7 Now the Air Hose HVLP Guns Require High Volumes of Air To Deliver these high volumes, we need to be sure we are using the correct Hose. VOLUME is what we need. Hose I.D. (in.) Total psi Loss (psi.) Hose Pressure Drop (psi/ft.)

9 Now The Gun (Applicator) In Most all cases, you get what you pay for.. Disposable (Cheap) Applicators??? Different Technologies Available: In Order of Transfer Efficiency Lowest to Highest T.E. Conventional Air Spray Low Volume Medium Pressure AKA: Compliant, Trans Tech, Reduced Pressure, etc High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) Electrostatic (All Technologies)

12 OLD Days Versus New Days When is a HVLP gun a TRUE HVLP Gun? A gun LABELED as an HVLP gun MUST be Equipped with all original parts, and operated with the Maximum Inlet pressure stated by the Manufacturer, OR You must Provide a Test Air Cap to Prove Compliance. (For Each Gun Model and Set up)

13 HVLP Fact or Fiction? Statement HVLP is more Transfer Efficient? HVLP is Limited ONLY by a Maximum of 10 PSI at the Air Cap. This has nothing to do with Transfer Efficiency. It is a GENERAL Statement Based on Testing with A Specific FLUID, at a Specific Flow Rate on A Specific Part used in TESTING. HVLP is Not Necessary Bad IF Used Properly

14 Compliance By Rule From EPA 40 CFR 63 HHHHHH Spray applied coatings must be applied with a high volume, low pressure (HVLP) spray gun, electrostatic application, airless or air assisted airless spray gun or an equivalent technology OR

15 From AQMD.gov/rules VII. ADDITION OF SPRAY EQUIPMENT TO APPROVED LIST The addition of new equipment to approved spray equipment lists contained in District coating rules requires a greater body of evidence than that required from individual facility operators. In general, multiple tests utilizing a range of coatings applied to a variety of substrates will be required to provide adequate documentation of transfer efficiency. Also, back to back testing against already approved equipment may be required for comparative purposes. Test methods will be determined on a case by case basis through mutual agreement between the manufacturer and District staff. Agreed upon test methods will be based primarily on the general principles specified herein for equipment users.

16 The COMPLIANT Gun (European Standard) Testing uses a the same materials, and specific test conditions but does not relate to atomizing air pressure, but rather test results. Bottom Line MANY HVLP Guns are used Improperly because of the 10 PSI Limitation

17 Reduce Costs & Improve Safety When asked Why they Use HVLP Equipment: Paint Technicians Responded - 52% Said we have to, or that s what they give us (This includes the What's? ) 18% Said it is the newest and best way. 12% Said it reduces overspray, or gets rid of the cloud Only 4% equated HVLP with actual COST or Savings.
