6 COMFORT/CONVENIENCE 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat TM Second-row Bucket Seats Dual Power Sliding Side Doors Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System Tri-zone Climate Controls Power Adjustable Accelerator and Brake Pedals 2006 Comfort/Convenience Key Features delivers a superb driving experience from the ground up. But many of your customers will be most impressed when they re introduced to the vehicle s interior amenities. Unique storage areas, thoughtful conveniences and clever execution of practical ideas will make a stand-out in your customers minds. 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat TM folds flat into the floor when additional cargo space is needed, without having to remove and store it. Also reverses for tailgating (1) Second-row Bucket Seats can fold down and tumble forward, operate with one hand and one lever for easy access into the third-row seat. When tumbled forward, provides additional cargo space without having to remove the seats Dual Power Sliding Side Doors customers can activate the doors with a push-button switch on the B-pillars, a button on the remote key fob, buttons on the overhead console or by opening and closing the door using the interior or exterior door handle. Power safety signal mirrors activate when the sliding doors are opened Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System allows rear-seat passengers to watch movies on DVD and listen on wireless headphones; great for keeping kids entertained on long trips Interior Storage can be found throughout s interior Full Overhead Console provides extra storage space and a conversation mirror to help you monitor the second and third row while keeping your eyes on the road Reverse Sensing System uses four ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper that detect certain objects to the rear of the vehicle while backing up. Helps make parallel parking easier. Optional on all models (packaged with AdvanceTrac ) Tri-zone Climate Controls allow the driver, front passenger and rear-seat passengers to control their own temperature settings Power Adjustable Accelerator and Brake Pedals offer convenience if there are multiple drivers of varying heights. Optional on all models Easy-to-reach Controls located in the center stack and driver s side instrument panel allow customers to easily use the controls for various features with little need to reach or stretch. Be sure to point out to customers the location of the controls. Controls include: Rear window open/close controls Hazard switch Reverse Sensing System On/Off switch Power adjustable pedals AdvanceTrac Off switch Message center Cargo Management System collapsible storage dividers that can be configured to hold grocery bags or other small items in the cargo area storage well. Includes cargo net (1) The 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat should be put into position and used only when vehicle is stopped and in Park. While in tailgate mode, the seat is not intended for passenger seating when vehicle is in motion. 6

7 2006 Comfort/Convenience COMFORT/CONVENIENCE 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat TM Second-row Bucket Seats 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat TM Storing Feature features an ingenious 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat that stows in the floor when not in use This seat design eliminates the need to remove a heavy third-row seat when additional cargo room is needed No more having to remove the seat and store it in the garage. The seat is there when you need it and is out of sight when you don t Provides the convenience of not having to plan ahead when extra cargo space might be needed The seat is folded with a simple three-step process. With the head restraints pushed all the way down: 1. Pull strap 1, then fold the seatback down 2. Pull strap 2 to release the seat 3. Pull strap 3 to flip the seat back into the floor The head restraints are designed so that they do not need to be removed prior to folding the seat into the floor The shingled or recessed design allows the restraints to be pushed down flush with the seatback With the head restraints pushed down, the driver has a better view out of the rear window Tailgate Feature From the standard seating position the entire third-row seat can be reversed toward the cargo opening to provide a convenient seating area for tailgating or watching the kids play soccer from the sidelines (1) The seating area is protected from rain by the liftgate so everyone stays dry Storage Well When the 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat is not folded into the floor, there is a convenient storage well located just behind the seat The deep storage well is designed to hold smaller items. It helps keep them in place and prevents them from being scattered in the vehicle if the driver happens to hit the brakes hard or makes an evasive maneuver Traditional minivan designs have a flat floor area located behind the third-row seat. This design is not good for keeping items in place like groceries in plastic grocery bags or sports equipment like soccer balls and baseballs Second-row bucket seats are designed to tumble forward to allow easy access to the third-row seating area or to allow for additional cargo capacity without the need to completely remove the seats The seats are folded using a simple one-hand, one-lever design, making them easy to use Pulling up on the lever located on the bottom of the seat causes the seatback to fold forward and lay down on the seat bottom, while at the same time releasing the seat latches from the floor. Continuing to pull up on the lever causes the seat to tumble forward Minimal effort is needed to tumble the seat forward due to the gas assist strut located in the center of the seat. The strut has two benefits. First, it pushes on the seat bottom, making the seat easier to tumble forward. Second, because the strut is pushing on the seat bottom, it holds the seat in its tumbled position. The seat will not fall back into place under hard acceleration (1) The 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat should be put into position and used only when vehicle is stopped and in Park. While in tailgate mode, the seat is not intended for passenger seating while vehicle is in motion. Second-row Bucket Seats If additional cargo space is needed, the second-row seat can be completely removed With the third-row seat folded into the floor and the second-row seats removed, has cubic feet of cargo volume Second-row bucket seats have fore-and-aft adjustments that allow the seats to move forward and backward to give second- and third-row passengers additional leg room when needed Presentation Tip Second-row bucket seats that can fold down and tumble forward Many customers are likely to have kids and since they will most likely be traveling in the third-row seats, show one of the customer s kids how to operate the second-row seat. Then encourage the kids to use the seat. The simple, intuitive design of the seat makes it easy for even a child to use. And with the assist strut helping to reduce the force necessary to tumble the seat, using the seat is so easy a child can do it. 7

8 COMFORT/CONVENIENCE Child-seat Presenter Second-row Bench Seat Tri-zone Climate Control 2006 Comfort/Convenience Child-seat Presenter/Second-row Bench Seat models equipped with a second-row bench seat feature a child-seat presenter that helps give front-seat passengers easy access to a child in the second-row seat Tri-zone climate controls are made up of dual-zone temperature controls for the driver and front passenger and separate controls for rear-seat passengers The dual-zone controls allow the driver and front passenger to set their own desired temperature using manual controls. The controls allow up to approximately a 20-degree difference in temperature settings between both occupants Limited models feature an automatic dual-zone climate control that provides digital temperature readouts The front-seat occupants can set their own individual temperature settings and the climate-control system will automatically maintain those settings by adjusting the airflow mixture or changing the fan s speed No passenger interaction is required once the initial temperature is set Rear-seat passengers have their own set of temperature and fan speed controls. The climate-control system allows rearseat passengers to control their own temperature settings using manual controls found in the headliner. The rotary control for the temperature setting controls the desired temperature along with the airflow output. If cold air is desired, the airflow will be directed out of the headliner. If hotter temperatures are required, the airflow will be directed out of vents located near the floor. Set the temperature control in the middle and the airflow will be blended between the headliner and floor area If the rear-seat occupants are too small to use the controls, the front-seat passengers can control the rear temperature and fan speed using the climate controls located in the instrument panel The entire bench seat can move forward approximately 7 inches closer to the front seats, making it easier to reach a child who is secured in a child safety seat Tri-zone Climate Control Moving the second-row seat closer to the front seats allows more rear-seat leg room for third-row passengers Engineering Insight Airflow through is enhanced through the use of two air extractors, one each located in the lower rear sides of the passenger compartment. Acting as a type of one-way valve, the air extractors help pull air from the front of the vehicle to the back, allowing air to only leave the interior through them. Finding the right amount of airflow through a vehicle is important. Like a contractor calculating the best way to insulate a home, too much air passing through walls and windows decreases comfort and increases noise. Too little air movement can create an area with stagnant, uncomfortable and potentially unhealthy air. The benefits of improved airflow include: Greater passenger comfort because the climate-control system can function efficiently and predictably Enhanced visibility by pulling air across the inside windows, decreasing possible condensation on the interior windows 8

9 2006 Comfort/Convenience COMFORT/CONVENIENCE Cargo Capacity Storage Entertainment Cargo Van Cargo Capacity customers will enjoy plenty of cargo-carrying convenience with this vehicle s large cargo capacity With the second-row seat(s) removed and the third-row seat folded into the floor, offers cubic feet of space. The vehicle s flat loadfloor and underbody spare tire carrier help maximize cargo space Storage provides plenty of cargo volume behind the first-, second- and third-row seats Cargo Volume behind first row (135.7 cu. ft.) Cargo Volume behind second row (73.1 cu. ft.) Cargo Volume behind third row (31.1 cu. ft.) (1) The interior design incorporates many storage areas that provide convenient storage in places throughout the entire vehicle. The storage in does not cater to just the front-seat passengers. offers interior storage from the instrument panel to the liftgate. Storage areas include: Center below the audio system Large glove compartment Seatback storage on the back of the driver s and front passenger s seats Storage areas in both sliding side doors Third-row storage compartments on both sides Cargo well behind third-row seat Cargo management system Up to 9 cup holders (depending on model) Grocery bag hooks on third-row seat Cargo Management System The cargo management system segments the storage well into eight compartments with the use of dividers The compartments are split into four different sizes to provide just the right amount of space to contain cargo The cargo management system also comes with a folding, carpeted lid capable of withstanding 220 pounds of weight with all divider sections installed The lid helps secure certain items by keeping them out of sight When the storage well is needed to stow the 3rd Row Tailgate Bench Seat, TM the cargo management system conveniently collapses and can be stored behind the second row The cargo management system also includes a cargo net for securing loose items Entertainment offers an optional Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System. It includes a DVD player and a 7-inch drop-down screen contained in the overhead console. Other features include: Backlit controls for the screen Wireless infrared remote control Audio/video input jacks to allow use of other equipment. NOTE: Any other equipment also requires the customer to use a power adapter. The DVD player provides the audio/video jacks, but not the power source Two wireless headphones Cargo Van With the demise of the Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari Cargo Vans for 2006, Cargo is poised to gain market share in the Cargo Van segment. New for 2006 is an optional metal cargo partition available from the factory that helps protect front seats from damage due to cargo sliding forward toward the front of the vehicle Cargo has the lowest price in the segment (1) Includes 3.9-cu.-ft. storage well behind third-row seat. 9

11 2006 Safety/Security SAFETY/SECURITY Four-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS Personal Safety System Heated Power Safety Signal Mirrors Sliding Side Doors with Child Safety Locks Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) Safety Canopy TM System Key Features Safety is a primary concern for minivan buyers. While any minivan can go to the grocery store or haul a few bags of mulch, when it comes to transporting family members, most customers will stop and think twice about available protection. The engineering team didn t take safety lightly, and neither will your customers. has more available safety and security features than any other minivan. (1) However, keep in mind that s advantages don t stop at safety features. also offers excellent steering, ride and performance characteristics. And, it features innovative interior design, including storage features and flexible seating. Four-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS help prevent wheel lockup; help maintain steering control in a hard-braking situation Personal Safety System adjusts deployment of front airbags to enhance protection for the occupants, depending on a number of collision factors Heated Power Safety Signal Mirrors offer a flashing light warning for sliding side doors to alert anyone in the immediate area that passengers are entering or exiting the vehicle Sliding Side Doors with Child Safety Locks allow easy access to passenger compartment, while preventing kids from opening doors from inside Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) When the ABS sensors detect impending slippage on the rear tires, the EBD system sends the optimum amount of braking pressure to the rear brakes at all times and under a variety of loads Enables all four tires to give the maximum amount of braking they are capable of generating Benefits include: Improved braking under heavy loads Fewer occurrences of ABS activation Allows all four wheels to provide optimum braking Safety Canopy TM System combines the benefits of side curtain airbags and rollover sensors for protection. During certain side-impact collisions, the airbags deploy across all three rows of seats. During certain rollover events, both airbags will deploy and stay inflated for a longer period of time Includes front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags Optional on all models All-Speed Traction Control uses a combination of braking and/or engine management to help the vehicle maintain traction on slippery roads Included with AdvanceTrac Other Features Safety Cell Construction Transfers collision forces around passenger compartment to help absorb impact High-strength Side-door Intrusion Beams Add structural stability Absorb energy Help protect from intrusions into the passenger compartment IIHS Best Pick Rating The 2005 received a Best Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in frontal offset crash testing It is anticipated that will again receive this rating for 2006 (1) Based on 2005 competitive information. Front and Rear Crumple Zones Engineered to deform, or crumple, in a collision Allow vehicle structure to absorb some of the impact force Foam Bolsters Energy-absorbing foam is also located in the door panels Foam bolsters are stowed between the door outer panel and interior trim panel During a side impact, the bumper of the oncoming vehicle pushes the foam bolsters toward the occupant The foam bolsters push the driver or front passenger away from the oncoming vehicle and help cushion the occupant NHTSA Rating Five-star government frontal crash test rating by NHTSA for the driver and right front passenger the highest possible rating It is anticipated that will again receive this rating for 2006 Presentation Tip Crumple Zones Show your customers how crumple zones work by falling against the side of the vehicle and catching yourself with your arms. When you hold your arms stiff, your whole body absorbs the impact. When you bend your arms as you catch yourself, your body is cushioned from the impact. 11

12 SAFETY/SECURITY Airbags Personal Safety System 2006 Safety/Security A Closer Look: Airbags If your customers have concerns about airbag safety, explain that uses a Dual-stage Driver and Right Front Passenger Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that provides the capability of deploying in the full-powered mode or with less pressure in the Stage 1 mode. In less severe accidents, airbags deploy with less force or not at all helping to reduce the risk of injury due to the inflation of the airbag. Even the go/no go decision is based on different thresholds, depending on factors like safety belt usage and crash severity. In an overall sense, the system helps to make sure the appropriate level of airbag pressure is used for optimum protection. Dual-stage Driver and Right Front Passenger Airbags provide the capability of deploying in the fullpowered mode, or with less pressure in the Stage 1 mode. In less severe frontal crashes, airbags inflate with less force or not at all helping to reduce the risk of injury due to the inflation of the airbag. The system helps to make sure the appropriate level of airbag pressure is used Electronic Front Crash Severity Sensor provides the Restraint Control Module (RCM) with an early indication of the severity of the impact. This allows the RCM to calculate crash severity early on in the collision so that it can determine the appropriate pressure to inflate the airbags, and also whether to activate the safety belt pretensioners Front Outboard Safety Belt Energy Management Retractors gradually, allow the safety belt to loosen if necessary reducing the force of the belts on the occupants chests and allowing them to move forward very slightly and into the airbags Driver s-seat Position Sensor tells the Restraint Control Module (RCM) where the driver s seat is in relation to the steering wheel. The closeness of the seat to the steering wheel will help determine the airbag pressure that will be deployed. If the sensor determines that the seat is close to the steering wheel, Stage 1 (lower pressure) will be activated. Stage 2 is deactivated at this time Personal Safety System Front Outboard Safety Belt Usage Sensors monitor whether the driver and right front passenger are buckled up. At higher speeds, airbags need to deploy with greater pressure if front-seat passengers haven t buckled their safety belts. At lower speeds with safety belts buckled, airbags can deploy with less pressure, helping to reduce the risk of airbag-related injuries Front Outboard Safety Belt Pretensioners cause the front safety belts to tighten, holding them firmly against the occupants, before the airbags inflate. This helps reduce the force of the belts on the occupants and helps to effectively restrain the occupants Personal Safety System Restraint Control Module (RCM) is a sophisticated computer located under the instrument panel at the front edge of the passenger compartment. The RCM receives signals from the front satellite crash severity sensor, and judges how fast the vehicle is decelerating. It also processes signals from the other Personal Safety System sensors and determines how the dual-stage front airbags and safety belt pretensioners will deploy Front Passenger Sensing System (FPSS) The front passenger sensing system uses the front passenger occupant classification sensor and safety belt tension sensor to detect the presence of a properly seated person and determine if the front passenger frontal airbag should or should not be enabled. The front passenger sensing system is designed to recognize three conditions: 1. When the front seat is empty 2. When a small person is seated 3. When an adult is seated in the 3. front passenger seat When the system senses that the front seat is empty, it disables the front passenger airbag. The system can also detect small/medium objects placed on the seat and, therefore, is designed to disable the passenger airbag when it detects an object such as a small purse or briefcase To determine if a small person is seated in the front passenger seat, the system uses information from both the seat weight sensor and safety belt tension sensor to determine if the passenger airbag should be disabled. The system does not lessen the important safety message to keep children properly restrained in the back seat. The system is designed in accordance with the performance requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208. This requires that the front passenger frontal airbag be disabled for a 6-year-old child because a child who is 6 years of age generally weighs between 46.5 and 56.5 pounds, and is between 45 and 49 inches in height. The system also is designed to recognize properly installed child restraint seats placed in the front passenger seat. When the airbag is disabled because the small person has been detected by the system, the passenger airbag off lamp on the display panel is illuminated When the system detects a properly seated adult, the front passenger airbag is active and the passenger airbag off lamp will not illuminate 12

13 2006 Safety/Security SAFETY/SECURITY Safety Canopy TM System Four-wheel Disc Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System Safety Canopy TM System The optional Safety Canopy System consists of side curtain airbags and rollover sensors These air curtains are triggered independently from the driver and passenger front airbags. The side curtain airbag, made up of a single assembly with two air chambers, inflates to a thickness of about 4 inches. Side curtain airbags are located in the roof side rail behind the headliner. They deploy downward and outward, toward the side window opening The rollover sensor technology measures angular velocity and lateral acceleration to predict the vehicle s propensity to roll. If the rollover-sensing threshold is reached, the sensor signals deployment of the occupant protection devices Side curtain airbags will not interfere with a properly installed child safety seat or booster seat: Because of the angle of deployment and the fact that deployed airbags do not cover the entire side window glass, they will not interfere with a properly installed child safety seat or booster seat Included with the Safety Canopy System are front-seatmounted side-impact airbags. These airbags provide additional protection for the driver and right front passenger. They help protect the lower portion of the body in certain side collisions. Also, they inflate from the outboard side of the front seatbacks and not the doors, so no matter how the seat is positioned, the airbags inflate in the optimum position for the driver and the right front passenger. Combined with the Safety Canopy, the front-seat side-impact airbags provide protection for both the head and chest of front-seat occupants in certain side-impact collisions. Engineering Insight A unique feature of the Safety Canopy System is the amount of time the airbags are inflated. Unlike front airbags that deflate immediately after deployment, the side curtain airbags in stay inflated for a longer period of time. Keeping the airbags inflated for a longer period of time helps protect the occupants from multiple rollovers and secondary impacts that could happen a few seconds after the initial impact occurs. Four-wheel Disc Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System features a standard four-wheel disc Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Disc brakes are more resistant to fade than drum brakes features large 11.5-inch rotors in the front and 12.2-inch rotors in the rear. These large brakes help slow with little pedal effort and are also designed to help reduce stopping distances This system offers a tight and responsive pedal feel. It can brake all four wheels independently for accurate control When the computer-controlled sensors indicate wheel lockup during hard braking, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) electronically pumps the brakes several times per second This system helps drivers to maintain steering control in emergency or other hard-braking situations, such as when avoiding a stalled car or a car backing into the roadway especially when road conditions are slippery Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) When the ABS sensors detect impending slippage on the rear tires, the EBD system sends the optimum amount of braking pressure to the rear brakes at all times and under a variety of loads EBD enables all four tires to give the maximum amount of braking they are capable of generating under a variety of loads Benefits include: Improved braking under heavy loads Fewer occurrences of ABS activation Allows all four wheels to provide optimum braking Presentation Tip Safety Canopy Many of your customers will want to know where the side curtain airbags are located on the vehicle. The side curtain airbags are well hidden within s interior. There is one on each side of the vehicle and they fit above the window line. The rolled curtain mounts on the sheet metal roof rail concealed behind the headliner. The stowed bag is located between the A-pillar and D-pillar. 13

Once tire pressure has been restored to its recommended level, TPMS-equipped vehicles simply need to be driven over 20 mph for at least 2 minutes to be reset Solid Warning Light Flashing Warning Light Check tire pressure to ensure proper inflation. Ford recommends a digital or dial-type tire pressure gauge for increased accuracy. After inflating tires to manufacturer s recommended pressure as shown on the tire label, the vehicle must be driven for at least 2 minutes at 20 mph to turn the light off and reset the system If the light remains on even after these steps have been taken, have the system inspected by the dealership Service Department NOTE: If the outside overnight temperature is significantly lower than the daytime temperature, tire pressure may decrease 1 psi for every 10 degrees F in temperature change. This may cause the TPMS warning to illuminate. If all tires appear to be inflated, customers should manually check the pressure and inflate all the tires to the recommended cold pressure. Driving on the spare tire may activate the TPMS warning light. Repair the damaged road wheel and remount it on the vehicle. Reset the TPMS by driving 20 mph for at least 2 minutes. If the tires are inflated to the manufacturer s recommended pressure and the spare tire is not in use, have the system inspected by the Service Department (1) Audible tone available only in vehicles equipped with message center. 14

A solid rubber hockey puck represents a traditional solid rubber engine mount. Have your customer imagine hitting the hockey puck with something solid like a coffee mug. The hockey puck would not absorb much of the force. The same thing happens with engine vibration. Now have your customer imagine striking a rubber hot water bottle with the coffee mug. The rubber hot water bottle absorbs the force much more effectively. In a similar manner, the liquid-filled mount absorbs engine vibrations to help prevent those forces from entering the passenger compartment. 18
