4 2018 METRIS CONSIDERATIONS ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS TO ENSURE THE BEST USE OF THE CUSTOMER S BRAND-NEW METRIS VAN, PLEASE READ BELOW ON WHAT OPTIONS ARE A MUST BASED ON CUSTOMER NEED. Below you will find highlighted information on suggested ways to build and equip a Metris Passenger and Cargo Van. A full list of Metris Do s and Don ts can be found on NetStar and be answered by the Upfitter Management team at Please feel free to contact Mercedes-Benz Vans at vaninfo@mbusa.com with any questions or concerns. YOU WILL NEED AN AU BATTERY IF: Your client plans to install aftermarket electrical equipment with a current draw larger than 25 A, for example: inverters, power tools, cargo, etc. The Aux Battery is included in the optional package (27). ALERTS Please be aware that you CANNOT retrofit this option. YOU WILL NEED A BODY BUILDER CONNECTOR EK1 IF: Your client plans to install aftermarket electrical equipment and needs the following connections: 12-volt positive power (max. 25 A fuse). 12-volt positive signal when the ignition switch is on (max. 20 A fuse). 12-volt positive signal when the engine is running (max. 15 A fuse). ALERTS Please be aware that although the EK1 connector is standard on the Sprinter, it is NOT standard on the Metris. You CANNOT retrofit this option on a Metris. Please note that the EK1 connector CANNOT be ordered together with the optional PSM (option code ED5). YOU WILL NEED PSM (ED5) IF: Your client plans to install aftermarket electrical equipment and needs the signals to trigger certain functions such as: Vehicle status - Terminal 15 (ignition signal), Terminal 61 (engine running signal). Light status - Light switch and steering column switch requests (e.g., high beams, turn signals, low beams, front fog lamps, etc.), upper control panel hazard warning flasher, external locking. Windshield status - Front and rear wipers, windshield and rear window heater. Central locking - Doors open/closed, unlocked/locked. Chassis CAN information - Wheel speed, speed, engine speed, cruise control operation, brakes activated, transmission, clutch information, steering angle, speedometer information as per the FMS standard. ALERTS Standard on the Sprinter and NOT STANDARD on the Metris. Please be aware that you CANNOT retrofit this option. It continuously monitors the signals from the steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensors, lateral acceleration sensor and yaw sensor, allowing it to assist the driver if instability is detected. In critical situations, ESP actively intervenes in the engine management and braking system and assists the driver by generating braking forces to restore directional stability. 39 ADJUSTABLE STEERING WHEEL (ANGLE) S The steering wheel is adjustable for inclination based on the requirements of the individual driver, improving the ergonomics. A lever below the steering column is released in order to adjust the steering wheel. Allows for ergonomic seating position. LEATHER MULTIFUNCTION STEERING WHEEL WITH TRIP COMPUTER CL3/CL4 The leather steering wheel has a three-spoke design with a chrome clasp. The steering wheel is lined with premium leather and is perforated in the grip area. The multifunction steering wheel features two control buttons. It can be used to access and adjust a wide range of functions such as the trip computer, radio volume, telephone, navigation and other vehicle settings. The relevant information is shown in the central instrument cluster display. The keypad on the left is used to operate the menus while the keypad on the right controls the audio and telephone functions. Door handles and outside mirrors are not painted and keep the anthracite-grained plastic finish. Enhances design and look of the vehicle. BUMPERS PRIMED FOR PAINTING CM3 The front and rear bumper surfaces are filled/primed in gray at the plant. This facilitates subsequent painting in the desired color. 41 ROOF RAILS, BLACK D12 The black-painted roof rails allow for additional loads to be carried on the vehicle roof and enhance vehicle appearance. The roof rails have a maximum payload of 330 lbs. Basic carrier bars and accessories can be ordered via Mercedes-Benz Accessories. The roof rails increase the vehicle height by When carrying roof loads the weight of the roof carrier system must also be taken into account. Additional loads/luggage can be carried. All vehicles are equipped with connection points whereby the roof rails can be retrofitted. FULL BULKHEAD WITH THROUGH-LOADING D50 The full bulkhead at the B-pillar protects driver and co-driver from the load and shields the driver compartment from the cargo area. Its design allows the backrest of the driver s seat to be adjusted. The partition protects the driver s compartment from dirt, dust and noise from the cargo area. It also improves climate control comfort as the driver compartment can reach a pleasant temperature sooner. 50 PRE-INSTALLATION BECKER MAP PILOT EV6 Pre-installation Becker MAP PILOT enables the Audio 15 system to be upgraded to a full-fledged navigation system with the Becker MAP PILOT at a later date without any additional installation costs. Customers can conveniently use the Becker MAP PILOT from another vehicle. If the Becker MAP PILOT comes from another vehicle it could be necessary to enter the security code (only when the anti-theft protection is active). Included are the following components: Cradle for Becker MAP PILOT in glove compartment Wired connection between glove compartment and Audio 15 GPS receiver Allows retrofitting and use of a single navigation module in multiple vehicles. The unit s commissioning starts with the installation into the glove compartment cradle. When commissioning the system it may take up to 30 minutes to determine a position. PARKTRONIC WITH ACTIVE PARKING ASSIST EZ7 Helps the driver when searching for and maneuvering into and out of parking spaces. It searches for suitable parking spaces at a speed of up to 18 mph and automatically steers the vehicle into parallel and perpendicular spaces. In the case of parallel parking, it also assists with maneuvering out of the space. If the driver engages reverse gear and confirms the parking request then steering is performed automatically: the driver only has to operate the accelerator and engage the gears. The parking maneuver is completed in a maximum of seven moves. The driver can intervene at any time and correct or cancel the parking maneuver. Active Parking Assist is automatically engaged when driving forward at speeds up to 21 mph. At speeds below 18 mph, the system indicates that it has located a suitable parking space by displaying a P symbol and a directional arrow in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. After activating the parking procedure, PARKTRONIC uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor the front and rear area up to a speed of 11 mph. If there is the risk of a collision, a visual warning indication is displayed in the instrument cluster and/or in the rear roof lining and an audible warning signal is also sounded. 51 BECKER MAP PILOT E1N Becker MAP PILOT upgrades the Audio 15 system into a full-fledged navigation unit and it is completely integrated in the on-board electronics via a cradle in the glove compartment. The Becker MAP PILOT module is easily removable and can be shared among several vehicles (with appropriate pre-installation). The system can be operated via the keypad of the Audio 15 or the optionally available multifunction steering wheel, code CL4. All functions and navigation details will be shown on the Audio 15 display or the optionally available pixelmatrix display. The route guidance recommendations are announced through the vehicle s speaker. The radio volume will be lowered automatically during the announcement. The map-based navigation can be displayed optionally in 2D/3D including 3D points of interest, 3D city modeling and 3D terrain modeling. Additionally, it is possible to show speed limits for many roads, special destinations such as gas stations or restaurants as well as information on remaining distance, arrival time or street names. Further functions like the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for dynamic traffic avoidance or the calculation of the most economical route are also available. High-quality, fully integrated navigation system that s also easy to operate. Updates for map data operating software and other features and services can be done easily via PC and the Internet. Map data updates are free of charge within the first 60 days after the unit s commissioning. The 60-day countdown starts with the first initiation in the cradle. 56 FS5 ILLUMINATED VANITY MIRRORS The illuminated vanity mirrors include mirrors in the sun visors with lights integrated into the roof lining, which can be switched on/off by folding the mirror cover. Allows passengers to use the vanity mirrors in low lighting. FZ5 ANTI-THEFT ALARM SYSTEM The anti-theft alarm system is automatically armed when the central locking system is activated. The alarm is triggered if there is an attempt to: Open a door Unlock a door from the inside Open the hood Use the emergency key The anti-theft warning system is activated approximately 30 seconds after the vehicle has been locked using the remote key. To confirm arming, the blinkers flash three times and the indicator light in the overhead control panel also flashes. If the alarm system is triggered by one of the above-mentioned activities, the horn is sounded at intervals for approximately 25 seconds and the indicators flash for approximately 4 minutes at twice their normal frequency. When the unlock button on the remote key is held down (for more than one second) within the reception range of the infrared sensor on the driver s door handle, the vehicle is unlocked and the front side windows open. The vehicle ventilation will be also activated for two minutes with lower fan speed. The windows can be closed in the same way using the convenience closing function by holding down the locking button on the remote key. The windows can be completely or only partially closed or opened, depending on how long the remote key is pressed. The vehicle ventilation will also be disabled. 59 G42 7G-TRONIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION The 7G-TRONIC Automatic Transmission features seven gears that keep the engine speed low in all driving situations. The wide gear ratio range and finely graduated gears reduce the leaps in revs when changing gear. This leads to comfortable gear-changing and saves fuel. The system includes Start-Off Assist, a kick-down switch, parking lock and measures to support safe operation. The 7G-TRONIC transmission is operated via the DIRECT SELECT selector lever on the right of the steering wheel column. This code adds an additional heat exchanger and modified control software to generate increased output from the automatic climate control. Recommended for hot climate regions or where there is a requirement for increased cooling. More rapid cooling. Requires code HH4. HEATED FRONT SEATS H15/H16 Filaments in the seat cushions and backrest are controlled by a three-stage switch in the front door panels. If stage three has been selected for rapid heating, the system automatically switches to stage two after approximately 7 minutes. 62 AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL HH4 Divides the heating, cooling and ventilation of the interior into two separate controllable zones for driver and passenger side. It automatically regulates the air flow/fan speed, air distribution, air recirculation and humidity according to the desired temperature. This helps create pleasant climate in the vehicle and fog-free windows. The system works with numerous sensors, which provide information about the outside temperature, sunlight, humidity and other parameters. In addition, an activated carbon filter ensures that purified air is distributed with both circulating air and fresh air mode. Dust, pollen, odors and pollutants are filtered out of the air. The setting of temperature, air flow, air distribution, heated rear window and all other basic functions of the system can be controlled via buttons on the control panel. The automatic climate control uses residual engine heat to keep the interior warm without the engine running. Maximum climate comfort, improves air quality. Requires LD0 and FZ8. AIR CONDITIONING, FRONT HH9 Allows the heating, cooling and ventilation of the interior. After setting a desired temperature, the air flow is adjusted automatically. The amount of air/fan speed, air distribution and air recirculation mode can be manually adjusted according to individual needs. 63 ELECTRICAL BOOSTER FOR HEATING HZ0 The heater booster consists of individual PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficent) thermistors in a retaining frame, and has a total rated output of approximately 1.2 kw. The heater booster is fitted directly at the air outlets to keep heat losses to a minimum. The heated air is transferred to the vehicle interior via the heating/blower system. The heat output of the PTC thermistors is high at low temperatures, and declines as the temperature rises. When subjected to an electrical voltage, the ceramic heating elements heat up and feed their warmth to the heating system. When the engine is started (and running smoothly), the electric heater booster is gradually powered up from 0 to 100% output within 28 seconds. Near-immediate heat output, aids defrosting of windows. REAR AIR CONDITIONING UNIT, IN D-PILLAR HZ7 The rear air conditioning unit in the D-pillar includes a second evaporator and an additional heat exchanger installed in the rear. Coming from the evaporator, the cooled air passes through ceiling ducts and flows from four vents on the right and left sides of the second- and third-seat rows. The roof ducts support three different ventilation modes: passenger flow, indirect flow and defogging of the side windows. The outlet temperature is controlled automatically. The rear climate zone can be switched on/off via the push button REAR in the central climate control. In this case the air temperature and air volume are the same as set for the front climate. 65 WASHER FLUID LEVEL WARNING LIGHT JA1 A warning lamp in the instrument cluster is activated if the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir falls below the minimum. Alerts driver to fill up washer fluid. Standard equipment for all vehicles. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST JA6 Supports the driver in maintaining the minimum distance to the vehicle in front. The system provides a visual warning when the distance to the vehicle in front drops below the minimum. If there is a risk of a collision an audible warning is also emitted. At the same time the system activates the Brake Assist BAS PRO which if the driver fails to brake heavily enough automatically increases the braking pressure. The system detects vehicles in front from a speed of 5 mph. The system monitors the area in front of the vehicle with the aid of a medium-range radar sensor with a range of approximately 213 feet. A red triangular warning lamp appears in the instrument cluster when the distance to the vehicle in front falls below the minimum for several seconds. If the distance continues to decrease rapidly an intermittent warning is also sounded. The brake boost assistance provided by Brake Assist BAS PRO is canceled again once the system no longer detects any potential dangerous situations. The intervention of Brake Assist can be interrupted by the driver by releasing the pressure on the brake pedal or pressing the accelerator. If the driver requires more braking power than applied by the system then the driver s requirements will prevail. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST does not carry out autonomous braking. In addition, the system does not feature pedestrian detection. The system detects vehicles ahead that are either moving or stopping. The radar sensor is on the passenger side of the front bumper. 66 BLIND SPOT ASSIST JA7 Blind Spot Assist recognizes vehicles in the blind spot using two short-range radar sensors located in the rear bumper. The detection area extends from the B-pillar approximately 11 feet to each side of the vehicle and 9 feet behind the rear end. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red triangle warning appears in the exterior mirror. Should the driver operate the blinker for a lane change despite this visual warning, the triangle symbol starts to flash and a double warning tone is sounded additionally. The system is active in a speed range from 19 mph to the vehicle s maximum speed. Blind Spot Assist can be activated and deactivated via the menu on the on-board computer. Improves safety. Blind Spot Assist is deactivated at speeds below 18 mph, when in reverse gear and when towing a trailer connected to the trailer socket. CROSSWIND ASSIST JA8 Detects strong gusts of crosswind and helps the driver to stay on course. At speeds over 50 mph it corrects the vehicle s course by means of automatic braking intervention on the wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind. The specific braking intervention by Hydraulic Brake Assist, which is activated by ADAPTIVE ESP produces a yaw response, which reduces the lateral drift. The sensor is fitted inside at the top center of the windshield and detects the degree of moisture on the windshield. 68 BACKUP ALARM JW0 When reverse gear is engaged, a warning is sounded for those nearby. The system cannot be switched off. The volume of the warning sound can be reduced (for example, at night) when the reverse gear is engaged twice in quick succession. LANE KEEPING ASSIST JW5 Helps to prevent accidents resulting from the vehicle unintentionally leaving its lane. A multifunction camera detects the lane markings and monitors whether the vehicle is staying in its lane. The system evaluates the pictures from the multifunction camera, which is located centrally behind the windshield. Lane markings are recognized by differences in color. The system uses this data and the driver activity to deduce whether the lane has been left intentionally or unintentionally. If the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally, the system gives a warning by pulsating vibrations of the steering wheel. This prompts the driver to make a steering correction. Lane Keeping Assist is active from a vehicle speed above 38 mph. It can be switched on and off using the Assistance menu in the instrument cluster and set to the desired sensitivity. The system can also be deactivated by a button above the rotary light switch. If Lane Keeping Assist detects an active driving style, for example through steering, braking, accelerating or operating the turn signals, no warning from the system will happen. If the system has been deactivated this setting is also retained when the vehicle is restarted. Improves safety. 69 JW8 ATTENTION ASSIST Gives the driver visual and acoustic warnings if it detects typical signs of drowsiness or inattention, and urges the driver to take a break. Steering wheel movements are recorded and used to create an individual driver profile. During the first 15 minutes of driving, ATTENTION ASSIST creates an individual driver profile, which is then continuously compared with the driving style. The factors for assessing the level of attention include steering movements, driving style, travel time and driving time. If ATTENTION ASSIST ascertains that the level of attention is low, it displays the symbol of a coffee cup in the instrument cluster and an acoustic signal is sounded to encourage the driver to take a break. The system is active at speeds between 37 mph and 124 mph. The desired sensitivity of ATTENTION ASSIST can be set or switched off in the instrument cluster. If the sensitive setting is selected for ATTENTION ASSIST, the system warns the driver at an earlier stage as in standard. In addition, the instrument cluster shows how much time has elapsed since the last break and whether the system is inactive due to falling below or exceeding the speed thresholds. Enhances safety. 71 SINGLE CARGO LIGHT IN REAR SIDEWALL L65 A single ceiling light is fitted at the roof frame on the driver s side of the load compartment. It automatically switches on when the doors are opened. It can also be turned on/off via a manual switch. Improves visibility in the cargo area. AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS LA2 The automatic headlights monitor the weather and lighting conditions during a journey and switch the vehicle lights on or off as required. The light switch must be in the AUTO position for automatic on/off driving lights to operate. When lighting conditions change rapidly, for example when driving through tunnels, the assistance system can help the driver and increase driving safety by switching on the lights. The light sensor is located in the middle of the windshield. If the light brightness is below a certain level, the system automatically switches on the driving lights. 76 TWO OVERHEAD INTERIOR LIGHTS IN REAR LD9 Two lights are fitted in the center of the rear passenger compartment. A door contact switch turns the lights on when the rear compartment doors are opened and off when they are closed. The lights can also be switched on and off by means of a switch on the dashboard. The additional interior lights provide more light in the rear passenger compartment, thus improving visibility during entry and exit. Improves visibility during entry and exit. Standard equipment for the Passenger Van. All vehicles ordered with code LC3/LC6 have interior lighting fitted in the rear grab handles. ALTERNATOR EFFICIENCY MANAGEMENT MG9 Alternator efficiency management is based on a dynamic reduction in alternator output during acceleration phases depending on engine loads, reducing engine workload and fuel consumption. On the overrun, e.g., on downhill gradients or when braking, the alternator output is increased to use the vehicle s kinetic energy to charge the vehicle starter battery with no additional fuel consumption. If the battery charge is sufficient, the alternator is switched off and the on-board electrical system is fed by the battery. Reduces fuel consumption. 77 ECO START/STOP MJ8 Reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by switching off the engine when the vehicle is at rest. The vehicle must be at a standstill (0 mph) before the engine is switched off. The engine restarts when the brake pedal is released. An ECO display in the instrument cluster shows when the function is active and the engine is switched off during a standstill. In day-to-day practice and especially in urban traffic with frequent stops, the ECO Start/Stop function is able to achieve fuel savings. The ECO Start/ Stop function is always active in the transmission modes E or C, and can be deactivated via the push button in the upper control panel. In transmission program M, it is automatically turned off and can be turned on manually if necessary. Reduces fuel consumption and C02 emissions. The ECO Start/Stop function does not switch the engine off if the operating temperature necessary for efficient exhaust after treatment or the interior temperature set by the driver has not been reached. ALTERNATOR 14 V/190 A ML4 Optionally available for the Cargo Van, the alternator 14 V/190 A replaces the standard alternator 14 V/175 A. 78 2-LITER, 4-CYLINDER, DIRECT-INJECTION TURBOCHARGED GASOLINE ENGINE The engine M274 DEH is a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an aluminum alloy crank case, direct injection and fast-acting piezo injectors for multiple injection, demand-orientated multi-spark ignition, controlled oil pump, switchable water pump and high-compression one-stage turbocharging. Direct injection: A high-pressure pump with integrated flow control valve is used to generate the required high pressure. The fuel is transported via a high-pressure rail to the centrally located fuel injectors to inject up to five very precise injections per cycle into the combustion chamber. The injectors operate extremely fast and can inject even the smallest amounts of fuel. Due to the high-fuel pressure of approximately 1,885 psi to approximately 2,900 psi the injection nozzle develops a stable hollow-cone beam under all operating conditions. Fuel tank: The fuel tank capacity is gallons. An activated carbon filter installed nearby the fuel tank absorbs the hydrocarbons. MM1 Efficient, state-of-the-art gasoline engine. The maintenance interval for the engine is set at 15,000 miles. ENGINE EMISSIONS LEV III ULEV70 MH6 The M274 engine meets the emissions values of the LEV III ULEV70 exhaust emissions standard with direct-injection homogeneous operation. There are no further measures required for exhaust after treatment since normal three-way catalytic converter adequately neutralizes the pollutants. 79 CRUISE CONTROL MS1 Any speed upward of 19 mph can be set using the cruise control stalk on the steering column. Cruise control maintains the vehicle at a constant speed as long as physically possible. If the set speed is exceeded, the system brakes autonomously (e.g., on downhill gradients). The following functions can be accessed with the cruise control lever: Push up: the current or a higher speed is set. Push down: the current or a lower speed is set. 85 TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING LAMP RY2 Pressure-monitoring sensors on each wheel transmit radio signals to a central control unit. On vehicles with the standard instrument cluster, a warning light illuminates in the event of a pressure loss of approximately 25% at one or more tires. On vehicles with the optionally available code JK3, instrument cluster with pixelmatrix display, an automatic warning is displayed if the pressure in any tire falls below a set minimum value. 92 ELECTRIC SLIDING DOORS T55/T56 Enables the sliding doors to be opened and closed electrically via a switch on the center console, on the B-pillar or via an additional button on the radio remote control. The sliding doors can also be stopped and held in any position. The electric sliding doors are provided with an obstacle detection function for improved protection of people using the doors. If the obstacle detection function detects any resistance during closing, the process is interrupted and the doors open again. During driving the electrical opening function is deactivated. An audible warning is sounded when the sliding doors are opened or closed by the remote control or the operating switch in the center console. Convenience, quiet opening and closing. If the vehicle is equipped with an electric sliding door on both sides the additional key on the radio remote control opens the right side sliding door (factory setting). The operating key can be reassigned to the left sliding door. Initially, the exterior hinges engage at an angle of approximately 90 degrees. The hinges can then be released from this position and the doors opened to 180 degrees. The large opening angle allows easy loading and unloading particularly in the case of bulky loads and when using a forklift.
