1 MBE 900 SERVICE MANUAL 10. Measure the shaft length of the main bearing-cap bolts. Replace any bolts that exceed the maximum shaft length. See Figure 1-34 and see Table 1-13a. 1. Table 1-13a Main Bearing Bolt Maximum Reuse Length 11. Put a light coat of oil on the main bearing-cap bolts. Install all the M14 main bearing-cap bolts. Tighten each one in four stages. The tightening stages are listed in Table Size Max. Shaft Length Tightening Stage Torque Value Stage 1 30 N m (22 lb ft) M14 x 2.0 (116.0 mm (4.57 in.) or mm (5.35 in.) Stage 2 Stage 3 80 N m (59 lb ft) 155 N m (114 lb ft) Stage 4 additional 90 degrees Table 1-14 Tightening Stages, Main Bearing-Cap Bolts 12. Install the thrust washers in the bearing cap, making sure the slots on the thrust washers are facing outboard. See Figure Install the thrust washer bearing cap. Tighten the bolts in stages to the same torque as the other bearing-cap bolts. 14. Measure the crankshaft end-play (lateral runout) at the thrust washer bearing journal. 2 1.6 CRANKSHAFT [a] Set up a dial gauge and a dial gauge holder. See Figure Crankshaft 3. Dial Gauge Holder 2. Dial Gauge Figure 1-35 Checking the Crankshaft End-Play (Lateral Runout) [b] [c] [d] Move the crankshaft all the way forward by prying on one of the bearing caps, then zero out the dial gauge. See Figure 1-35, A. Move the crankshaft all the way to the rear. Note the end-play on the dial gauge. See Figure 1-35, A. If the end-play is not 0.16 mm to 0.38 mm (0.006 in. to in.), replace the thrust washers with those of the necessary thickness. Oversize thrust washers are available. 3 MBE 900 SERVICE MANUAL 15. Attach the crankshaft gear to the crankshaft flange. Refer to section Align the key on the crankshaft with the keyway in the gear. Make sure the mark "1" on the crankshaft gear is between the markings "1 1" on the camshaft gear. See Figure Crankshaft Gear 2. Camshaft Gear Figure 1-36 Aligning the Marked Gear Teeth 16. Install the pistons. Refer to section Install the oil pump. Refer to section Install the oil pan. 5 MBE 900 SERVICE MANUAL Crankshaft Gear Installation Install the crankshaft gear as follows: 1. Line up the keyway in the crankshaft gear with the key on the end of the crankshaft. Make sure the "1" mark on the crankshaft gear is between the "1-1" mark on the camshaft gear. See Figure Camshaft Gear 2. 6 1.8 OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR 1.8 OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR The drive gear for the oil pump must be replaced, not repaired Oil Pump Drive Gear Removal Remove the old oil pump drive gear as follows: 1. Remove the engine from the vehicle. BODILY INJURY To avoid injury from a falling component, ensure a proper lifting device is used. Never stand beneath a suspended load. 2. Remove the crankshaft from the engine. Refer to section BURNS To avoid injury from burning, use lifting tools and heat-resistant gloves when handling heated components. 3. Heat the oil pump drive gear to 200 C (392 F). 4. Using a suitable puller, remove the oil pump drive gear from the front end of the crankshaft.
