2 HERITAGE History of the Hottest Golf While the original Volkswagen GTI started the hot hatch phenomenon in 1976, engineers at Volkswagen wanted to explore even more extreme performance represented by the letter R. The result was the race-ready Volkswagen Golf R32 and Golf R! Mk4 Golf R32: MY2004 The first R model was a 2004 Golf R32, with a 240-hp 3.2-liter VR6 engine, and 4MOTION. The U.S. version was limited to only 5,000 units, all equipped with a 6-speed manual. Mk5 Golf R32: MY2008 The second generation R32 increased power to 250 hp from its 3.2L VR6 engine. With its DSG transmission and 4MOTION, 0-60 came up in about 6 seconds. Again, production was limited to only 5,000 units for the U.S. market. Mk6 Golf R: MY Now with two fewer cylinders, but more horsepower, the Golf R was powered by a more potent version of the GTI s 2.0L turbo four, cranking out 256 hp. 4MOTION and a 6-speed manual came equipped as standard equipment. 5 HIGH PERFORMANCE FEATURES Golf R Powertrain The Golf R has one of the most powerful four-cylinder engines available: an advanced version of the EA888 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0L TSI. With 36 horsepower more than the previous version, the new engine is rated at: 292 horsepower at 5,500 rpm 280 lb.-ft. in a broad torque plateau from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm Initially, the Golf R will be available with a six-speed DSG transmission with paddle shifters. A six-speed manual transmission will be available later as a 2016 model. Part of the Golf R s extraordinary handling and traction is due to its permanent all-wheel drive system and advanced drivetrain technology: 4MOTION The Golf R features a permanent all-wheel-drive system the latest version of 4MOTION. When driving under light throttle or while coasting, front wheels are driven while the rear wheels are decoupled, helping to save fuel. But, when needed, torque is transferred between front and rear, with up to 100 percent to the rear axle. Fifth-generation Haldex coupling The fifth-generation Haldex coupling uses an electro-hydraulic oil pump to transfer power to the rear axle in the 4MOTION system. In mere fractions of a second, the all-wheel-drive system is engaged before any wheelspin occurs, helping to eliminate nearly all traction losses. XDS+ cross differential lock The Golf R is equipped with the XDS cross differential lock at the front and rear. The latest version, known as XDS+ uses brake pressure applied to the inside wheel to operated like a limited-slip differential and compensate for understeer during fast corninging. The result is a larger range of dynamic performance, helping make the vehicle more agile. Two-stage ESC Sport When the driver presses the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) button briefly, the system engages ESC Sport mode. In very fast driving on a race track, the ESC system has a higher threshold in this mode. When the ESC button is pressed for longer than three seconds, the system is fully deactivated for high-performance track driving, a feature that is available only on the Golf R Golf R 5

Independent sport suspension The Golf R s sport suspension is 0.8 inches lower than a standard Golf, and is even lower than the GTI, by 0.2 inches. In the Golf R, the strut-type front suspension has a newly developed lower control arm and the multi-link rear suspension has enhanced tuning of the toe-link bearings. Progressive variable-ratio electric power-assisted steering The new progressive variable-ratio steering perceptibly reduces steering effort in low-speed maneuvering, yet provides enhanced feedback to the driver on winding country roads. There are only 2.1 turns of the wheel (756 degrees) from lock to lock, compared with 2.75 turns (990 degrees) for standard Golf models. Powerful disc brakes, F=13.4"; R=12.2" Even larger than the GTI s brakes, the Golf R has 13.4-inch diameter vented discs up front, while the rear rotors are 12.2 inches. The powerful brakes feature black brake calipers with the R logo on them. Driving Modes The Driving Mode Selection feature has three programs in the Golf R: Comfort, Normal, and Sport. An optional Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system is available that adds further adaptive control and four selectable suspension modes, specially designed for the Golf R. Also featured is ESC Sport with Race Mode, intended for high-speed track driving. In this mode, damping is increased and engine response and the DSG transmission shift points are configured to be even sportier. When equipped also with DCC, the driver can choose to combine mode settings to suit individual preferences Golf R 6
