A light source that contains the full spectrum of colours, e.g. sunlight, makes the colours of the illuminated items appear natural. Depending on use, artificial light should show objects in a light as natural as possible (as in normal daylight). The colour rendering properties of a light source, expressed in levels according to the general colour rendering index Ra, are the benchmark for this. A light source with Ra = 100 reproduces all colours perfectly. The lower the Ra value, the less natural the colours reproduced. 181 Appendix with electronic ballasts Advantages of electronic ballasts compared to conventional ballasts Electronic ballasts healthier, easier, more economic Flicker-free light without elektrosmog Fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts produce minimal magnetic field strengths. This avoids magnetic stray fields and thus elektrosmog. In addition, their higher operating frequencies make these luminaires completely noise-free, because there is no so-called 50Hz hum. The electronic ballast also ensures a gentle, flicker-free light. Electronic ballasts therefore play an important part in providing a fatigue-proof, healthier work environment. More convenience and control Electronic ballasts are more convenient. Before starting up, the fluorescent lamp filaments are briefly pre-heated, so that a sufficiently high firing pulse is available when the lamps are switched on. This in turn provides a flicker-free instant start. operated with electronic ballasts are appropriate for use in modern light control systems, making them ideal for modern office and business premises. Further, the electronic ballast switches off the lamp at the end of its life and thus eliminates irritating fluorescent flicker. Less lamp waste = better for the environment Fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts consume 25% 30% less energy than systems with conventional magnetic ballasts. At the same time the average life of the lamps is extended by more than 50%. Less mercury and other waste products are therefore generated. The total volume of lamp waste is reduced by about 30%. The amount of hazardous waste for disposal in industrial, commercial or public facilities, or for recycling, correspondingly decreases. Lower energy and replacement costs Electronic ballasts are more economical than magnetic ballasts in three different ways. First, the electronic ballast functions about 22% more efficiently than a conventional ballast. Second, the fluorescent lamp requires less energy, as it is not switched off at every zero-crossing of the AC voltage. Apart from an energy saving of 25% 30%, the life of the lamp increases by more than 50%. Therefore, third is a massive saving in the cost of lamp replacement. Thanks to the electronic ballast, the interval at which lamps are replaced in public lighting systems has been extended from 2 to 4 years. 181
