Since that time they have enjoyed a cruise to the Bahamas, Pipestem State Park, North Myrtle Beach, Asheville and Forest City. Debra and Don Edmonds, daughter and son-in-law of the Chandlers, note that much planning is done to make the best use of time that they spend at each location. The Chandler family includes another daughter, Cheryl Chandler; the Edmonds triplet daughters and their spouses, Beth and John Cornett, Lynn and Charlie Wilkes and Karen and Joshua Apple, who are expecting a son in October; and the great-grandchildren, Noah Wilkes and Allison Apple. Also on the Gatlinburg trip was Jonathan Hale, a family friend. This year at Gatlinburg activities included Ober Gatlinburg and the Aquarium. Don Edmonds captured photos of the family with the beautiful mountains as the background. Debra said plans are already under way for their next family excursion. Webb. After a year of committee preparation, the North Surry High School Class of 1960 celebrated its 50th reunion at Cross Creek Country Club on June 26. North Surry High School, established in 1959, was the first consolidated high school in Surry County and was made up of Beulah, Lowgap, Flat Rock, Franklin and White Plains high schools. The first senior class of North Surry High School graduated 138 students. Swanson Snow, class president, welcomed the group and Mary Thomas Carter Mason recognized special guest teachers, Goldie Sparger, Ivelyn Martin, Dorthy Hicks, Swanson Richards and J.L. Hiatt. Kaye Chappell Puckett gave the invocation and dinner was served. The class held a candle lighting ceremony to celebrate the lives of the 22 class members who are now deceased. The evening adjourned with dancing and socializing. Gray and Gloria Bunn enjoy the reunion.

Seventeen class members, their guests and two former principals enjoyed the meal and fellowship. Beck has been an important part of the Shoals School family for more than five years. She has two daughters who are students at the school, Sydney, in third grade, and Kendall, in fifth grade. Throughout the school year, Beck has been a constant presence in each of these grade levels. So far this year, she has volunteered more than 200 hours at Shoals. 12 JULY 22, 2010 SURRY SCENE 13 SCHOOL NEWS Tailgate cookout SURRY COMMUNITY COLLEGE/SUBMITTED PHOTO At Surry Community College April 16, a faculty/staff tailgate cookout is held. It was put on by the social team and was a way for employees to mingle and have fun during this busy time of year. It was at the Angus Tucker field while the Knights baseball team practiced for its game against Guilford Tech to be held that weekend.

Mike Klapmeyer of Westfield, a Ph.D. candidate majoring in civil engineering in the College of Engineering, has been inducted into Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society at Virginia Tech. Chi Epsilon recognizes the outstanding achievement of the individual student and promotes development of characteristics deemed fundamental to the pursuit of a successful engineering career. Requirements for eligibility to be a member of this honor society include completion of half of the required coursework for a bachelor s degree or one semester of graduate school, achievement of class rank in the top third percentile, fulfillment of pledge requirements, and payment of lifetime membership fee. The Virginia Tech Chi Epsilon chapter was formed in 1941, marking the 18th chapter of the expanding network of 129 chapters formed since the organization was founded at the University of Illinois in Membership into Chi Epsilon is a mark of excellence readily recognized by others, including future employers.
