3 A S K T H E MOTOR MEDICS Automotive Advice from the Under The Hood Show I listen to your show every week and hear that Chris has bought a Toyota Prius. Welcome to the family Chris, I am a Prius owner too. I have found that we Prius owners are a varied bunch. Some of us drive them for the cool features, others for the green element of the car, and ones like me who just want the best mileage I can get and when I ran across the Prius it just seemed to fit at the time. There are so many things to learn though I almost could use a school on the thing. My question is about the mileage that has really dropped. I have about 30,000 miles on the car and I bought new tires a month ago. The tires are the exact brand as what I had before but when I had them installed I noticed an immediate change of almost 3mpg less than before the tire change. Can there be something wrong with the tires that could cause this? Thank you, Kelly in Lemmon South Dakota Dear Kelly, Changing tires usually won t make a noticeable difference but on a Prius every aspect of the car has been designed to help with fuel economy so tires play a part in the mpg. When you purchase tires it s important to go with low rolling resistance tires made for a hybrid. And with some hybrids once the tires have a thousand miles or so you may see the mileage increase. I am moving up to the oil fields of North Dakota to work and I am going to purchase a good used SUV before I go to replace my car. I have never needed a fourwheel drive before but where I am moving it will be required to get to and from work every day. I have been looking at Jeeps Grand Cherokees and Trailblazers and some others in that size class and I m really confused about the four-wheel drive on them. Some are all-wheel drive, some are four-wheel drive, and some are both. What s the difference? Thank you, John in Sterling Illinois Dear John, This is a great question that we get often at the radio show. All of the systems you mentioned will do the same basic thing, move all four wheels through lose traction conditions. Which system you choose depends on how often you will use it and personal choice. All-wheel drive is just like it sounds, all the time the wheels are driven without the driver turning the system on which helps maintain traction at any time needed without driver input. 4 wheel drive has a switch to turn the system on and off and in the two wheel drive position saves the most fuel but it can t be used on mostly dry ground like the all-wheel drive. Some Jeeps have both systems combined. Before you buy read more detailed descriptions online that can help you choose. Although I am not a car lover or mechanically inclined in any form or fashion I love the entertainment of the show and have learned a thing or two about cars that has helped me out in the past. I know you are gentle with your listeners when one calls in with something that would seem stupid to most shops and that is why I decided to write you before I check with my shop in hopes that I can fix my problem on my own. I usually don t do any car repairs myself, not even oil changes or light bulbs but last week I decided to check the fluids under the hood on my 99 Pontiac Bonneville and noticed my antifreeze was low so I added some to the little bottle on the fender. The problem is that the little bottle was for washer fluid instead of engine coolant. I have not used the washers since the fill and don t want to go to my shop and tell them what I did. On this car you can pull off the hose on the tank bottom attached to the pump and you can catch the fluid in a container. Then rinse with water and refill with washer fluid. That s it. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix with the supercharged 3.8 engine. I had the car into the shop about six months ago and had the brakes repaired as they were grinding. They replaced pads and rotors on the front and rear and a passenger side axle shaft at the same time. Recently the abs and traction lights have started to come on then go off while I drive. They stay on for a few minutes to several days. Is there something related to the brake job or is this some new problem that needs to be addressed and what. Thank you, Samantha in Muncie Indiana Dear Samantha, I don t think that the brake work you had done six months ago is related to the problem you are having today. The brake pads and rotors are part of the mechanical brake system while the abs/trac light is part of the electronics of the antilock brake system. On many GM cars and trucks these lights will come on in this way and it is usually a sensor that has failed or more commonly a broken wire on one of the front speed sensors. If it is a broken wire some shops may choose to repair it instead of replacing the entire sensor which will save you money. The wires move a lot when driving so they are subject to break with age. Have your shop take a look and advise you of what is needed. I have been reading your column for a few months now and just last week found your radio show and tuned in. I must say, for someone like me who knows nothing about cars and never really cared to, I find the show and the column hard to miss. Each week I learn something new and have been able to use your advice to save money. Guys I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 3.8 engine. I have put about 110,000 miles on this van and have never done anything other than change the oil until I found you guys. I have now had the transmission flushed and a complete inspection done and it all came back with a good bill of health. At this point they say I need to have the fuel injection cleaned and that will help boost my mpg. It will cost for the service. Is this a good price? I can buy a can for and poor it in the tank. You brush twice a day to help maintain them but you need to see the dentist for regular cleanings. You can poor the can in the tank every so often but you need a regular cleaning professionally on a regular basis.
