6 The Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft Concepts A major contribution to the maturing, integration and large scale demonstration of Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft - technologies is delivered through eight SFWA- Aircraft concepts by Defining or providing the operational environment to mature a technology to high TRLs Providing an evaluation platform Setting a scenario for a potential target application.? 1. High Speed nstrator Passive (HSDP) 2. Low Speed nstrator (LSD) 3. Short Range Aircraft Concept (SRA) 4. Low Sweep Bizjet Concept (LSBJ) 5. High Speed nstrator Active (HSDA) 6. Long Range Aircraft Concept (LRA) 7. High Sweep Bizjet Concept (HSBJ) 8. CROR Engine FTB 6
7 SFWA ITD Flight nstrator Options 1. High Speed Flight nstrator Objective: Large scale flight test of passive and active flow and loads control solutions on all new innovative wing concepts to validate low drag solutions at representative Mach and Reynolds Numbers. Envisaged to be used at least in two major phases of the project. Selected in April 2009 Option 1: UAV Option 2: Alpha-Jet Option 3: Airbus A340 with modified wing 2. Low Speed Flight nstrator Objective: Validation flight testing of High Lift solution to support / enable the innovative wing low drag concepts with a full scale demonstrator. Option 1: Dassault Falcon Option 2: Airbus A Innovative Engine nstrator Flying Testbed Objective: nstrate viability of full scale innovative engine concept in operational condition Options under investigation Selection scheduled for 2010 Status: Preferred solution 4. Long Term Technology Flight nstrator Objective: Validation of durability and robustness of Smart Wing technologies in operational environment Option 1: In Service Transport Aircraft Option 2: Airbus A300 Beluga Option 2: Airbus A320 Selection(s) part of technology roadmap 7
8 The SFWA- High Speed nstrator Passive (HSDP) Smart Passive Laminar Flow Wing Laminar Wing Ground test demonstrator to address structural, system and manufacturing aspects Design of an all new natural laminar wing Proof of natural laminar wing concept in wind tunnel tests Use of novel materials and structural concepts Exploitation of structural and system integration together with tight tolerance / high quality manufacturing methods in a large scale ground test demonstrator Large scale flight test demonstration of the laminar wing in operational conditions Starboard wing Laminar wing structure concept option 1 Port wing Laminar wing structure concept option 2 Laminar Wing aerdynamic layout and performance 8

Example of the RR - CROR (Dream, Dowty Design) Innovative Power-Plant Integration Design of innovative CROR blades and pylon CROR installation effects: aero, noise, vibrations, handling qualities CROR propeller kinematics, study of fragment impact depending on size and propeller and fuselage materials Structural technologies for armour and shielding Feasibility study of a full scale CROR engine in a Flying Testbed nstration (FTB) CROR design study with new blade and engine design CROR integration study for a full scale test of a CROR engine on-board a modified Airbus A Flying Test Bed. 10
