This national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche contains eight pages and four annexes. The subject was first granted a national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche on 17 October 2011.
2 Page 2 of 8 10 October 2016 I GENERAL PROVISIONS 1 With the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche the fitness for use and the applicability of the subject of approval in accordance with the Building Codes of the federal states (Landesbauordnungen) have been verified. 2 If in the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche requirements are made concerning the special expertise and experience of persons entrusted with the manufacture of construction products and types of construction in accordance with the provisions of the relevant federal state following Section 17 Sub-Section 5 of the Model Building Code (Musterbauordnung), it shall be noted that this expertise and experience can also be proven by equivalent verifications from other Member States of the European Union. If necessary, this also applies to verifications presented within the framework of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) or other bilateral agreements. 3 The national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche does not replace the permits, approvals and certificates prescribed by law for carrying out building projects. 4 The national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche is granted without prejudice to the rights of third parties, in particular private property rights. 5 Notwithstanding further provisions in the 'Special Provisions', manufacturers and distributors of the subject of approval shall make copies of the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche available to the user and point out that the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche shall be available at the place of use. Upon request, copies of the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche shall be placed at the disposal of the authorities involved. 6 The national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche may be reproduced in full only. Partial publication requires the consent of Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik. Texts and drawings contained in advertising literature may not be in contradiction to the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche. In the event of a discrepancy between the German original of the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche and this authorised translation, the German version shall prevail. 7 The national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche is granted until revoked. The provisions of the national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche can subsequently be supplemented and amended, in particular if this is required by new technical findings.
3 Page 3 of 8 10 October 2016 II SPECIAL PROVISIONS 1 Subject of approval and field of application The subject of approval is threaded couplers for mechanical coupling in accordance with DIN EN and DIN EN /NA Section 8.7. The coupler elements may be used for B500B reinforcing bars with nominal diameters of 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 25, 28, 32 and 40 mm. The coupling consists of coupler part SMA with an internal thread and coupler part SMB with an external thread (see Annex 1). This coupling is hereinafter referred to as a 'MODIX coupler'. The standard coupler is used for connecting two bars of the same diameter (see Figure 1 in Annex 1). The reduction coupler (see Figure 3 in Annex 1) is used for connecting differently-sized bars which are adjacent to each other in the standard diameter series. This is done using the coupler parts of the thicker of the two bars to be connected, with the coupler part SMB being pressed on to the thinner of the two bars. The positional coupler (see Figure 4 in Annex 1) is used for connecting bars having ends that are a defined distance apart. The bars cannot be rotated. One of the bars shall not be restricted in its axial movement. Coupler part SMB has an annular gap behind the abutting face that faces coupler part SMA. During assembly at the place of use the two coupler parts shall be screwed until the annular gap closes. The thread strain that is thus created serves to decrease slippage. Alternatively to coupler part SMB, a B5005B reinforcing bar with a thread at the end of the bar with a nominal diameter of 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 25 or 28 mm (see Figure 2 in Annex 1) is used for coupler part SMBL. The sleeve is tightened on to the threaded bar end with a defined torque. 2 Provisions for the construction product 2.1 Properties and composition Material properties Coupler parts The materials used for the coupler parts and the geometrical dimensions of the couplers and coupler parts are given in Annexes 2 to 4. The workshop drawings including tolerance specifications and the treatment conditions of the materials used are deposited with Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik and the external surveillance bodies Reinforcing steel bars The requirements with regard to the properties set out in Table 2 of DIN shall be fulfilled for the B500B reinforcing steel bars with nominal diameters of 10 to 40 mm Geometry The outer dimensions of the couplers and the thread geometry are specified in Annexes 2 to 4.
4 Page 4 of 8 10 October Manufacture, packaging, transport, storage and marking Manufacture Coupler part SMA The starting material for coupler part SMA is seamless, circular steel pipe or round material from which the coupler is cut and fitted with a cut metric internal thread (female coupler) of defined length. Coupler part SMA is hydraulically pressed on to the ribbed surface of the reinforcing steel bar in the factory by the manufacturer of the MODIX coupler Coupler part SMB The starting material for coupler part SMB is round material from which the coupler is cut and fitted with a cut metric external thread (male coupler) of defined length. Like coupler part SMA, coupler part SMB is hydraulically pressed on to the ribbed surface of the B5005B reinforcing steel bar in the factory by the manufacturer of the MODIX coupler Coupler part SMBL Coupler part SMBL is manufactured from B500B reinforcing steel bar with a cut thread of defined length at the end of the bar Reduction coupler Coupler part SMA is hydraulically pressed on to the thicker of the bars to be connected. Coupler part SMB corresponding to the diameter of the thicker bar is hydraulically pressed on to the thinner of the two bars in accordance with selected press parameters Positional coupler The positional coupler consists of coupler parts SMA and SMB (see Sections and ) and a threaded bar, a positioning sleeve with internal thread and two locknuts with annular gap for control of thread strain Packaging, transport and storage The coupler parts and the remaining connection materials shall be packed, transported and stored in such a way that they are protected against corrosion, mechanical damage and contamination until they are installed at the construction site Marking and delivery note Coupler parts SMA and SMB or SMBL and connection materials shall be marked with the applicant's symbol 'P' at the points specified in Annexes 2 to 4. The marking also includes the coupler type, the plant in which the coupler starting material was manufactured and the batch assignment for the starting material. If the manufacturing plant is indicated in encrypted form, a list with the complete information and its relationship to the key shall be deposited with Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik and the external surveillance bodies. 5 Page 5 of 8 10 October 2016 The delivery note shall be marked by the manufacturer of the MODIX coupler with the national conformity mark (Ü-Zeichen) in accordance with the Conformity Marking Ordinances (Übereinstimmungszeichen-Verordnungen) of the federal states. If the coupler parts are manufactured by a supplier, the audit report for these products shall be presented to the manufacturer for the marking. This mark may only be applied if all requirements pertaining to attestation of conformity given in Section 2.3 are met. 2.3 Attestation of conformity General The attestation of conformity of the MODIX coupler to the provisions of this national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche shall be issued for every manufacturer and every supplier of the MODIX coupler in the form of a certificate of conformity based on factory production control and regular external surveillance, including initial type-testing of the MODIX coupler, in accordance with the following provisions. To issue the certificate of conformity and for external surveillance of the manufacturer as well as the suppliers, including the associated product testing to be carried out in the process, the manufacturer or supplier shall use an appropriately recognised certification body and an appropriately recognised inspection body. The declaration that a certificate of conformity has been granted shall be given by the manufacturer through marking of the construction products with the national conformity mark (Ü-Zeichen) including statement of the intended use. The certification body shall send a copy of the certificate of conformity issued by the same to Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik Factory production control A factory production control system shall be set up and implemented for each manufacturer and each supplier of the MODIX coupler. Factory production control is understood to be continuous surveillance of production of the threaded mechanical coupler by the manufacturer or supplier to ensure that the provisions of this national technical approval (allgemeine bauaufsichtliche are complied with. If a manufacturer uses semi-finished products not manufactured in the manufacturer's factory or by supplier companies, an appropriate incoming inspection shall be carried out. Factory production control shall include at least the measures specified in the May 2007 version of 'Principles of Approval and Monitoring Tests of Mechanical Couplers' (Grundsätze für Zulassungs- und Überwachungsprüfungen von mechanischen Betonstahlverbindungen). The outer dimensions of coupler parts SMA and SMB or SMBL shall be checked on random samples using suitable go / no go gauges (statistical analysis not necessary). For coupler parts SMA and SMB these checks shall be carried out before the parts are pressed on. For every 1000 manufactured couplers (each consisting of coupler part SMA and coupler part SMB or SMBL) one sample in the form of an individual coupler part or an assembled coupler shall be checked. The load capacity of the coupler part or coupler shall be tested in a tensile test. The test shall be considered to be passed if the assessment criteria of the May 2007 version of 'Principles of Approval and Monitoring Tests of Mechanical Couplers' (Grundsätze für Zulassungs- und Überwachungsprüfungen von mechanischen Betonstahlverbindungen) Section are met.
6 Page 6 of 8 10 October 2016 The results of factory production control shall be recorded and evaluated by each manufacturer and each supplier. The records shall at least include the following information: - designation of the construction product or the starting material and the components, - type of inspection or test, - date of manufacture and testing of the construction product or the starting material or the components, - results of the inspections and tests as well as (if applicable) comparison with requirements, - signature of the person responsible for factory production control. The records shall be kept for at least five years and submitted to the inspection body used for external surveillance. They shall be submitted to Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik and the competent supreme building authority upon request. If the test result is unsatisfactory, the manufacturer or supplier of the MODIX coupler shall immediately take the necessary measures to resolve the defect. Construction products which do not meet the requirements shall be handled in such a manner that they cannot be confused with compliant products. After the defect has been remedied, the relevant test shall be repeated immediately, where technically feasible and necessary to show that the defect has been eliminated External surveillance The factory production control system shall be inspected regularly, i.e. at least twice a year, by means of external surveillance in accordance with the principles given in Section for each manufacturer and each supplier. Samples for random testing in accordance with the principles given in Section shall be taken as part of external surveillance. The analysis of the tensile tests carried out in accordance with Section within the scope of factory production control shall be checked. The certification and external surveillance results shall be kept for at least five years. The certification body or inspection body shall present them to Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik and the competent supreme building authority upon request. 3 Provisions for design and dimensioning 3.1 General The regulations set forth in DIN EN in conjunction with DIN EN /NA and the following provisions shall apply to the design and dimensioning. All bars in a cross section may be butt-joined (full butt joint). The position and dimensions of the MODIX coupler shall be marked in the reinforcement drawings and the preconditions following from the installation specifications shall be able to be fulfilled. 3.2 Ultimate limit states Design for static and quasi-static actions When used for coupling of bars with diameters of 10 to 40 mm, the MODIX coupler can be loaded up to 100% like a non-butt-joined bar in the event of static or quasi-static tensile or compressive loading.
7 Page 7 of 8 10 October Fatigue The fatigue verification shall be carried out in accordance with DIN EN and DIN EN /NA, Section 6.8. As a characteristic value for the fatigue strength for the diameter range 10 to 28 mm a stress range of Rsk = 85 N/mm² for N = load cycles and for the diameter range 32 of 40 mm a stress range of Rsk = 75 N/mm² for N = load cycles shall be assumed (see Figure 6.30 in DIN EN ). The stress exponents for the S-N curve shall be taken as k 1 = 4 and k 2 = 5 for N* = Centre and edge distances The same values as for non-butt-joined bars in accordance with DIN EN and DIN EN /NA Sections and 8.2 apply to the concrete covering over the outer edge of a coupler and to the clearance between the outer edges of adjacent couplers. 3.4 Bending The distances necessary for installation remain unaffected by this. Planned bending of a bar shall only be allowed to begin at a distance of at least 5 from the coupling end ( = nominal diameter of the bent bar). If coupling bars are bent in the manufacturing plant with a special device, the distance to the coupling end may be reduced to 2. 4 Provisions for execution 4.1 Installation The MODIX coupler shall only be installed by trained staff in accordance with the manufacturer's written work instructions. These installation instructions are part of the delivery notes. Only coupler parts that are marked in accordance with Section 2.3 shall be used. The threads shall be clean and free from rust. The coaxial position of the bars to be connected shall be secured with brackets in the coupling region in such a way that no bending moment arises in the threads. Suitable measures (such as plastic caps) shall be taken to ensure that the threads are not contaminated (e.g. by laitance). Any foreign materials present in the coupler shall be removed before the coupler bar is screwed in. Coupler bar SMB shall be screwed completely into coupler bar SMA until it is hand-tight and then tightened using a suitable tool until the annular gap is closed. The locknuts of positional couplers shall also be tightened completely until the annular gap is closed. If coupler part SMBL is used, only torque tools that have been tested for functionality and precision in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6789 shall be permitted for use. The magnitude of the torque to be applied is based on Annex Monitoring the manufacture of the couplers on site The provisions of Section 4.1, particularly with regard to closing of the annular gap and adherence to torque specifications, shall be complied with. The torque spanners shall be inspected before and during use to ensure compliance with the requirements given in Section 4.1.
8 Page 8 of 8 10 October Notification of the building authority The authority supervising the construction or the persons whom it has assigned to supervise the construction shall be notified of the installation of the MODIX coupler.
