1 Before you can order your door system, you'll need to understand common ordering specifications including proper measurement techniques, door swing and handing as well as machining for specific hardware applications. how to measure Purchasing a replacement exterior door requires several measurements of the door opening to allow your new door to fit within the existing space. The door itself may shrink or swell over time and may not fit the original measurements. Taking precise measurements enables a homeowner to choose a replacement door that will require few adjustments. SPECIFICATIONS How to measure for replacement exterior doors 1. Gently pry off the interior door trim. Clean out and remove any insulation from the original prehung system. 2. Take horizontal measurements in three places on the width of the rough opening (top, centre, and bottom) from one edge of the frame to the opposite width of the frame. The rough opening is the gap between your door jamb and the inner edge of your wall or drywall. 3. Take vertical measurements in three places (left, centre, and right) from the edge of the header stud down to the bottom of the door sill or threshold. 4. Measure the thickness of the door jamb to determine if you require 2"x4" (4 9/16"), 2"x6" (6 9/16"), 2" x 8" (8 9/16") or custom jamb construction. Tips & Warnings Over the years, traditional sizes and measurements for construction have changed. Therefore, it is important to measure your door width and jamb depth to ensure you have a product available to meet your required space. If a custom jamb depth is required, please specify the extended frame option, available on page 26. It is also important to note that older doors that need replacing may have changes in their original size from weathering. Doors that warp or do not have adequate sealant for protection can either shrink or swell in size. 1

This refers to which way your exterior door will swing; outward (toward the outside of the house) or inward (toward the inside). Most homes are built to accommodate inswing doors, however, your entry door can be designed to swing outward if preferred. Door handing refers to the direction that the door swings. When viewed from the outside, if the hinges are on your left side and the door is pushing away from you, it is a left hand (LH) inswing. If the hinges are on your right side and the door is pushing away from you, it is a right hand (RH) inswing. The following is a quick list to help provide some guidance when ordering.
