Preferred Entry Level Engine Diagnostics: Compression Ignition Systems Engine Diagnostics: Mechanical Compression Ignition Engine Fuel Systems 1 Introduction Learning Outcomes The student should: 1. test the serviceability of fuel system components previously removed from an engine; 2. assess the condition of fuel system components and recommend appropriate repairs; components; 3. overhaul and repair faulty fuel system 4. adjust and test repaired components for stated applications.

2 Content/ Context Safety regulations and safe working practices and procedures should be observed at all times. Corresponding to Learning Outcomes 1-4: 1. Use of test equipment and manufacturers' test plans to determine the serviceability of: rotary injection pumps; governors; injectors; lift pumps; turbochargers. 2. Methods of recording results of tests. Interpretation of test results and manufacturers' service information to identify faults and recommend appropriate repairs. 3. Use of special tools and equipment to dismantle, overhaul, reassemble and adjust on assembly the following components: rotary injection pumps; governors; injectors; lift pumps; turbochargers. Adjustment and testing of repaired components in preparation for fitting to stated applications. Need for a suitable working environment and an awareness of the health hazards associated with this work, eg. dermatitis. The observation of correct, clean working practices. -2 -

3 Suggested Learning and Teaching Approaches This module should be taught in a diesel room equipped with tools and equipment for testing and overhauling components. The importance of cleanliness and safe practice must be emphasised. All relevant service literature and manufacturers' test plans should be available. Each student should test, overhaul and adjust a range of components suitable to his requirements. Assessment Procedures Acceptable performance in the module will be satisfactory achievement of the performance criteria for each learning outcome.
