2 MARINE EQUIPMENT PELLEGRINI belongs to PELLEGRINI group, whose core business is mechanical and machine tool production. MEP specializes in hydraulical and elecrical operated gears for marine and offshore industry. Established in 1964, MEP s original vocation was design and manufacturing of marine equipment as winches, capstans, cranes, davits and all kind of hoisting machineries. MEP soon became the most eminent supplier of marine winches and cranes for the Italian shipyards and the Italian Navy, but also of high performance machinery for the civil market. Since then, MEP has became increasingly involved in the manufacture of marine equipment for product carriers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, container-vessels and cruise ships. Naval forces needs are fulfilled by MEP special production: hoisting and articulated arms, power operated hatches and closures are some of the many items delivered to Italian Navy, Royal Navy,

3 As a standard, MEP production is qualified by IACS shipping registers, American Bureau, Lloyd s Register of Shipping, Registro italiano navale or Det Norske Veritas. Other shipping regsiter regulation can be complied with on request. The military production is usually follows NATO STANAG regulations, but additional rules can be observed as per customer s need. Commonly US MIL and NAV Standards, british BS and Italian Navy NAV acceptance tests for shock and vibration are adopted. MEP quality management is issued by IQNet under survey of Registri Italiano navale, ISO9001 requirements. MEP of course is qualified as AQAP NATO supplier. Oil and offshore production is fully accepted by major operators for terminal, platform and shipborne handling operations of chemical and oil products.

6 The greatest care as been paid in giving the maximum stiffness and strenght to hatches and screens with the minimum weight. The innovative composite material MEP adopted, together with a neat and smooth finish, has about three times lower weight than steel for given strenght. This is the success key for a low weight, easy operation, trouble free performance. All composite and plastic materials are fully qualified by fire tests for no flame-propagating, no smoke and toxic emission behaviour. Standard fire compliance is to AFNOR rule class M1-F1 and AIACS Lloyd s Register - RINA SOLAS standard.

7 RCS MEP gears have been extensively selected with lightness and robustness as goals during design stage: Furthermore, components have been routinely tested on shock testbeds, in compliance with strict regulations issued by the Navies, such as STANAG Smaller items like louvers and hatches in composite material are intrisecally safer for the personnel from fragment detachment also in case of heavy shock or direct impact. Larger and bulkier mechanisms, like shutter doors and sidescreens, are globally checked by FEM analysis and their individual components individually tested on shock testbed to validate analytical results. The hatches and screens typically weight less than 50 kg/m 2 ; they can sustain without any harm shockloads up to 65 g in vertical, horizontal or transverse axis. Hatches can typically cope with green sea loads up to 750 kpa/m 2 and windloads up to 100 knots. As an average, the weight of RCS closures is about 45% of the metallic equivalent. As a standard, all RCS equipments are finished in matt black to reduce optical impact, but they can be supplied with different RAL coatings

8 The composite material developed for RCS MEP equipments has been designed for optimal electromagnetic performance in the frequency spectrum from 4 to 18+ GHz, in all polarizations. Design of the components further reduces intrinsic radar visibility of the composite material, thus totally preventing any radar return echoes, as well as electromagnetic leakages inside the ship. Performance specification is classified, however typical attenuation is better than -30 db both in horizontal and vertical polarizations. Extensive testing in calibrated anechoic room and in open field is a standard step in acceptance test, both for serial and custom built elements.

9 Advanced materials are a standard in MEP production. Stainless steel, marine grade is exploited for rust free and neat appearance, but also composite and plastic material are widely adopted. All nuts and bolts are hi tensile, selflocking type, and whenever it is possible monolythic parts are adopted, to minimise shock stress and enhance survivabiliy. MEP since the very beginning deals only with marine equipment: harsh environment and operational constraints are well known and reliable technology has been implemented in all MEP supply for safer, troublefree operation.

By controlling scattered emission, just a fraction of it shall revert to the seeker: Whenever openings, recesses and radar hotspots are needed onboard, you shall find an appropriate RCS MEP solution, a tested design, a smarter solution. 11 Ship detection, and specifically ship detection by radar waves, is an actual concern of most Navies. Many efforts in design of new naval vessels are devoted to reduce radar signature and to minimize detectability. Low signature increases survivability and self-defence effectiveness. Radar wave signature of a ship is better achieved by absorbing and addressing return waves away from searching antenna, i.e. by proper management of reflection performance of the whole ship. Construction details have capital importance, as the twinkling scatter signal from discontinuities on ship s profile may jeopardize the best overall design. Sophisticated composites are a cornerstone. Back scattering and low detectability can be achieved either by radar absorbing materials and hi-quality finishing. Both ways are fully exploited by MEP-MARINE EQUIPMENTS PELLEGRINI in its RCS series. Together with superb mechanical and radioelectrical performances and appropriate design, RCS MEP are able to cope with the hardest challenge found onboard.

Speed, survivability, low initial cost and reduced maintanance are just a few of the clashing factors to cope with during ship construction. Emerging requirements like reduced IR and radar signature, shock robustness and increased fire protection ask for innovative materials and enhanced, smarter solutions. MARINE EQUIPMENTS PELLEGRINI, since decades, is a leader supplier of Navies, oil and shipping companies worldwide. More than 1,000 crane, lifting gears, hydraulically operated doors, hatches and special equipments have been delivered by MEP, mostly incorporating custom-tailored, purposely designed items to fit specific needs. The range includes a full variety of foldable, hydraulically operated shutter doors, deck and hullside waterproof hatches, air intake louvers for gas turbine propulsion plants down to HVAC exhaust and inlet screens, superstructure doors and accessories. MEP has already sold more than 200 RCS devices to three Navies, for their Third millenium renewal programs.
