics from our control rooms. From our tank farm situated where Kiel Canal meets the Elbe river, we transport almost 50 per cent of our production by ship. Another 15 per cent is transported by rail directly from the refinery, while around a third is shipped by road. Meanwhile, Brunsbüttel also handles the crude oil necessary for all this. We obtain 75 per cent of our needs from various countries around the world. The remaining 25 per cent reaches us from an oil field right on our doorstep, via a pipeline connecting Brunsbüttel with the Mittelplate oil rig in the Wadden Sea.
