2 Outline About the Industry Refining & Petrochemical Sector Overview Global Prospective Middle East Growth Opportunities in Oman Project Report Oman Refining & Petrochemical Exhibition & Conference Why Oman? Organizers Credentials
3 About the Industry Definition: Petrochemicals : non-fuel compounds derived from oil and natural gas Fall under organic chemistry concerned with hydrocarbons and oil or natural gas derivatives Organic chemicals account for approximately 85 percent of all the substances produced in the chemical industry - basic plastics through to complex pharmaceuticals The oil and gas industry plays a fundamental role in providing the essential inputs Petrochemicals feedstock's are largely made up of bi-products of the refining processes petroleum gases Naphtha light gas oil Methane & Ethane
4 About the Industry Stages of Petrochemical & Refining Industry The conversion of refinery feedstocks into final products entails three main stages. First Stage: Manufacturing of the base chemicals or the building blocks Base Chemicals (The Building Block of the Petrochemical Industry) Olefins Aromatic Benzene Xylene (6 - carbon ring) Toluene Ethylene (2 carbon chain) Propylene (3 carbon chain) Butadiene (4 carbon chain) Second Stage: To refine base chemicals into intermediate products. Intermediate Products Ethanol Ethylene glycol Propylene glycol Styrene Third Stage: The intermediate products are either further processed or converted into products that are used directly by industry to produce finished consumer products. Finished Products Polyethylene Polypropylene Polystyrene Polyvinylchloride The oil and gas industry s involvement in petrochemicals is primarily at these three stages, that is, the manufacturing of base chemicals all the way through to their subsequent conversion into plastic resins (polyethylene and polypropylene).
5 About the Industry MILESTONES: Two key events mark the beginning of the rapid evolution of the GCC Petrochemical Industry 1) Commissioning in 1981 of QAPCO's ethylene/polyethylene plant in Qatar 2) The production of methanol in 1983 in Saudi Arabia by SABIC's affiliate AR-RAZI Subsequently industry has taken a rapid and consistent expansion pattern Staggering expansion was in Saudi Arabia, which resulted in rendering Sabic now not only the dominant GCC petrochemical producer but also a global player Beside Saudi Arabia and Qatar, production of petrochemicals in the GCC has extended respectively to Bahrain, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and more recently to Oman GCC petrochemical production accounts for 13% of annual world petrochemical output by volume.
