5 Selecting Gatekeeper Courses at NOVA Introduction In compliance with the Achieving the Dream (ATD) initiative, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will use the following parameters as measurements of student success: 1) Successful completion of developmental courses and progression to credit-bearing courses; 2) Enrollment in and successful completion of gatekeeper courses; 3) Completion of the courses they take with a grade of C or higher; 4) Re-enrollment from one semester to the next; 5) Earning of certificates and degree. This report presents data in order to facilitate a discussion identifying gatekeeper courses for the college and campuses 1 at NOVA. The definition of gatekeeper courses at NOVA will be finalized by the ATD team. Some institutions define gatekeeper courses as those courses characterized by high enrollment and low student success rate. The data in this report shows a comparison of course enrollment numbers and student success rates. The success rate was calculated by the following formula: A s+ B s +C s +P s +S s * 100% = success rate A s+ B s + C s+ D s + F s + I s + P s + R s + S s + U s + W s + X s Another common definition of gatekeeper courses are those which are fundamental collegelevel pre-requisites that students must complete before enrolling in more advanced classes necessary for degree completion. In utilizing the data in this report, college administrators have the flexibility of choosing which courses best meet the criteria for a gatekeeper course. Identifying these gatekeeper courses is important in order to better prepare administrators and faculty to implement strategies that improve the success rate of students in these courses. This report is presented in two sections. The first section details the enrollment and success rate data on courses offered by NOVA sorted by class enrollment. The last section shows the enrollment and student success rate data sorted by success rate. This data was collected to facilitate the identification of gatekeeper courses at NOVA in accordance with the second measurement of student success as stated above. 1 Campus data is presented in OIR report No Selecting Gatekeeper Courses by Campus. 1
