All vehicles first registered on, or after, 1 March 2001 are subject to a new form of VED (Road Fund Licence). This new duty is based upon the type of fuel the vehicle uses and its carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions level, measured in grams per kilometre (g/km). To help you identify the duty you will pay, the DVLA has created thirteen categories for petrol and diesel engines. Increased weight of a vehicle, including higher trim levels and the addition of options will have a detrimental influence on the level of fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions produced.
