TRACK OPERATION ALIGNMENT MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION Manufactured At: Unverferth Manufacturing Co., Inc Temple Ave. Shell Rock, IA PH: Fax: Part #265941
INDEX SECTION I...Operating Procedures Daily Operation SECTION II...Track Alignment SECTION III...Tire Alignment SECTION IV...Troubleshooting SECTION V...Track Maintenance SECTION VI...Track Lubrication 2
SECTION I OPERATING PROCEDURES Make turns at least three cart lengths wide to prevent stress or damage to track system. Operate loaded cart 8 mph and below. Operate track cart avoiding sidehills or steep inclines. Whenever possible, choose level terrain during operation. Whenever possible, operate in areas free of large or excessive rocks or other obstacles. Operate track system under the recommended maintenance and lubrication schedule. This will ensure maximum service life of the track system. DAILY OPERATING CHECKLIST Tire pressure must be at 85 psi, inflated evenly in pairs. (Fluctuations in tire pressure will cause tire deflection, therefore affecting belt alignment and performance.) The track system must have 1/8" toe-in. In other words, the front of the undercarriage must be 1/8" narrower than the rear. Measure from the front and rear slider plates when checking toe-in. Check with the grain cart loaded. Pullback links must be tight (300 Ft. Lbs.). Tighten front and rear pullbacks alternately to achieve 1/8" toe-in. Be sure to retract (shorten) pullbacks, not extend them. Wheel nuts torqued to 400 Ft. Lbs. Check for heat on sidewalls of tires and rubber centering lugs of belts. Tow empty cart at 20 mph for one mile. After stopping, monitor alignment by feeling each side of belt centering lugs for heat. There should be no heat or abrasion on tires or centering lugs. NOTE: This check list allows the operator to monitor key areas of the track system for optimum performance. 3
SECTION II TRACK ALIGNMENT Prior to each season, and after every 10 hours of usage, perform the following: Check tire pressure for 85 psi. (Fluctuations in tire pressure will cause tire deflection, therefore affecting belt performance.) Check for 1/8" toe-in on track system. Maintain 400 Lbs. torque on wheel nuts. Check to be sure pullback links are tight (see Fig. 2). Check track alignment by roading cart for one mile at tractor speed, then checking for heat on centering lugs and tires. The following maintenance criteria are very important for proper track operation. Use these recommendations as a guidline for proper track adjustment. A. Toe-In Tracks must be relatively parallel to each other and perpendicular to the axle with 1/8" toe-in. Check the toe-in by measuring across from the front inside slider plates, then the rear inside slider plates. Do not measure from the rubber belts (Fig. 1). Fig
Adjustment of track toe-in can be accomplished as follows: 1. Jack up axle slightly to remove some of the weight. Do not lift track system off the ground. Support with adequate blocking. 2. Remove pullback locks. Tighten pullback links accordingly in order to gain 1/8" toe-in. Be sure adjusting screw in pullback link is being tighened, not loosened. Pullback links must be torqued to 300 Ft. Lbs. (Fig. 2). Tighten pullback links alternately, front and rear in order to achieve torque setting and 1/8" toe-in. Fig Pullback locks can then be reinstalled with fasteners (Fig. 2). B. Track Alignment Guidelines 1. All tires must have 85 PSI (Fig. 3). 2. All wheel nuts (3/4-16 UNC) must be tightened to 400 Ft. Lbs. torque (Fig. 3). 3. Both tire diameters (rolling circumference) on any one spindle must be equal (less than 1/4" variation). Both tires on each spindle must be the same size and brand for proper track performance. Always replace tires as a set on a spindle if necessary (Fig. 3). Fig
4. Track sag should be approximately 1/2" in center when properly adjusted (Fig. 4). 5. Rubber centering lugs must run centered between tires to prevent excessive tire wear or abrasion on tire sidewalls (Fig. 5). Fig Fig
SECTION III TIRE ALIGNMENT Tracks have been factory adjusted. Factory alignment index marks located on the slider plates provide measuring baselines for proper adjustment (Fig. 6). Normal usage may require periodic adjustment to track system. Monitoring for proper tire alignment involves checking for heat or abrasion on sides of the tire sidewalls or rubber centering lugs. NOTE: Before making adjustments to slider plates, be sure track system is set at 1/8" toein with the cart loaded. Once toe-in is set, then check for heat on centering lugs and tires. 1. Tire positon can be changed by loosening the four clamp bolts on the slide plates. 2. Remove tension bolt thread cover in order to turn tension bolt. 3. Adjust slider plates according to tire sidewall / centering lug heat. 4. Tighten clamp bolts on slide plates before moving the machine. 5. Inspect rubber centering lugs and tires after roading empty cart in a straight line for one mile. Centering lugs should run centered between tires with no sidewall heat. IMPORTANT: During adjustment, slider plates need to be adjusted equally on the appropriate side where side wall heat exists. Only turn tension bolts in 1/4-turn increments at a time, then re-check alignment. CAUTION! DO NOT place hands near tire / belt contact area during track operation. Fig
SECTION IV TROUBLESHOOTING Before making adjustments to the track system, use the "Daily Operating Check List" as a guideline for proper set-up. SYMPTOM Centering lugs are running on outside dual(s) Centering lugs are running on inside dual(s) Centering lugs are not running consistent Tire sidewalls / centering lugs are scuffed REMEDY Extend both outer slide plates equally Retract both outer slide plates equally Check for 1/8" toe-in Check for 85 psi tire pressure Check for 1/2" track sag Take wide turns Check for 1/8" toe-in, be sure pullbacks are tight Monitor for sidewall heat, adjust slide plates. SECTION V TRACK MAINTENANCE A. Tire Removal 1. Jack up axle and support with adequate blocking (Fig. 7). 2. Disconnect pull-back from frame weldment and swing toward axle. Fig
3. Mark position of all slider plates on this track to keep adjustment when re-assembled (Fig. 7). 4. Loosen eight slider plate capscrews (both sides) on opposite end from the tire being changed (Fig. 7). 5. Remove adjusting bolts (both sides) on opposite end from tire being changed, insert 180 o in brackets, and turn in to loosen track. Fig Remove slider plate on tire to be removed (Fig. 8). 7. With fork lift, raise track at point next to tire (shown by arrow). 8. Remove wheel nuts and remove tire from spindle. Fig B. Tire Installation. 1. Install tire in opposite sequence. 2. Tighten 3/4-16 UNC wheel nuts to 400 Ft. Lbs. 3. Move adjusting bolts and covers back to original position and tighten track. 4. Refer to "Tire Alignment" to check installation. Use specified tire that matches original size and profile. The pairs must have matching rolling circumferences and may need to be replaced as pairs. CAUTION! After tire replacement, be sure to road cart to check alignment. 9
TRACK MAINTENANCE Bogie-Wheel Removal 1. Park cart on a hard, level and uniform surface. 2. Jack up axle and support with adequate blocking (Fig. 10). 3. Mark position of slider plates to keep adjustment when reassembled. 4. Loosen sixteen bolts on all four slider plates. 5. Remove adjusting bolts and covers, insert 180 o in brackets, and turn in to loosen track (Fig. 11). 6. Remove bogie retainers and fasteners. 7. Remove two bogie assemblies. 8. Loosen nut & setscrew, and remove bogie spindle collars from both ends of each spindle (Fig. 12). 9. Remove snap rings, seals, bearing cones, and bearing cups. 10. Remove hub and wheel assembly. Clean bearing cavities on both wheels if necessary. Fig Fig
Fig Bogie Wheel Installation 1. Repack hub (see "Track Lubrication"). Install hub and wheel assembly on spindle. 2. Install bearing cups and bearing cones. Pack bearings with EP-2 grease. 3. Install seals and snap rings. 4. Install collars, setscrews and nuts. 5. Place bogie spindle assembly in frame and install retainers and fasteners. 6. Remove four adjusting bolts, and insert 180 o in brackets (original position) and turn in to tighten track. Tighten slider plates equally until aligned with marks made before disassembly. Replace covers on adjusting bolts. 7 Tighten sixteen bolts on all four slider plates. 8. If track belts are aligned properly during operation, rubber guide lugs will be centered between dual tires. Check track and tires for wear and abrasion. If conditions indicate that alignment is needed, follow the instructions in Track Manual # or Operator's Manual. 11
