2015 Global Economics & The Downstream Industry

2 Executive Summary During the past 12 months, prices in the $3-trillion-plus global downstream market have fallen 40% reaching the lowest level since June 2009, when global markets were recovering from the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers. Prices slid 14% month-over-month in January and have fallen a further 3% into February and March; continuing a six-month slide triggered by falling crude oil and Naphtha prices. By assembling insights from key refining and petrochemical companies globally, we have created an in-depth report to enable you to benchmark, analyse trends, learn from challenges being encountered in different regions and identify a strategy that can be implemented into your own business. THIS REPORT WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND: The top challenges facing global downstream producers (See p.4) How the drop in crude oil prices is affecting companies investment strategies (see p.5) Which country will have the largest impact on supply and demand dynamics over the next two years (see p. 6) The World Refining Association is committed to creating high quality, strategic and technical conferences across the globe. We also recognise the need for pioneering industry content throughout the year and it is for this reason that we have commissioned this report to encourage knowledge sharing and promote learning. We hope you find this analysis useful and enlightening. Thought-provoking issues and findings from this report will feature in the debates and discussions taking place during Abu Dhabi International Downstream; cohosted by Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) and taking place in Abu Dhabi, May We prioritise industry involvement so please don t hesitate to get in touch with us directly if you have any questions or feedback you would like to share. Best regards, Maxwell Thompson Head of Content Middle East & Europe T: E: maxwell.thompson@clarionevents.me The 2015 Global Economics & The Downstream Industry Report has been independently conducted and prepared by the market research team at The World Refining Association. It is based on 150 experts opinions, all of whom are directly involved in the refining, petrochemicals and chemicals market. The report was conducted in January 2015 and published in April 2015 in London, United Kingdom. Equal geographical spread of responses was encouraged and the report does not represent the interests of one specific company or country. Research Participants Include:

3 Breakdown of Respondents by Company Category This report is largely based on the views of the representatives of NOCs, IOCs, Refiners and Petrochemical companies including Saudi Aramco, Eni, NOC Libya, Borouge, Orpic, Borealis, Takreer, SABIC and many others. 22% of respondents were petrochemical producers and 16% were refiners; service and technology providers were the second highest participants with 27%, followed by EPC companies at 16% of respondents. Amongst these EPCs, service and technology providers, job titles included; project managers, technical directors and global licensing managers from the likes of Petrofac, Wieland, ABB and Baker Hughes. 10% of the audience was made up of representatives from both consultancies and research institutes. The rest of the respondents (9%) were a combination of energy-related press and analysts. Respondents by Company Type Respondents by Region 27.5% 27.5% North America MENA 3% 2% Australasia Africa 15% Asia 25% Europe Petrochemical Producer - 22% Refinery Operator - 16% Engineering, Construction and Procurement Company - 16% Service Provider for the refining industry - 16% Service Provider for the petrochemical industry - 11% Management Consultant - 10% Press/Analyst - 9%

4 Key challenges for the Downstream Industry There are many challenges that refiners and petrochemical producers face globally, nonetheless these tend to differ depending on the region that they operate in. It is common knowledge that the European refining industry has been in decline for many years now due to stiff competition from regions with more advantageous feedstock situations such as the Middle East. The North American Shale Revolution has been a game changer for the region s energy industry and has seen the United States become the world s swing producer. Couple this with the vast amounts of Ethylene being produced from Shale Gas, and the North American petrochemical industry has, once again, been ignited with companies such as Dow Chemical investing large amounts of money in creating new petrochemical producing facilities in the U.S. Furthermore, China has seen a revolution of its own with the advent of Coal-to-Methanol and Methanol-to- Olefins technology. However, when asked what the biggest challenge they are facing globally is; 37% of participants said it was the drop and fluctuation in crude oil prices affecting global dynamics rather than any one particular region or industry player. What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing globally? The drop and fluctuation in crude oil prices impacting global dynamics 15% 24% 24% 27% 37% Global competitiveness for cheaper and available feedstock Supply/demand imbalance due to new capacity coming on stream The need to review future investment strategies Increasing flexibility and diversifying portfolios to meet global development 15% Adapting technology to produce new products 10% Refinery shut downs in Europe and volatility of feedstock from waste streams Global competitiveness for cheaper and available feedstock registered as the second biggest challenge the industry is facing at the moment, with 27% of participants confirming this. The industry has recently seen a shift in feedstock dynamics, with the Middle East no longer holding a significant feedstock advantage compared with the rest of the world, due primarily to the Shale revolution and CTM technology. We are witnessing a paradigm shift where Europe is looking towards lighter feedstocks from the U.S, whilst the Middle East is looking to take advantage of its liquid feedstocks and move towards heavier Naphtha feeds.

5 Oil Price Affecting Investment Decisions From 2010 until mid-2014, world oil prices had been fairly stable, at around $110 a barrel. But since June 2014 prices have more than halved. Brent Crude Oil dipped below $50 a barrel for the first time since May 2009 and U.S. crude has been down to below $48 a barrel. How is the drop in crude oil prices affecting downstream businesses? Global refining capacity is set to outpace demand growth in 2015 with largescale additions in the Middle East and Asia plus a number of smaller projects in the Americas. With no productivity gains, a 40% rig cut could lead to U.S. crude production growth flattening by end-2015; however likely productivity gains would require a 50-60% rig cut to flatten growth. In the big three plays (Bakken, Eagle Ford, Permian), new-well production per rig has continued to rise for oil & gas, as initial production (IP) and estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) increase, and days-to-drill [a well] per rig fall. Subsequently, dealing with the drop in crude oil prices is a challenge that both refiners and petrochemical producers will have to confront for the foreseeable future. It increases risk in our future investment decisions - 48% We are looking to diversify the value chain - 25% We are unsure what products create the most return on investment - 22% It s not impacting our business - 17% Nearly half of respondents (48%) said that declining oil prices has increased risk in their future investment decisions. With anticipated oil prices set to stay in the range of $50-$70 per barrel for the short to medium term, many companies are re-evaluating their investments as maximising ROI becomes even more critical to commerciality. Interestingly enough, 17% of participants said that the drop in crude oil prices was not affecting their businesses. This highlights the counterbalancing provided by thicker downstream margins offsetting some of the impact of lower crude oil prices. This further accentuates the inherent strength of the integrated business model in times of volatile commodity prices. Sources: EIA, DrillingInfo, Citi Research, Forbes

6 Global Supply & Demand Dynamics U.S. To Have Biggest Impact On Supply & Demand Dynamics Which country will have the largest impact on supply and demand dynamics in the next 2 years? With the shale revolution still in the early stages of surging productivity gains, it is no surprise that 61% of respondents to the Global Economics & The Downstream Industry Survey believe that the United States will have the biggest impact on supply and demand dynamics over the next 2 years. Saudi Arabia - the historical swing producer of the last 30 years will not have as bigger impact as it has had over the past 3 decades according to the survey, whilst still remaining hugely influential within Opec. In an like rule, the majority of U.S. production comes from a relative minority of wells, and average initial production rates rise as the weaker-performing wells are cut first from drilling programs, driving productivity gains. A 40% CAPEX cut would lead the U.S. oil & gas sector to cash flow neutral. USA - 61% Saudi Arabia - 34% China - 28% Nonetheless, according to British Petroleum s recently published Energy Outlook 2035 report, BP anticipates a slowdown in U.S. Shale Oil, allowing for the Middle East output to start regaining lost ground at the start of the next decade. The Energy Information Administration forecast that U.S. production will increase to 9.3 million barrels a day this year, the most since Crude stockpiles were million barrels as of Feb. 6, the most in EIA weekly data, beginning in The U.S. will be self-sufficient in oil by the 2030s, while North America will become a net energy exporter this year, according to BP. 7 7 What is the key to cutting costs? Taking advantage of the latest technologies is the key to cutting costs for global petrochemical producers Taking advantage of the latest innovative technologies 42.86% Innovation in technology has allowed refiners and petrochemical producers globally to remain economical in an ever increasing competitive market. Now, technology holds the key to cutting costs according to 42.86% of participants. Technologies that allow companies to raise profitability in plants such as operating your plant on heat produced in the cracker can have huge economic advantages in the long run % Maintaining existing assets 28.57% 28.57% By applying the latest technology Applying process knowhow to existing assets 14.29% Feedstock diversification 9.52% 9.52% Investing in energy efficient management software Integrating with refineries

8 What respondents want to know We asked respondents: If you met an expert who knew everything about the global downstream industry, what one question would you ask them? About future crude oil and aromatics price curves What is the future impact of the ethane derived from unconventional resources (shale and coal)? Next years price trends and availability? How to control the impact of uncertainties on production plans versus market demand? How will the oil price affect refinery margins over the next five years? How would new production in the U.S. Gulf and Arabian Gulf change trade flows of downstream petrochemical products? With continued low oil prices what is the true impact on the Petrochemical industry? What is the impact of the USA? What will be the best investment option in the next 5 years in the petrochemical industry? What is the proper way to get the first EPC contract?
