1 Case 402 : Narrative Case (A): 2003 Chevrolet Type: S10 LS, 3-door extended cab pickup, 4x2 Driver: 18-year-old female CDC: 12-FREE-5 SITUATION 1 2 On a cloudy day, case vehicle (A) was traveling east at an EDR-recorded speed of 43 mph (69 kph) on a two-way, two-lane, asphalt road, in a rural area. The road surface was dry, it was daylight, and the speed limit was 45 mph (72 kph). 3 As the driver of case vehicle (A) was completing a sharp curve to the left, 4 the vehicle departed the right edge of the road and the right-front corner of the 5 vehicle struck a 42-cm diameter wooden utility pole located 1.5-m south of the road edge. It was reported that the utility pole was sheared in half, but it was replaced prior to the scene inspection. The vehicle was towed from the scene due to damage. The police accident report (PAR) indicates B-level injuries for the driver of case vehicle (A) who was transported to a local hospital and was treated and released. GENERAL VEHICLE DAMAGE AND ESTIMATED CRASH SEVERITIES 6 The direct damage to the front of case vehicle (A) from the impact with the utility pole was primarily to the right corner of the front bumper. 7 The damage began at the right-front bumper corner and extended 37-cm to the left, resulting in 29-percent vehicle overlap (%VOL). The maximum crush was 99 cm and it occurred at the right-front bumper corner. Using the WinSMASH crash-reconstruction program and crush profiles measured for case vehicle (A), the following impact severity was estimated for the frontal impact with the utility pole. Calculated Velocity Change - kph (mph) Variable Total Longitudinal Latitudinal Case (A) EBS 41 (26) -41 (-26) 0 (0) Case vehicle (A) was equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR) that recorded a maximum longitudinal velocity change of mph at 110 ms into the event, but lost power at 120 ms. It also indicates that the vehicle was traveling at 43 mph five seconds before the crash, that the driver did not apply the brakes, that the driver seatbelt was buckled, the airbags were not suppressed, and that the vehicle slowed to approximately 40 mph at the time of impact. DESCRIPTION OF DAMAGE TO CASE VEHICLE (A) Exterior

2 12 In the front, the right and center sections of the bumper and grille were crushed rearward into the engine compartment and the right headlight assembly was broken. 13 The left section of the front bumper was pulled out, 14 the bumper was shifted to the right approximately 36 cm, and the left headlight assembly was dislodged but the headlamp glass was not broken. 15 The right and center sections of the hood were crushed rearward and pushed up, and the left side of the hood was pulled to the right and up. The damaged hood latch was jammed, both hood hinges were deformed but not separated, and the rear edge of the hood was elevated and it had contacted and cracked the lower section of the windshield. Cracks radiated across the entire windshield and there 20 was a hole in the plastic interlayer at the lower-left corner from wood pieces embedded in the glass from the sheared-off utility pole. 21 On the right side, the fender was crumpled, pulled out, and pushed to the rear against the right-front tire, causing a cut in the tire. 22 The right-front wheel was pushed rearward into the lower section of the right A-pillar, resulting in a 54-cm reduction in the right wheelbase. 23 The upper portion of the right A- pillar was pushed rearward into a vertical orientation, causing remote buckling of the right and center sections of the roof. The lower portion of the right A-pillar and the upper and lower portions of the right B-pillar were also deformed. 21 The right-front door and window frame were crushed and bowed out, the door-window glass was disintegrated, and the door was jammed closed. The side panel behind the right-front door was buckled but the panel glass was not broken. 24 The truck bed was rotated up and the forward portion of the truck bed was pushed into the rear of the cab, causing damage to the lower section of the right C-pillar. 25 There was no damage to the right-rear wheel. 26 On the left side, the fender was deformed and displaced to the right There was no damage to the left A- or C-pillars, both left-side doors were operable and the left-side glazing was intact There was no damage to the left-side wheels and there was no change in the left wheelbase. 29 The truck bed was pushed up on the left side but it had not moved forward against the C-pillar In the rear, deformation to the truck bed allowed some separation at the rear tailgate, and the door was jammed. Interior 34 This vehicle was equipped with steering-wheel and dash-mounted frontal-impact airbags, which deployed during the frontal impact. 35 There was no damage to the steering-wheel airbag, 36 but there was makeup on the center portion of the airbag fabric. 37 In the driver area, there was no damage to the roof, to the windshield header, to the left A-pillar, or to the sunvisor. 38 The left section of the windshield was cracked due to exterior damage. 39 There was no damage to the steering-wheel assembly but the steering column was rotated down and to the left The plastic that covers the instrument cluster was cracked 44 and the upper and mid sections of the instrument panel were displaced to the rear. There were scuffmarks on the 45 center and 46 right sections of the knee bolster and the bolster was displaced to the rear. 47 The driver section of the floor was displaced up, the toepan was displaced to the rear, and the 48 accelerator pedal was bent to the left. 49 Buckling of the floor caused the driver seat to rotate to the right and the manual seat adjuster was jammed. 50 There was no damage to the interior panel of the driver door. 51 In the center-front area, the roof and roof headliner were buckled. 52 There was a series of cracks in the windshield that radiated from the lower section of the windshield but there was no damage to the center rearview mirror. 53 The vertical console was displaced to the rear and the ashtray was dislodged from its attachments.

3 54 In the right-front seating area, the roof and headliner were buckled and 55 there was a series of cracks in the windshield. 56 The upper portion of the right A-pillar and instrument panel/glove box were displaced to the rear and the glove-compartment door would not close. 57 There was no damage to the dash-mounted frontal-impact airbag or to 58 the airbag cover. 59 The toepan was displaced to the rear, the floor was buckled up, 60 the seat was rotated to the right, and the manual seat adjustor was jammed. 61 The interior panel of the right-front door was damaged and displaced laterally to the left, but the top section was bowed out, 62 most of the door hardware, trim, and the door armrest were damaged, the window frame was severely bent, and the door window glass was shattered The following intrusions were noted and measured: Location Component Distance (cm) Direction toepan 17 to rear driver floor 13 up instrument panel 5 to rear center front instrument panel 24 to rear toepan 55 to rear right front instrument panel 39 to rear door 31 to left A-pillar 8 to rear OCCUPANT KINEMATICS AND INJURIES 66 The 155-cm, 49-kg (5-ft 1-in, 108-lb) 18-year-old female driver was using the available three-point belt, 73 and the steering-wheel airbag deployed during the frontal impact with the utility pole. Belt use at the time of the crash is indicated by belt-loading marks on the D-ring and continuous loop, and the fact that the belt load limiter was pulled out. During the frontal impact, the driver moved forward into the belt restraints and airbag. She sustained contusions over the left shoulder, across the chest, and across the abdomen from loading by shoulder and lap belts. She sustained an abrasion to the palmar aspect of the right forearm, probably from contact by the deploying airbag. 74 She sustained a contusion to the dorsal aspect of the right forearm, possibly from contact with the plastic cover over the instrument-panel cluster. She also sustained a contusion to the dorsal aspect of the left forearm from an unknown source. 75 She sustained contusions to the proximal anterior aspects of both thighs, probably from contact with the steering-wheel rim. 76 She sustained contusions to both knees from knee contact with the knee bolster, as evidenced by scuffmarks on the bolster cover. The following table and attached drawing 79 summarize the injuries for the restrained driver. Occupant: Driver Age: 18 years Gender: Female Restraints: 3-point belt, steering-wheel airbag Stature: 155 cm (5 ft, 1 in) Mass: 49 kg (108 lb)
