7 This has gone in. And this is what comes out. The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fine engineering always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfficientDynamics. It includes the visionary CleanEnergy hydrogen-powered engine, already used in a number of completely emission-free BMW 7 Series Saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes a multi-awardwinning BMW EfficientDynamics technology package as standard that boosts dynamics even further whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. High Precision Injection In this cutting-edge generation of petrol direct injection, the Piezo injectors are positioned very close to the spark plugs. They inject the fuel at high pressure and with extreme precision. With the four-cylinder models, the injectors central positioning means only part of the combustion chamber needs to be filled with an ignitable petrol-air mixture. The engine can then run leanly and so efficiently, precisely in the heavily used moderate load range. Auto Start/Stop function BMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed manual transmission automatically shut down when the vehicle is stationary, for example at a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is activated again. This innovation significantly reduces fuel consumption especially in c i t yt r a f fi c. Optimum Shift Indicator Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction with 6-speed manual transmission comes in. It shows the driver what gear to use in order to drive more efficiently. Air vent control Engine management signals the engine s current cooling capacity requirements constantly while driving, rendering a permanent airstream through the radiator unnecessary. The air vents in front of the radiator open or close depending on the environmental temperature and road speed. When shut they improve aerodynamics, shorten the engine s warm-up time and so reduce fuel consumption. Electrical steering In comparison with conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant for example at high speed along the motorway the electric motor is inactive. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance While driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, thus reducing deformation. Brake Energy Regeneration To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver either takes the foot off the accelerator or brakes previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel. BMW already offers 23 models with CO 2 emissions of 140 g/km and significantly less. But that s just for starters. We re carrying on our research with EfficientDynamics in the quest to bring you more driving pleasure and less emissions. Some BMW EfficientDynamics features are dependent on the car s equipment and are not available for all model variants. 8 s Standard equipment o Optional equipment o Xenon Headlights for high and low beam, incl. daytime driving lights, four light rings and automatic headlight range control, for better road illumination at night or in bad weather. o Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution incl. turning lights, only in conjunction with Xenon Headlights: for optimal and prompt illumination of bends through electromechanical control of the moveable lamps as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel. o High-beam assistant helps the driver at night by automatically switching from high to low beam for oncoming traffic and cars ahead, or when street lighting is sufficient. s Rear light with LED indicators: each taillight is made up of three separate highperformance LED strips, accentuating the tailgate s dynamic feel. o Fog lights (standard on 125i and 123d) integrated in the front apron ensure extra safety in poor visibility. Option includes exterior mirror heating and screen washer nozzles (heated on 125i, 135i and 123d). o Lights package includes vicinity lights in the door handles, which upon unlocking the doors illuminate the area outside the doors for 20 seconds to enable safe vehicle access in the dark. Also included: reading lights at the front, footwell illumination at the front, vanity mirror lights for driver and front passenger and ambient lighting. s Dynamic Braking Lights help vehicles travelling behind you to evaluate your braking more accurately. In the event of an emergency stop, the illuminated area of the brake lights is increased, so traffic following behind can tell in an instant the difference between a light tap on the brake pedal and a hard stop for increased driving safety. o Rain sensor including automatic driving lights control: Once activated, the rain sensor will automatically switch on the windscreen wipers when it begins to rain, adjusting the wiper frequency in line with rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic driving lights control activates the low beam automatically at dusk and in tunnels. o Trailer tow hitch with removable ballhead (not available on 135i).

9 s Standard equipment o Optional equipment o Wind deflector allows for comfortable top-down driving without draughts and annoying turbulence around the shoulders and neck. The wind deflector is easy to use and can be folded and stowed away in the luggage compartment to save space. s Soft top features multi-layered lining and integrates harmoniously into the shape of the convertible (shown here in optional Anthracite with Silver effect). The cabin is insulated to impressive effect against noise and extreme temperatures. s Rear windscreen is heated, made of scratch- and dirt-resistant glass and guarantees a clear view at all times. s Exterior mirrors, painted in body colour, with electric adjustment, aspheric (heated on125i, 135i and 123d). o Chrome Line Exterior includes chrome trim for the A-pillar, window recess finishers, folding top cover and belt guide point. The door sills with chrome inlay, the mirror triangle and mirror frame are in Black, high gloss (standard on 125i, 135i and 123d). o Shadow Line, high-gloss includes the surrounds of the A-pillar, window recess finishers and folding top cover, as well as the mirror triangle and mirror frame finished in Black, high-gloss. s Door entry sills with BMW lettering and polished chrome inlay (only on 125i, 135i and 123d).

Immensely smooth, with perfect ratios and precise, short-throw gearshifts. The addition of a sixth gear means that the gear ratios are more closely spaced, enabling you to make even more individual use of the engine s power. o 6-speed automatic transmission (here with non-smoker package) with Adaptive Transmission Management (ATM) and Steptronic. This transmission performs very fast, flawless gearshifts for maximum dynamic performance (on 135i only available with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel). s Start/Stop button to start the engine. o Comfort access system to open and close the vehicle without needing the radio remote control unit in your hand. In addition, the engine can be started without the key. The top is opened and closed with the radio remote control. o Cruise Control stores and maintains a desired speed above approx. 30 km/h (activated using the left-hand steering-column stalk). After accelerating, the vehicle automatically returns to the previously stored speed. Braking cancels the setting. o Storage compartment package comprises cupholder, luggage nets on the backs of front seats, 12-V socket, two tensioning straps on luggage compartment floor as well as an illuminated storage tray on top of the instrument panel (not available in conjunction with a navigation system*). * Not available in all countries. Plus on-board computer with LCD showing mileage counter and trip counter. s On-board computer, provides information about average speed, average and current consumption, range and outside temperature. It also features an acoustic ice warning system. s Optimum Shift Indicator lets you know when it is more economical to drive in another gear. It indicates when to shift up or down and adapts these recommendations to your driving style. While accelerating, for example, you would receive a shift recommendation that would save fuel (for models with 6-speed manual transmission). s Auto Start/Stop display signals on the info display when the engine has been switched off by the Auto Start/Stop function (e.g. at traffic lights or in a jam). In addition, the 135i boasts sports seats, Black high-gloss interior trim as well as 18" light-alloy wheels star-spoke style 264 with mixed tyres. The special front apron adds to the sporty character while the M aerodynamic kit comprising side skirts and a powerful rear apron with integrated diffuser adds even more striking lines. s Front apron: under the BMW double kidney-shaped grille with chrome kidney slats, the central air intake is a draw for the eye as well. The two side air intakes serve to cool the brakes and give the front a particularly athletic profile.
