1 Introduction Sponge rubber profiles from EPDM, CR, NBR, NR in various colours Sponge rubber is a cellular, softly elastic material made of caoutchouc. During vulcanization the material inflates forming a partly open and partly closed cell structure as well as on its surface, a compact outer membrane. The specific weight of sponge rubber varies according to its quality from 0.4 to 0.8 gram per cm². Sponge rubber is produced among others from Natural Rubber (NR), Chloroprene Rubber (CR), Nitrile- Butadiene Rubber (NBR) or Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer (EPDM). The choice of an elastomer quality should be guided by its use and the requirements of the end product. Sponge rubber products are manufactured in many different processes either by vulcanization in moulds or by extrusion. Moulded parts or profiles of sponge rubber are light and resistant. Today, sponge rubber products or profiles combined with other rubber qualities or materials such as PVC, are used whenever sealing requirements are most important.
