2 Capturing the joy of driving in the all-new Z4 Roadster Since 1975, BMW has commissioned 16 artists to turn BMW racecars and production vehicles into their canvas. The resulting BMW Art Car Collection has graced museums worldwide. To introduce the all-new Z4 Roadster, BMW gave visionary artist Robin Rhode the freedom to render his impression of driving joy but this time using the Z4 not as a canvas, but as his paintbrush. Last November, a massive 100 x 200-foot canvas was laid down in a large studio in LA. Intricate paint dispensers were engineered to the Z4, so it could leave its fingerprint in the colors chosen to represent BMW s art heritage: red, yellow, blue, green and gray. Filmmaker Jake Scott used 40 HD cameras to catch every movement as the driver carefully followed Robin Rhode s choreographed route. A remote control allowed Rhode to regulate how much paint would be applied to each tire. After seven hours and 50 gallons of paint, it was finished.
