1 President s Page August 2014 August seems to have arrived earlier than normal. Perhaps all the rain we received in June has something to do with it, reducing our summer driving time by a third. Maybe the fact that we haven't had any really hot, humid summer days is the reason. Whatever the reason, August is here. I don't know if there are any baseball fans out there but I had the opportunity to attend the Home Run Derby and the MLB All-Star game at Target Field. Thanks to PETCO having the naming rights to the San Diego Padres' ballpark, the corporate office was given four tickets, which were then sent to a regional VP, his wife, and two lucky General Managers, of which I was one (spending half of last summer in North Dakota probably helped). Now I'm not a huge baseball fan but I had a fantastic time. Target Field is an excellent venue. I don't know how many members would be interested in attending a Twins game, but that may be something we'd like to do in August or September as a group (even though the Twins are currently in last place). For those of us who were unable to attend the CORSA National Convention in Tacoma, Washington, there is an article on the LeMay Automotive Museum in the latest issue of Hemming's Classic Car. The facility looks fantastic and should be a must see for anyone who travels to the state of Washington. I'm looking forward to the Communique article on the convention. If any CMI member did make it out west to Tacoma, we expect a full report at our August meeting at Peppermint Twist in Delano. As mentioned, August is upon us so keep those Corvairs cruising. Stay Tuned, Lee Knauf CMI President I want to thank C.J. Schmit for arranging our tour of his work place, Uponor, in Apple Valley. I was fortunate enough to have taken the week off so I was actually able to attend a week day event. I was amazed at how efficient the facility was and how much engineering goes into something as seemingly simple as hose. We had 12 members in attendance which is excellent for a Tuesday morning. Thanks again, C.J.

2 CORVAIR MINNESOTA July 8, 2014 President Lee Knauf called the meeting to order at 7:10 at Minnetonka drive-in in Spring Park. Nearly 40 members and guests were present, Brian who once owned corvairs and belonged to CMI...but graduated to air-cooled Porsches, and Michael, who purchased a 63 Monza coupe with A/C in Texas and took off on vacation in it. Jim Brandberg sorted out some problems for him and he will be continuing on. In this era of diversity, the Porsche joined a Mini and Dave Peterson s fresh Model A coupe in the parking lot. March Minutes: Motion by Fran to approve as written, seconded by John, and carried. Treasurer s Report: We have $2220 in our treasury currently. Recent Activities: June 20 22: Back to the 50 s: State Fair Grounds. Many members attended but the pleasant surprise was Alex Becker s newly completed gold and black Loadside pickup on display. His wife and parents, all hailing from Yankton, SD, were along to greet us. The family has quite a fleet of Corvairs and we were fortunate to become friends last year in K zoo. August 9, 2014: New London New Brighton Rally. We will repeat last year, meeting the rally at Buffalo High School for their noon break. This year we are combining our CMI picnic with this event. This is a unique opportunity to expose your kids/grandkids/neighbors to actual brass era steam and gasoline vehicles when they are under power. August 12: Membership meeting Peppermint Twist in Delano September 6, 2014: Classics by the Lake Car Show Buffalo. This is always another great show, more details next month. Other Business: Meeting adjourned at 7:25. Respectfully submitted, Chuck Johnson CMI Secretary ************ Ethanol sales in 1933 Photo from the Nebraska State Historical Society. July 4: Delano July 4 th Parade: CMI had 13 entrants, and two princesses, in this parade, the oldest July 4 th parade in Minnesota. The parade concludes at the park which has a carnival and good food, AND it is all very affordable and has lots of families in attendance. Thank you once again to Bill and Carol Cook for planning another seamless event. July 8: Uponor Tour: Fran and CJ arranged this for us as CJ works at this facility in Apple Valley. About a dozen of us attended and were glad we did. Fran will give a more technical report! Upcoming Activities: July 19: Ultravan Ray McMonigal s: We ll meet to assess what we might do to assist in preserving/restoring his rare Corvair! July 21-25, 2014: National CORSA Convention: Tacoma, Washington at the new LeMay Automobile Museum. You better have completed your project and have it on the road by now!

5 VISITS A group of twelve CMIers were given the honor of a tour of Uponor s (formerly Wirsbo) PEX manufacturing plant in Apple Valley on July 8th. From Uponor s website: Uponor s core purpose is to partner closely with professionals to create better human environments. That means for more than 40 years, we have been seeking out innovative ways to ensure our PEX plumbing, radiant heating/cooling, hydronic distribution, preinsulated pipe and fire sprinkler systems offer the most consistent, reliable and high-performing solutions available to residential and commercial structures around the globe. This pic was taken by the tour guide. Thanks to C.J. Schmit for arranging the tour! Here's another visit to report. One day my son Peter was at my house and so was Gary Nelson and so was Hill Sweet and also my Hawai'ian son Paul. In Paul's youth he worked for Gary in his Garage/Barber shop. Mary took the picture. 7 Saturday July 19: Visit with Ray McMonigal to see his UltraVan. Turns out its number is 265. The number is on the door and also Ray has the book from the original owner that is also labeled #265. The team, shown in the illustrious photo, assessed what they thought Ray should work on first and then proceed, as time permits. The vehicle is in very restorable condition. #265 needs windshield work. Apparently Chevy Stepvan windshields almost fit and will fit with some cutting. Ray needs to fabricate a little bit of structure on the front end before getting the glass cut. The photos show Ray with the new glass and also the crew giving him valuable advice! Tom Quinn was really impressed with the manual and copies of the newsletter from the UltraVan club called Whales on Wheels. Ray was worried about the engine, so we poked around on that first. It was decided we could see no problem with the engine so we put some hardware back on and fired it up. Sounded good enough to be called a runner! The advice was for Ray to put the engine compartment back together and get all the engine wiring up to snuff so he could drive it around, a bit, before tackling the windshield project. We ll keep y all posted on this project as time goes by and maybe will ask for help in the months ahead, as we all would like to have a working UV in CMI.so would Ray. Fran Schmit (7)

8 From Seth Emerson, July 5, 2014 on Virtual Vairs: In case you thought the US Congress really did nothing at all! The U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 493 (S. Res. 493) designating July 11, 2014, as Collector Car Appreciation Day. The Resolution was requested by SEMA and Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) ( and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) ( councils. The date marks the fifth commemoration in what has become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. S. Res. 493 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus Co-Chairs Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), along with Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK). The Senators are strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and S. Res. 493 reaffirms their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars. The Caucus is an informal, non-partisan member organization that pays tribute to America s ever-growing love affair with the car and motorsports. We thank the U.S. Senate for its continued recognition of the collector car hobby as a valued American tradition and pastime, said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. With Australia and Canada joining the celebration, Collector Car Appreciation Day has now become an international recognition of the collector car industry and the millions of hobbyists it supports. A number of states and local governments have adopted similar commemorative declarations as well.
