1 CAE Services and Software BENTELER Engineering BENTELER Engineering offers development services in market segments such as Automotive, Public Transportation, Commercial Vehicles, Shipbuilding and Industry. BENTELER Engineering belongs to the BENTELER-group and employs a total workforce of more than 650 people at 12 sites in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.

2 Introduction Reduction of the development time is an important aspect in modern product design. The CAE professionals from BENTELER Engineering guarantee a smooth development process which minimizes both costs and risks. Our simulation support is not restricted to standard materials, linear or non-linear. We have both the tools and the experience to test and analyse many special materials used for lightweight-constructions (composites) as well as various different jointing techniques (hard soldering, welding, annealing). The CAE/Simulations professionals of BENTELER Engineering support you with solving questions regarding: Strength/Stiffness Fatigue/durability Optimization Multibody dynamics Lightweight Crash/impact CFD We offer these services in various markets such as Automotive, Shipbuilding and Industry. 2

3 Strength/stiffness Pressfit stresses: One of the basic checks to be performed on newly developed or redesigned products is the strength and stiffness of the product. The strength/stiffness value will provide the customer a status of the product. These values can be compared to the customers requirements; necessary changes can be implemented by the engineers of BENTELER Engineering to reach a feasible design. Requirements can be defined by the customer, but due to our broad experience we are able to support our customers in defining load cases and targets. for Strength/Stiffness: Abaqus, MSC. 4 Fatigue/Durability Failure of a product during its service life can cause great damage both economically and physically. Fatigue is the cause of failure in 90% of failure cases. An accurate prediction of the fatigue life of a product can save both money and more important, human lives S-N Curve Determining fatigue life through testing is time consuming and expensive due to the large number of specimens that need to be tested. Although testing will always be leading when determining fatigue life, at BENTELER Engineering we use fatigue calculation software like ncode and FEMFAT to reduce the overall costs by increasing the chance of a first time right design solution. Fatigue calculation of knuckle The presence of our in-house testing department gives us the opportunity to correlate the calculated and tested results. Due to this correlation we are able to further increase the precision of our FE-models. 5 Optimization The increased requirements of weight reduction requires optimization of parts. Parts must be strong and stiff but also as light and as cheap as possible. During the optimization calculation, our engineers are pushing the boundary of what is possible. With the use of Optistruct any goal or target can be achieved within the physical boundaries. BENTELER Engineering offers a full spectrum in redesigning of existing and new parts by optimization. 6 Multibody dynamics By using MSC Adams multi-body simulation tools, BENTELER Engineering offers support in vehicle dynamics development and in the design of steering and suspension systems. Support includes setting and cascading of full vehicle targets, analysis and optimization of vehicle handling properties, ride comfort, wheel suspension kinematics and compliance properties, steering system lay-out, etc. One-off measurement trailer: Other applications include simulations in the field of vehicle durability: calculation of component loads as input for FE strength and fatigue analysis. This can be executed fully analytical by simulation of the vehicle driving over rough road surfaces and/or road obstacles. Alternatively, a hybrid method may be used where measured wheel forces are used as input for the multi-body model. 7 Light weight The lightweight competence team of BENTELER Engineering focuses on the increasing importance of lightweight solutions. Within the BENTELER-group we have broad know-how of lightweight development and production. Our special expertise in fiber-reinforced composites and polymers and light metals (and combinations of these two), enables us to offer ready-to-use solutions that provide an optimal interplay between weight, strength, producibility, maintenance and costs. Fiber orientation Our CAE team is able to simulate and validate composite structures, both for stiffness and failure. The mechanical properties of a composite component are very dependent to the mode the component was produced. Therefore we are able to perform so called draping simulations in which the positions of the fibers - when curving in a mold - are determined. 8 Crash / impact Due to the recent improvements of numerical methods and computational power, explicit time integration solutions are becoming more common for simulating the realistic behavior of structural parts and assemblies that undergo large deformations in a short period of time. Bench test Using solvers like LS-Dyna, Abaqus Explicit, Radioss and Pam-Crash, BENTELER Engineering offers a full range of explicit FEA solutions, from individual part analysis to correlation with real tests and full vehicle crash analysis. 9 CFD Turbine flow Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is the best available method to analyze fluid flow and heat transfer in a quick and efficient way. With fluid flow and thermal simulation tools, our CAE specialists explore and compare product designs to better understand the implications of design choices before manufacturing. BENTELER Engineering offers the complete CFD process: from an appropriate description of the flow, modelling, establishing the conditions, strategy, input of parameters and files, simulation, monitoring, comparisons up to reporting and documentation.
