1 208 SAFETY, DRIVER-ASSIST & OTHER TECHNOLOGIES
2 A LEADERSHIP ROLE At Ford, we re committed to achieving top-level performance in realworld safety initiatives and driver-assist measures. Advancing vehicle safety includes the development of features that further protect occupants and other vulnerable road users in a variety of situations. We offer a range of innovative driver-assist technologies that utilize radar, sonar and cameras to sense and interpret the environment. These systems can also aid with routine driving tasks to reduce demands on the driver. Many Ford innovations require demanding internal criteria long before regulatory standards are adopted. SEE NUMEROUS SAFETY FEATURES, PLUS MANY DRIVER-ASSIST TECHNOLOGIES, IN ACTION: Visit YouTube.com and then, for Ford vehicles, type Ford How-to Video along with the name of the specific feature or technology in the search box at the top of the page. Follow the same procedure for Lincoln vehicles by typing Lincoln How-to Video plus the name of the specific feature or technology as the search query. These videos can also be found on owner.ford.com and owner.lincoln.com if preferred. MANAGING VEHICLE SAFETY ENCOURAGING SAFER DRIVING AVOIDING ACCIDENTS ASSISTING DRIVERS PROTECTING OCCUPANTS RESPONDING TO CRASHES At Ford, we design and manufacture vehicles that achieve high levels of vehicle safety for a wide range of people over a broad spectrum of real-world conditions. Vehicle safety is overseen by our Vice President of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. Driver behavior is a key contributing factor in many vehicle crashes. We at Ford have developed and support an array of programs and technologies that help encourage safer behavior on the roadways, for both experienced and novice drivers. A variety of Ford technologies, in addition to each vehicle s handling and braking capabilities, can assist drivers by helping control the vehicle or alerting the driver to potential collisions. Also, these technologies can support routine driving tasks by improving comfort and reducing demands on the driver. Driver-assistance technologies will continue to advance to provide drivers more support in certain situations, such as when changing lanes, in traffic jams and on freeway trips. The driver will always remain in the loop to take control, if required. Many factors influence a vehicle s crash performance, including the design of the vehicle and the use of safety equipment. Our commitment to advancing vehicle safety includes research and development of technologies that further enhance occupant protection in a wide variety of crash circumstances. One method of assisting emergency responders to reach the scene of a vehicle crash quickly is through in-vehicle emergency call systems, also called postcrash notification. These systems can help occupants summon assistance in an urgent situation. 4 SAFETY FEATURES 4-WAY ADJUSTABLE HEAD RESTRAINTS ADAPTIVE STEERING ADVANCETRAC ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ADVANCETRAC WITH RSC (ROLL STABILITY CONTROL ) AUTO HIGH BEAMS BRAKE ASSIST CONFIGURABLE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS CORNERING FOG LAMPS Head restraints are designed to help minimize the risk of neck injury in the event of a collision. Not everyone is the same size, so these restraints are adjustable moving up and down, and back and forth to suit each individual. The system adjusts the steering ratio of the vehicle to adapt to changing conditions. At slower speeds, the system makes the vehicle agile and easy to turn as it dials more steering into the road wheel; each low-speed maneuver requires less turning of the steering wheel At highway speeds, the system further optimizes steering response, enabling the vehicle to react smoothly and precisely to driver input When the system senses wheelslip or loss of traction, it applies braking where needed to help keep the vehicle on its intended path. Several sensors combine information, including the steering-wheel angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate, to determine if the vehicle begins to lose directional control. When the system senses a loss of traction or wheelslip, it applies braking where necessary to help keep the vehicle on its intended path. In addition to electronic stability control helping avoid skids or lateral slides, the Roll Stability Control helps avoid a rollover thanks to a pair of gyroscopic sensors that monitor vehicle dynamic data. During nighttime driving, if it s dark enough and no other traffic is present, the system automatically turns the high beams on. When an approaching vehicle s headlamps or a preceding vehicle s taillamps are detected, the high beams turn off (low beams remain on). Engineered to detect how quickly a driver presses the brake pedal, the system can help provide additional stopping power in critical situations. Daytime running lamps complement the design and look of the headlamps and provide a subtle, visual cue for other drivers in daylight situations. Using the vehicle s information display, drivers can choose to turn them on or off. Automatically illuminate the inside of a corner when parking, turning or driving along winding roads. CURVE CONTROL FORWARD COLLISION WARNING WITH BRAKE SUPPORT HEATED MIRRORS INFLATABLE REAR SAFETY BELTS MYKEY PERSONAL SAFETY SYSTEM 2 REAR VIEW CAMERA SOS POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM 3 When the system senses a particular curve is being taken too fast, it slows the vehicle down. Employing engine throttle reduction and 4-wheel braking intervention, it s always active in helping the driver maintain control around curves. Sensors can detect slower vehicles traveling in the same direction. If a potential collision is detected, a row of red lights flash in the windshield accompanied by a warning sound. If a collision is imminent, the vehicle precharges the brake system for full responsiveness when the driver brakes. Helping keep the sideview mirrors clear of snow and ice, heating begins when the rear-window defroster is activated. This feature combines attributes of traditional safety belts and airbags to provide an added level of crash safety protection for 2nd-row outboard passengers. In the event of certain frontal or side collisions, they distribute crashforce energy across more of the occupant s torso than a traditional safety belt. Program a multitude of vehicle functions even when not behind the wheel. Where necessary, MyKey can help promote good driving habits: Encourage front safety belt use through Belt-Minder, limit top speed, provide speed-limit alert chimes, display an earlier low-fuel warning, keep audio volume down, and/or prevent safety features and driver-assist technologies from being disabled. During certain types of frontal collisions, strategically placed sensors measure occupant conditions such as the driver s seat track position, whether or not the safety belts are buckled, and how fast the vehicle is decelerating. Then in milliseconds, the system determines how the dual-stage front airbags will deploy and front safety-belt pretensioners will activate. This sophisticated network employs a Front-Passenger Sensing System to specifically determine whether (and in what stage) the front-passenger airbag should deploy. While in Reverse, the camera displays an image of what s directly behind the vehicle. Color-coded guidelines representing the vehicle s path and proximity to objects appear in the display. The horn sounds and hazard lights flash to alert others if the vehicle is involved in an accident where any airbag deploys and/or the front safety belt pretensioners activate; especially useful if the driver is unconscious and can t signal for help. 4 Cornering fog lamps are not replacements for attentive driving, so remember to make driving the primary activity while behind the wheel. 2 To view the Personal Safety System video that applies to your vehicle, go to owner.ford.com or owner.lincoln.com, click SYNC & VEHICLE FEATURES, and then click How-To Videos to search by year/make/model. 3 SOS hardware may become damaged or the battery may lose power in a crash, which could prevent operation. Not all crashes will activate an airbag or safety belt pretensioner. 208 SAFETY, DRIVER-ASSIST & OTHER TECHNOLOGIES fleet.ford.com fleet 5
5 SAFETY FEATURES DRIVER-ASSIST TECHNOLOGIES TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) INDIVIDUAL TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) TRAILER SWAY CONTROL WIPER-ACTIVATED HEADLAMPS 80-DEGREE CAMERA DEGREE CAMERA 2 ACTIVE PARK ASSIST 2 ENHANCED ACTIVE PARK ASSIST 2 Pressure is constantly measured in all the road tires. When any tire is significantly underinflated, a telltale on the instrument panel alerts the driver. That s the signal to check the pressure of each tire, matching the figure to the psi (pounds per square inch) recommended for the vehicle. This version of TPMS shows the driver specifically which tire(s) is underinflated, plus the actual pressure in all 4 tires: The psi (pounds per square inch) numbers are shown in the vehicle s information display. The motions of the vehicle are monitored when towing. If trailer sway is detected, the system selectively applies the brakes as needed to help the driver maintain control of the truck and the trailer. With the exterior lighting control set in the Autolamp position, the headlamps and taillamps will automatically turn on when the windshield wipers activate. Provides an extended view of what s in front of the vehicle to ensure a better cross-traffic view of oncoming vehicles. A lens washer is built in. The 4 cameras in each sideview mirror, along with the front and back relay fullcolor images (including a bird s-eye view) to the Split-View Display. This system helps drivers see the ground in front of or around the vehicle to help avoid obstacles, or to help line up the vehicle when parking. This technology helps take the angst out of parallel parking. With the simple press of a button, ultrasonic sensors can detect an appropriate parallel parking spot and automatically steer the vehicle into the space. The driver controls the accelerator, gearshift and brakes. Ultrasonic sensors help make getting into and out of virtually all parking spaces stress-free. Active park assist and perpendicular park assist identify appropriately sized parallel and perpendicular parking spots, steering the vehicle into the one selected. Park out assist steers the vehicle out of its parking spot. Going in or coming out, the driver controls the accelerator, gearshift and brakes, while the system takes care of the steering. ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL 2 ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL 2 WITH STOP-AND-GO AUTOLAMP AUTO START-STOP TECHNOLOGY BLIS (BLIND SPOT INFORMATION SYSTEM) WITH CROSS-TRAFFIC ALERT 2 DRIVER ALERT SYSTEM FORWARD SENSING SYSTEM HILL DESCENT CONTROL 2 When activated, adaptive cruise control provides everything conventional cruise control does keeping a constant speed without having to work the accelerator pedal plus it automatically maintains a comfortable preset distance from the vehicles ahead. Upon activation, the system performs all the conveniences of adaptive cruise control (see description at left). In addition, it has the capacity to actually follow the vehicle in front to a complete stop while maintaining a preset gap and then resume acceleration. In the Autolamp position, the headlamps will turn on automatically when necessary or whenever the windshield wipers activate. The headlamps will also stay on for a set period of time after the driver turns off the ignition and exits the vehicle. In an effort to help reduce vehicle tailpipe emissions, improve fuel economy and eliminate wasted fuel, the engine switches off when the vehicle is stationary and the driver has pressure on the brake pedal. A confidence booster for drivers changing lanes or backing out of a parking space. BLIS alerts when the sensors detect a vehicle is in a blind spot (a light illuminates on the sideview mirror) Cross-traffic alert warns when the sensors detect traffic approaching from the sides when the vehicle is in Reverse, such as when backing out of a parking space (a light illuminates on the sideview mirror and chimes sound in the cabin) A forward-facing camera can detect lane markings on the road ahead. If the system detects the driver s alertness level is reduced below a certain threshold, a chime sounds and a message appears in the cluster display. When the vehicle is in Drive and traveling at a low rate of speed, ultrasonic sensors on the front bumper determine the distance of certain objects in front of the vehicle. If an object is detected, a high-pitched tone sounds. While descending steep grades on various surface conditions, the driver can set and maintain a vehicle speed between 3 and 20 mph. 6 Remember that even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It s always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions. 2 Driver-Assist features are supplemental and do not replace the driver s attention, judgment, and need to control the vehicle. 208 SAFETY, DRIVER-ASSIST & OTHER TECHNOLOGIES fleet.ford.com fleet 7
6 DRIVER-ASSIST TECHNOLOGIES OTHER TECHNOLOGIES HILL START ASSIST LANE-KEEPING SYSTEM,2 PRE-COLLISION ASSIST WITH PEDESTRIAN DETECTION RAIN-SENSING WINDSHIELD WIPERS REVERSE SENSING SYSTEM SYNC 4 SYNC 3 4 DYNAMIC TORQUE VECTORING On a slope, this technology helps to momentarily keep the vehicle from rolling when releasing the brake pedal. It allows time for the driver to transition their foot to the accelerator pedal. The system helps the driver bring the vehicle back into the traveling lane by providing steering assistance and alerting to unintentional drifting. Lane-Keeping Alert 2 warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel if the vehicle starts to drift into another lane Lane-Keeping Aid 2 applies steering torque, which can help direct the driver to steer the vehicle back into the lane With the help of a forward-facing camera, the system monitors proximity from a vehicle or pedestrian in front. When a potential frontal collision is detected, collision warning 3 alerts with visible and audible signals. If needed, brake support 3 precharges brake-assist sensitivity for full responsiveness. When the system deems a collision imminent, active braking 3 may automatically apply the brakes. Once set, they automatically turn on and adjust the rate of wiper action depending on the amount of moisture (rain, sleet or snow) detected on the windshield. While slowly backing up, ultrasonic sensors on the rear bumper can help detect certain objects up to 6' behind the vehicle. Upon getting closer to the object, a low-pitch tone sounds more rapidly inside the vehicle. This voice-activated technology helps drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. It lets drivers use their voice to make a call, listen to music, access select apps with SYNC AppLink, 5 and much more. Drivers can control calls, music and more with just a touch and their voice. SYNC 3 lets drivers keep hands on the wheel while it quickly responds to spoken requests. Or the responsive touchscreen in the center of the instrument panel can be accessed for its many helpful features. The system also features 2 smart charging USB ports to help keep devices powered up and ready to go. Teaming up with all-wheel drive (AWD) to send up to 00% of the available rear-axle torque to a single outside rear wheel while cornering, the end result is a smooth and seamless driving experience. ELECTRIC POWER-ASSISTED STEERING (EPAS) INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER INTELLIGENT 3-BLINK TURN SIGNAL QUICKCLEAR ELECTRIC WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TORQUE VECTORING CONTROL (TVC) TOW/HAUL MODE WITH INTEGRATED ENGINE BRAKE An electric, speed-sensitive steeringassist system, EPAS helps deliver great maneuverability and responsive handling. Pull-drift compensation adapts to changing conditions, such as crowned roads or steady crosswinds. Active nibble control (if so equipped) helps smooth out the effect of minor tire vibrations. This factory-installed controller synchronizes the vehicle and electric trailer brakes. It includes GAIN adjusters, a GAIN setting display, an output bar graph, and a visual/ audible indicator for successful trailer connection or a trailer disconnect. Especially beneficial for a simple lane change: With a single tap of the turn-signal lever, the signal blinks 3 times and then it stops automatically. It can also be set to function for longer periods, such as when indicating a turn. A transparent heating element embedded in the windshield greatly helps clear snow, ice and fogging, reducing the need to scrape the windshield. Allows drivers to select from 4 modes that help balance 4WD, engine, transmission and traction-control systems to various situations and road conditions encountered.. Normal (for everyday driving) 2. Mud/Rut 3. Sand 4. Snow/Gravel/Grass Operating automatically, it helps keep the vehicle tracking along the driver s intended path, even when road surfaces may compromise intention. While accelerating through a corner, TVC adjusts the speed between the front wheels to enhance cornering agility and reduce understeer. Braking is applied to the front inside wheel, so more engine torque goes to the outside wheel, which has more grip. Tow/haul mode helps provide better control when hauling a heavy trailer load down steep grades. It downshifts the transmission when needed to provide additional levels of engine braking. Helping slow down the vehicle and trailer, the integrated engine brake harnesses the force of the Power Stroke Turbo Diesel. 8 Driver-assist features are supplemental and do not replace the driver s attention, judgment and need to control the vehicle. 2 Lane-Keeping System does not control steering. 3 Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection can detect pedestrians, but not in all conditions and does not replace safe driving. See owner s manual for system limitations. 4 Don t drive while distracted. Use voice-operated systems when possible; don t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all features are compatible with all phones. 5 Commands may vary by phone and AppLink software. 208 SAFETY, DRIVER-ASSIST & OTHER TECHNOLOGIES fleet.ford.com fleet 9
