4 Introduction Determination of Dilute Solution Viscosity using glass capillary viscometers The PSL Rheotek range of manual and automated polymer viscometers (RPV 1, RPV and isp Sample Preparation modules) are suitable for determining the solution viscosity of a wide range of polymers. Solution viscosity can be described as the increase in viscosity of a solvent when a polymer is dissolved in that solvent. There are several ways to represent this, including: Relative Viscosity Specific Viscosity Reduced Viscosity (viscosity number) Inherent Viscosity (logarithmic viscosity number) Intrinsic Viscosity (limiting viscosity number) K Value Average degree of polymerization PSL Polymer Testing Laboratory All of the above properties are determined by measuring the viscosity of a known concentration of polymer dissolved in a solvent. The solution viscosity of a polymer changes with respect to molecular size and weight. Precision The precision of solution viscosity results will be dependent upon the variability of the actual polymer itself as well as the variability of the measurement process. Measurement variability can occur in a number of different areas, including preparation of the concentration, control of sample dissolution, temperature of measurement, flow time measurements and calculation of results. The RPV 1, RPV and isp 1 are designed to minimize measurement variability from each step of the solution viscosity analysis. However, it should be noted that there will always be a degree of variability within the polymer itself. Polymer Testing The PSL Rheotek Testing laboratory is equipped with isp 1, RPV 1 and RPV polymer viscometers in order to carry out a range of polymer testing. The laboratory can test samples in accordance with standard methods as well as carrying out a variability study. For more information, please see page 5. 1

Each analyzer is equipped with two automated measuring positions (suitable for ASTM or Din Ubbelohde or Cannon Fenske Routine viscometer tubes) situated in a liquid temperature controlled bath. Flow times are measured using a nir detection system suitable for a wide range of polymers. On completion of measurement, samples are removed and all wetted parts of the analyzer are cleaned with a two or optional three stage solvent and air drying programme. The RPV will determine and calculate a wide range of results including relative viscosity, Inherent or Intrinsic Viscosity, Specific Viscosity, Reduced Viscosity, Kinematic Viscosity, Dynamic Viscosity, Limiting Viscosity Number, Molecular Weight, Degree of Polymerization, K Value and others. An integrated sample preparation system is available as an option to provide an accurate means of preparing sample concentrations. Likewise an optional reaction station may also be used to heat and stir samples in order to control the dissolution of samples. 16 RPV /PnP Polymer Viscometer Analyzer with Smart Sampler and fully integrated sample preparation and dissolution The RPV /PnP Polymer Viscometers are suitable for PET, PVC, PA and other applications. The /PnP configuration provides the highest degree of automation and sample management. On completion of sample preparation, samples are placed in a holding rack. Each sample is then automatically controlled and is moved to be heated and stirred. The sample is then moved again to the cooling station where it continues to be stirred until it is moved to the sample loading dock. Throughout the process it is possible to control each individual sample in order to maximize efficiency. 17 RPV PulpIVA Pulp and Cellulose Viscometer Analyzer with Smart Sampler and fully integrated sample preparation, delivery of CED and dissolution The RPV PulpIVA is suitable for determining the Limiting Viscosity Number and degree of polymerization of pulp and cellulose. The PulpIVA configuration provides the highest degree of automation and sample handling. Pulp samples are initially weighed out and water is dispensed. The vial is then placed on the auto sampler rack and is "water stirred". Under a nitrogen blanket, CED is then added automatically to the wetted sample followed by a further period of stirring. On completion, samples are then automatically loaded into the viscometer. 20 Sample Preparation Systems (SP 1 & SP ) The PSL Rheotek SP 1 and SP are designed to eliminate sources of error during the sample preparation. Errors at this stage will generate incorrect solution viscosity results. The SP systems consist of one or two syringe pumps, precision balance with dispensing needle or needles and one or two solvent bottles with filter. The SP system can be integrated with the RPV 1 or RPV or used as a stand alone system. Sample concentrations are prepared on a weight to weight basis. The operator is prompted to add polymer until the software indicates that the correct weight of solvent is in the vial. The software then calculates and dispenses automatically the correct weight of solvent in order to provide an exact concentration based upon the actual weight of sample in the vial. The final stage of solvent addition is carried out one drop at a time to ensure a very accurate determined concentration. 28 Polymer Testing The PSL Polymer Testing laboratory can undertake the measurement of a single polymer sample through to carrying out an extensive study consisting of hundreds of samples. The laboratory will report results by Pdf. Polymer Testing Reports PET Sample (ASTM D4603) RPV Test # Concentration (g/dl) Relative Viscosity Intrinsic Viscosity (dl/g) Average Repeatability 0.63% Moisture content 0.8% Typically samples will be analyzed using the isp 1, reaction station and RPV. A typical PET study will also determine moisture content. Mother Liquor Precision Study Mother Liquor RPV Test # Concentration (g/dl) Relative Viscosity Intrinsic Viscosity (dl/g) Average Standard deviation CV % PET Polymer The purpose of the "mother liquor test" is to demonstrate the precision of RPV Polymer viscometer compared to the variability of the polymer. 0.11% In the above test 7 samples were prepared and then mixed together into the "mother liquor". From this "mother liquor", 7 samples were then poured into the viscometers and measured. The resulting coefficient of variation provides an indication of the precision of the apparatus used. This precision can then be removed from the above results, in order to obtain an indication of the variability of each polymer sample. 5

30 F100 Digital Thermometer In accordance with ISO and ASTM D445 The PSL Rheotek F100 precision digital thermometer is suitable for very accurate temperature measurement with high long term stability. The F100 is recommended to be used as a reference thermometer for all viscosity applications, including the RPV 1 and RPV. The F100 consists of two models: Handset with one PT100 resistance probe Handset with two PT100 resistance probes User functions include display hold, display zero, one time measurement log, statistical analysis min/max, average and standard deviation. A USB socket provides external communication to a PC for logging purposes. A Nickel Metal Hydride (NI MH) rechargeable battery is supplied with a charging socket built into the handset together with low battery indicator. Calibration to meet ASTM D445 accuracy requirements, a resistance calibration followed by a temperature calibration at key kinematic viscosity set points is carried out on the combined handset and probe system. F100 Thermometer The F100 probes are 335mm long enabling a viscometer bath to be checked at different depths. The long probes also meet the minimum immersion depths required by viscosity test methods.
