Translation of page 3 Editorial Toy fair whisperings For me, the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg has three distinctive emotional aspects. About two months before the fair, the unpleasing process of organizing the trip brings up the question of why do I want to do this to myself again, when only a couple of days before the fair, I can read all the news about it on the Internet? However, when I step through the doors of the halls were the fair is held, my enjoyment is great as I once again meet all the people with whom, during the remainder of the year, I exchange only an occasional . When I am sitting in the train on my way back home, starting to write my fair report, I know that it was imperative to have been at the fair yet again. This is because the most important bits of news, besides the new models of course, is gleaned only from direct conversation, or from that given out with baited breath as strictly between us and to be kept off the record. This year Norscot was the dominant topic of discussion in hall seven. However, I do not want to repeat here what transpired and has already been printed in several places over the last weeks. Literally, only a few minutes from the print deadline, Klaas de Vries from Mahler & Partner (Norscot Europa) explained to me that the blocked die cast moulds have been released. After the scheduled move to a new production site in China, and the training of the new production staff, production will start again. It probably will take months until the promised new models will appear. Collectors will have to practice a bit more patience. Despite this drawback, friends of the Caterpillar brand do not have to despair: it is a special privilege to introduce the new Cat 385C and 390D models from CCM, an exclusive report for BAGGERMO- DELLE. I am convinced that these new models with sweeten the waiting time for now. I would like to wish all reader a lot of fun when reading the current issue, Daniel Wietlisbach BAGGERMODELLE online:

Translation of pages 6 7 New on the market NZG 1:50 scale Immediately after the Nuremburg toy fair, NZG delivers the first new items. As well as the new Terex AC200-1 was a group of colorful excavators from the Netherlands: The Volvo EC460C L in the van Dalen and Loock color schemes, and the Hitachi ZX1000K-3 with an 18m long boom in the van Vliet and van Groningen liveries. Also ready to deliver are all three versions of the very finely detailed Dynapac: the SD2500 CS and SD2550 CS with tracks and the SD2500 WS as a wheeled version. The new Actros appears in full chrome paint as tractor unit with GigaSpace and StreamSpace cabin versions. The concrete mixer truck in the Fischer Kies, Staffelbach version is painted blue and finished with an intricately printed decal. Herpa 1:87 scale The new Mercedes Actros Giga 2011 is now available as a single tractor unit and combined with a semi-lowbed trailer in red. To upgrade the heavy load trucks from MAN and Mercedes, a set of antiskid fenders is available. It is possible to adapt lowboy trailers for the transport of wind turbine parts using the new pipe adaptor kit. Finally, for the builders of dioramas, there is a set with Delta Bloc highway lane dividers. Included in the set is a grappling hook for Herpa loading cranes. GMTS 1: 50 scale The series of Golden Oldies gets a wonderful addition with the Büssing Commodore FK3 6x6 dump truck. As one of the first front axle driven trucks, it was not very popular with drivers; they preferred the large engine hood found on most trucks of the time as it gave drivers a greater feeling of safety. However, the model of an out of the ordinary prototype, turned out very nicely. It has the usual high Collector s guide So that you do not miss any of the new model announcements, the latest releases are listed here in short form. 5 Translation of pages 8 11 Timo Bachhuber collects 1:87 scale models A Perfectionist by Daniel Wietlisbach Timo Bachhuber was born at about the same time that Kibri launched its line of construction machine models in 1:87 scale. His father was a passionate model builder, specializing in formula 1 racing cars in 1:12 scale. As a side interest, he collected cars in the same scale from Wiking and Herpa. It is clear that Timo Bachhuber inherited his passion for model building from his father. As far back as the collector can remember his passion has always been for construction machines. The most exciting thing for him as a small tyke was to spend time at construction sites watching the machines at work. At home, the very few construction machine toys available at the time had the place of honour on the nursery toy shelf. He has clear memories of owning two special twowheeled loaders, the Zettelmeyer Europ L 2000 loader from Siku and a Michigan L320 from Joal. At the age of 10, inspired by his father, he discovered the 1:87 scale models from Wiking. Available at the time were a Liebherr 531 wheeled loader and an O&K Hydraulic excavator that had thick rubber tracks and was rather Spartan in its detailing. These models were designed for model railroad layouts. They did not inspire the collectors interested in construction machines. Timo Bachhuber is 32 years old; this makes him the youngest collector we have had the pleasure to introduce. Some of his scratch built models leave even older hands breathless What a discovery it was when the boy collector spied the Kibri Liebherr R974 already assembled in a shop window in Nuremberg. The model was speedily elevated to the top of his Christmas wish list. That very year it was found under the Christmas tree. This was the first kit that 12-year-old Timo Bachhuber assembled, and it would not be the last. Over the years, he assembled all of the Kibri models with prototypes from Atlas, Kaelble, Liebherr, Faun and Komatsu. Finally, his main interest became the modern machines. The favourites were machines used for the movement and handling of soil. Due to the unavailability of many newer construction machines, a few truck models joined the evergrowing collection. Timo financed his acquisitions with his allowance. Gifts on birthdays and Christmases augmented his collection. Improved models He was a perfectionist even then. This led to upgrades on many of his models. At first, only the tracks were painted to look more realistic. Soon the entire model was painted, weathered and finally upgraded with tiny hand rails made from brass wire. To present his models favourably in prototypical surroundings he built his first dioramas. He created dioramas of quarries from Styrofoam and plaster of Paris enhanced by the addition of real dirt and stones that he collected on his walks. The creative urge was almost limitless. If a new idea appeared during the construction of a diorama, he would start a completely new one. His parents were, when Timo Bachhuber thinks back, not enthused about the ever-increasing number of dioramas and the construction mess connected to them. Later on, he tried his hand at assembling the more challenging kits from D+K Modelbau. The parts for these kits are resin and pewter castings. Kits for Cat D11N, Cat 789, Wabco 170C (dump truck) and a Demag H 485 were built. The relatively simple detailing on them required a substantial amount of additional work. However, the reward for the builder was that he 5

Translation of pages 8 11 now had some unique models in his collection. However, that was not enough for him. He used the parts in the kit for the H 485 S to make a Liebherr R996, a completely scratch built effort. Unfortunately, most of these early models were given away, since they no longer passed scrutiny as his modeling skills increased. During his apprenticeship, he discovered a classified ad for the model of the Cat 922G from CCM. Together with the Cat 777D this was the last model in a small series of 12 models from the market leader. The sensational quality inspired him to such a degree that he saved up the price of the model from his rather limited apprenticeship salary. (It was much later when he was able to add the matching 777D to his collection.) From then on, he watched the offerings from CCM very closely. Therefore, he was able to add the following models to his collection: the Cat 797 large dump truck, 583R pipe layer, D11R CD and 994D. They made their way into to his display cabinets over a few years. Only because he had finished his apprenticeship, and was still living at home, was it possible to finance these models. A discovery destined to make a great impact in his collection was the discovery Bachhuber made when he was visiting a dealer s shop. There he found a brown Terex Unit Rig MT4400 large skip dump truck made by OHS. This maker s resin and pewter models released in 1:50 scale were not free of controversy. However, the pure brass models in 1:87 scale from the same maker can be counted among the best ever made. Legendary, and today very much sought after, is the The Collector Timo Bachhuber, 32, apprenticed as a gardener and works for a large construction supply company. He features his new model construction efforts regularly on his home page: To expand his horizon and for relaxation he builds models from other market segments. Now he is working on a container ship from Revell in 1:700 scale. He is also a passionate cyclist and loves to play billiards. He is single and lives in Schwabach. model of the O&K RH400. This model can be admired in Timo s collection in the red Syncrude color scheme as well as in the white Electro version as RH400-E. Both are exact scale models and are prototypically correct. Overall, OHS released six different versions in a very small and limited series. These models were followed by models from Classic Mint for example, the world s largest bulldozer, the Komatsu PC450LC. The European version appeared only due to an initiative by the very involved dealer shop, Spiel + Modellkist l. Not at least among the models in his collection is the P&H 4100XPC; the larger 1:50 model of this machine was released a few years after the smaller scale one. A shiny green Terex Titan by EMD is the only historical machine in his collection, but it was a real must have machine for the collector of heavy-duty construction machines. His Masterpiece The collector would not be able to call himself a model maker if he did not build his own models from scratch or kit bashed existing kits into new models in addition to collecting finished models. This is how the Liebherr excavators came into being. By using kits from Kibri and models from Herpa, Timo built the following models: R964B, 974B, 984C and R922. None of these models has to take second place behind the brass models. The absolute masterpiece, however, is the Liebherr T282B. The world s largest dump truck was on show for the first time at the 2004 Bauma. Visitors to the show, including Timo Bachhuber, were able to get a close-up look at the giant. Timo used the opportunity to take hundreds of pictures, even from below the unit. Construction started a little bit later and consumed two years of modeling time. The unique model is comprised of 1345 individual parts; the highly detailed engine can be detached from the model and admired separately. The Liebherr T282B is, without a doubt, the masterpiece of a perfectionist. 6

Translation of pages Cat 385C L, 385C FS and 390D L Variations on an excavator Not considering the O&K/ Bucyrus excavators from Caterpillar, the new 390D with its operating weight of 90.4 t is the largest hydraulic excavator in the Caterpillar sales line up by Urs Peyer As successors to the 385C, the 390D and its companion, the 374D were officially introduced to the trade in a Belgian quarry in November of However, the 385C remains in the line-up for us as a front shovel excavator model. Since machines of this size are generally used only in German quarry operations, the number of machines sold is small. Therefore, Caterpillar decided not to re-design the FS version (Front shovel). However, eventually the new engines, conforming to the emission control protocol IIIB, with particle filter, will be required and will have to be used. It remains to be seen if the model designation will change when this occurs. The same question can be asked about the 390D; this machine still has one engine that is equipped with IIIA emission control features. Maybe a 390E or a 395E will soon leave the production line in Belgium. 385C L Depending on the size of the boom chosen and the width of the track base plate, the 385C L brings an operating weight between 83.9 t and 87.7 t to the scales. The propulsion system for this machine is a C15 Acert diesel engine with a displacement of 18.1 litres that produces 390 kw/ 530 hp. For the under carriage, track base plates with widths of 650, 750 or 900 mm are available. The under carriage can be mechanically reduced by up to 760 mm. The working width of the machine has a track width of 3,510 mm and maximum track support length of 5,120 mm (L = long under carriage ) Depending on the field of application for the 385C, the owner has a choice between the 7.25 m mass excavation boom (ME) or the 8.4 m standard boom and the 10.0 m extended reach boom. If the requirement is to maximise the loading capability, then the combination of the ME boom of the smallest size (2,920 mm) with the largest capacity shovel (5.2 m 3 ) is ideal. If the goal is to have the greatest possible reach, then the long boom (5.5 m) and an arm equipped with a small shovel, capacity of 2.0 m 3, is called for. This gives a reach of m and an excavation depth of m total. For de-construction purposes, Caterpillar is offering three different outrigger versions with heights of 30, 36 or 40 m. The short version, for example, is at work in Switzerland with the firm of Eberhard Bau AG. It can be operated with an attachment that weighs a maximum of 5t. The 385C L UHD, on the other hand, is capable of hoisting just about half of its own weight to the height of 7

Translation of pages m and has an operating weight of 98.7 t. 385C FS For the mining industry, Caterpillar builds the 385C FS with an operating weight of 90.6 t. The hinged loose rock shovel has a capacity of 5.7 or 6.5 m 3, depending on the optional wear parts. There are several of these machines in use in Germany. They usual work in combination with the 775F rigid frame dumpers that have a loading capacity of 63 t. 390D L As with most updates on large construction machines, the new 390D L is heavier than its predecessor is. Depending on the attachment options, the new operating weight is between 86.2 t and 92.4 t. The new version has an improved hydraulic system. The engineers were able to increase the pressure in the system and mounted a heavy counter weight (12.4 t). This achieves higher breakout forces, shorter work cycle times and higher loading capacities in the quarries. The DEM100, a demolition excavator based on the 390D L is not yet available. 8

Translation of pages Cat 385C and 390D from CCM in 1:48 scale Versatile excavator Great was the joy of collectors upon the announcement of the models of the CAT 385C and 390D. Even greater were the expectations of the producer, CCM by Daniel Wietlisbach The delivery of all three versions coincides with this issue of our magazine. CCM was very kind in loaning us production samples for this article. The three models in question are not three differently painted and finely detailed models but are three different excavator models with different equipment options. The 385C L has the standard boom and dipper, the 385C FS has a front shovel bucket and the 390D LME has an oversized backhoe bucket for mass material excavation. A check of the models against prototype measurements shows no discrepancies. Lower carriage The convincingly modelled, functional chassis for both backhoe versions of the excavator is identical and looks true to the original. The 900 mm wide metal track segments, 51 on the original, are twinned and are transposed exactly onto the model. The three carrying wheels and the nine guide wheels are present on the model and all work. Thanks to the very softly sprung suspension on the guide wheels, the model moves light footedly and very smoothly. To achieve maximum functionality, the running gears are 2mm longer then the prototype. The propulsion wheel is engraved with all details. The simple protective skirt for the running wheels is modelled as are the separately applied steps. A separate chassis had to be made for the face shovel version of the excavator as it has only eight running wheels. Most of the original machines have a full covering protective skirt over the running wheels; however, there are some exceptions, one being the FS 385C At a glance + Detailing at true to scale + Functionality + Great variety of optional equipment shown Hand rails made partly from plastic that was equipped with only the simple skirt, as shown on this model. The twin standard track links have a scale width of 650 mm as on the original and again, are correct in number. Upper carriage The upper carriage housing is identical on all three models. The convincing air intake grills are deep, precise engravings. Many handrails and grips, made mostly from wire, further enhance the look of the upper part of the models however, the plastic mountings are a bit oversized. It is possible to look at the fine mock up of the C18 Acert engines through the finely etched mesh cover. There are three service box lids that allow a look at the hydraulic pump and air filters. The bank of hydraulic valves is centrally placed. Underneath are two housings for the swivel motors. As on the originals, the counterweights on the 390D and 385C are different. All three models share the same operator s cabin; however, that on 9

Translation of pages the 385C FS is elevated. All windows are set in and flush with the outside of the cabin. The rubber mouldings are painted on in a flat black colour. The sky light on the cabins is protected with a plastic grille; on the FS version there is an additional grille for the front window. The absolute detail highlight on the cabin is the doors that close so exactly that a special tool, included, is needed to open them. The first class, multi-coloured interior has a simulated steering control monitor on a colour-printed label. Spotlights, rear view mirrors and window wipers complete the details of the cabins. Equipment The difference between the normal version and the mass excavation version can be observed nicely. The latter, paired with the 6m3 scoop, gives the 390 LME a really chunky look. The boom and the jib are extremely well detailed and all hydraulic lines down to the control valves on the cylinders are separately applied parts. True to the prototype, the cylinders have visible bolt heads and chromed piston rods. It is nice to note that there are no distracting bolts showing. However, it gets better; the bolts used to attach the bucket scoops are attached with bolts that are the same size and shape as on the original. Finally, the beautifully engraved shovels have the appropriate teeth and wear and tear parts. The 3.7 m long jib on the 385C L is actually, according to the prospectus, meant only for the 390D. Equally excellent in all details is the optional FS equipment; this must have been a challenge for the model engineering team. On the under side of the jib and boom there is a jumble of hydraulic lines, just like on the original. Only on the upper part of the boom is there a missing cross connection leading to the outer lifting cylinders. By the way, the piston rods on the four cylinders have protective sheet metal coverings that run in and out on tracks. The paint job and lettering are, as always from CCM, first class. It does not take a prophet to forecast longlasting success for these models. 10

Translation of page 17 Tinplate Faun dump truck from GAMA by Robert Bretscher Strictly speaking, this model does not fit into the tinplate period because only the chassis is made from solid steel. For the upper carriage and the very nice dumping bin with cross stiffeners, GAMA used the trendy plastic casting, popular during the 60s and 70s. Despite the otherwise robust construction, the rather brittle plastic was prone to cracks and chipping especially in the bin part, due to rough treatment in the sand box and particularly with the loading of large stones. The huge dump truck is very pleasing to look at and has a great design. It is equipped with many details, remarkable for the time. The partially glassed in operator s cabin is equipped with a mounted ladder, steering wheel and cabin This large Faun dump truck by GAMA was offered as the number 339. Today it is an especially rare model interior. The sliding door operates prototypically. The two air filters on the side of the model and the huge tires give it an authentic look. The headlights and warning beacons of colored plastic material are protected behind the front steel bumpers. The engineering of the fully functional dumping mechanism is very impressive. A hand-operated lever releases a strong spring that dumps the bin out. The same spring is wound up again when the bin is lowered and a hook clicks into place to keep the bin secured. The front oscillating axles are a further refinement to the model. The model is steered by a steering rod that is located just above the bumpers in the front. The whole under carriage is very sturdy and is equipped with double rear tires that sit on stainless steel axles, as do the single front tires. This strong construction made it impossible to bend the axles even when used in rough play. To summarize, a super toy for its time in history. 11

Translation of pages Gottwald AMK 1000 from YCC in 1:50 scale The Legend is alive! by Carsten Bengs The crane rolls on nine axles, all of them sprung and, with the exception of one, are steerable. The boom trailer truck has the same configuration. The very fine mechanical solution for the axles deserves mention. Even the logo of the tire maker, Michelin, is visible on the scale tires. The many superstructures and the massive exhaust stack have safety tread surfaces, as on the prototype. Small Allen screws must be undone to detach both trucks from the crane super structure. This is an interesting feature, one rarely used in real life. (Extra replacement screws are included with the model). The crane is anchored with massive telescoping supports attached to the crane from below with Allen screw that are hidden from view. Rather massive bolts are used for this but they secure the unit so that it can stand safely. Little hydraulic lines complete the details. The Low-Line drivers cabins, typical for these units, are easily recognized. The doors open wide making it easier to gaze inside both cabins. The hinges are noticeably compact. Lettering and registration plates are modeled, as are window wipers, lights, rear view and other mirrors and radiator grille; all these are made from photo etchings. For a very long time, the legendary Gottwald AMK 1000 was one of the world s largest telescoping cranes. Twenty-seven years after its conception YCC took a gamble and now presents this ambitious model Upper carriage and boom The first thing observed when looking at the model is the superb detailing. The hoses and pipes run along the outrigger foot and can be connected to the boom. On the prototype, these lines would handle the telescoping motion. A small magnet secures the lines in their holders which is a nice detail. The massive outrigger is attached to the bottom plate with some stout bolts that are operated with a pivoting pin to secure the boom. YCC has the possibility here to optimize the model further, as one of the bolts was lying loose in the bottom of the box. A little drop of ACC At a glance + Choice of prototype + Detailing Winch is stiff and hard to turn Loose parts, hard to use bolts fixed the problem in no time. The same bolts are used to attach the seven parts of the counter weight ballast. The very little bolts with little handles that are used to attach parts are remarkable. However, in order to attach them I had to drill out the openings. The technique used in the construction of the telescoping boom is very interesting. It features a very smooth step less adjustment. The outrigger can be fixed at any position using the Allen key that is included. The Allen screws are hidden in the erecting cylinder. It would be nice to see this system used in other crane models. The outrigger boom has the distinctive HPC profile designed by Gottwald. This allows the machine to reach high carrying and lifting thresholds. The AK 1000 introduced as an 800 tonner was upgraded later on. All the dollies that guide the lifting cables are very nice. They run freely without making the cable 12

Translation of pages drag on the boom. The lowest dolly wheel can be folded downwards out of the way while in transport mode. All telescoping sections of the outrigger can be secured with the small bolts and are very stable. On the pulley head, there is a noticeable detail: the rear drumhead cable leads over a hydraulic cylinder that brings the pulley head to working position. The wind gauge detail is very nice. The cables for the hooks run on metal dolly wheels and operate very smoothly. The drum cables are stiff, and need a drop of oil when they are run up for the first time. As a nice touch, there are three different block hooks included with the model: one 11 roll for a lifting capacity up to 350t, a five roll for 150t capacity and a small one roll. All hook blocks come with swivelling hooks and securing clips. On the prototype, the clips prevent the slipping of the lifting cables. The driver s cabin tilts and stows away behind the ballast receptacle when being transported. The little door opens easily. Window wipers and simulated lights round off the detailing of the cabin. There is even a tiny but typical, white triangular Gottwald- Düsseldorf sign mounted on the opposite wall of the cabin. Overall, it can be said that YCC has produced a fantastic and impressive model of this, the most legendary crane in the world. Even though there is still some room for improvement on some points, the AMK 1000 is a milestone in model making. This is especially true if one considers that this model was made without any commission from the industry. 13

Translation of page 25 Remo s old Iron Here you can challenge your know-how. Recognize the machine and win a model! Recognized? Then send us the exact manufacturer s name and the model number on a post card by mail. We also accept submissions (contact information is on page 42). The contest ends 15th April Should there be more correct answers than prizes a draw will be held to determine the winner. This time the three prizes are the Liebherr A 900C ZW Litronic from NZG, the MAN TGS 8x4 with a Meiller dumping bin in orange from NZG and the Scania 143M 4x2 tractor unit from WSI. by Remo Stoll Unfortunately, vandals got to it before the photographer. Lamps and windows had already been smashed which is a shame, because the machine still looks pretty good. This wheeled loader was made in two, almost identical versions with differing type designations. A small hint: we are looking for the older model variant. Solution from BAGGERMODELLE It was quite a challenge to identify the Weserhütte W 100 dragline excavator in the last contest. However, there were more correct entries than prizes, so a draw was held. The winners are: Carsten Land who won the Goldhofer low boy trailer and MAN TGX XXL Bohnet from Conrad, Uwe Hensler from Berlin (D) who won the Liebherr A924 Litronic Wurzel Bau from NZG and Bernhard Dorner from Neuhaus (D) who won the Ginaf 10x4 dumper model from WSI. We congratulate all the winners! 14

Translation of pages News from the Nuremberg Toy Show 2012 An interesting year! After a very difficult year for some, most producers now look with cautious optimism toward the future by Daniel Wietlisbach and Carsten Bengs (cranes) There where few new construction machine models to be found at the last toy fair however, the year ended better then expected. This year, some very interesting new models were on display. Additionally, some makers let it be known that more new items would be introduced at the Intermat Fair in Paris in the middle of April. This means that collectors can look forward to a variety of new items throughout the year. Busch 1:87 The narrow gauge underground mining railroad from last year has grown and is now expanding to include a palette of light industrial railway models. As well as trains, track and switches, there is a bridge system and a loading ramp. In addition, three buildings depicting a brick works are offered. Matching the light industrial rail theme is a turf works with a couple of out buildings. A good match for both is the resurrected model of the Fuchs 301 excavator as a weathered, ready to run model; unfortunately, it has an unsuitable grapple hook. Kibri also makes the mobile excavator from Weimar, with a smaller grappler hook. Bymo 1:50 With the manufacturing of the Komatsu PC 8000 taking the full capacity of the factory in Bosnia, the Michigan 475B will be manufactured in China; a series of 500 units is expected to be ready by this summer. The very promising sample will undergo some modification in the areas of exhaust stacks and dumping cylinders. An upgrading kit with new metal tracks and guide wheels will be offered for the Demag H485 S from NZG (375); it will be easy to switch to the new tracks and wheels. Unfortunately, the PC 8000, shown loading a dump truck, is only available as a print. The high quality prints in A3 to A0 formats may be ordered directly. Conrad 1:50 Conrad offers new models in the L-Version. The L behind the order number signifies a lighter and slightly simpler version. Omitting the detailed engine, tilting cabin, the photo-etched exhaust cage and including a simplified chassis without oscillating axles makes it possible to lower the cost of these models. This was a request made by industrial customers. Two new models fall into the simplified category: The MAN TGS with a Putzmeister M42-5RZ concrete pump attachment and the Mercedes Actros four-axle truck with Liebherr HTM 904 concrete drum. The Terex Demag AC100/4L was shown with a new, unique cabin design. The AC1000 was also shown, but the model will only be available once the prototype has been delivered. A very interesting new version is the Palfinger PK with a fly jib! Now a list of more new items from the Kalchreuthers: Link- Belt 800 X2, MAN TGX 6x4 with flat deck, mounted at the rear of a Palfinger PK SH, TGX 10x4 with Faymonville Variomax, TGS 6x4 with Palfinger PK SH in red/black, TGS 10x4 with Liebherr HTM 1204 concrete mixer, TGS recovery truck - EMPL Bison Eichenseher s, Mercedes Actros with Schmitz Cargobull tipping trailer, Actros 10x4 with Moser twoway tipping body Senn-Brunnen, Actros 10x4 with Liebherr HTM 1204 concrete mixer, Actros 4x4 with snowplough and sanding bin Orange, Hamm three-wheeled 15

Translation of pages road roller 1911 pastel green, Goldhofer AST-1X aircraft transporter, Jungheinrich Electro lifter ERC 216 and ETV reach forklifts (the latter in 1:25 scale) EMD 1:50 We met Brandon Lewis from EMD at the Bymo stand. He announced four new models in his resin/white metal series. However, he was not able to give a firm date for the delivery of the 22-RB with dragline. GMTS Brinkmeier in 1:50/ 1:87 New to the very extensive line-up of old-timer trucks is a twin-axled trailer with double tires. As well, a three-axled trailer with single tires will be available; all trailers will be available in the full range of colors to match the existing truck fleet. A Henschel F221 truck with front end steering as a three-axled dump truck is a new offering. A future project, a three axled Scania LB 76 with a long hood and quarry stone body, was shown in the new catalogue. The production of the Krupp Dollberg D 200 dragline excavator has been put on hold due to a lack of pre-orders. Herpa 1:87 New designs in the heavy-duty transport segment are in the planning stage and will appear in the fall. Until then, many colour variations will bridge the demand. The very attractive nine-part set of the wind turbine transport fleet in the yellow colours of Ter Linden, produced in two series of 333 and 250 pieces, sold out shortly after the fair. Joal 1:50 The CA6000 road roller unit by Dynapac was on view as a pre-production sample; delivery is expected sometime in the fall of this year. Kibri/Viessman 1:87 The MB Trac 1500 is now available with built in lights. The 1800 model comes in black, painted for a museum; it is featured as the last Trac ever built. The Liebherr LTM 1050/4 stands out in its fire engine red with yellow lettering. The scale building sets for the fire brigade Fire hall, Garage and Office are, when painted differently, very usable for modeling the HQ of a construction firm. Motorart 1:50 Not even prototype pictures of the four new Volvo models announced were on show at the Swedish stand. This is because the originals are still in the final design stages. The new models, expected in the fall, are the A40F articulated dump truck, the EC200D hydraulic excavator, the L90G wheeled loader and the DD25D compactor. On the program for 2013 are the L50G and the EC480D. Noch 1:87 Two new sets of figures at work one with figures working on a scale brick wall and one set of painters painting. There is also one set with truck drivers; these are all of interest to construction model collectors. The small construction vehicles series made by Noch, that includes drivers in the cab, is also expanding. New from Zettelmeyer are the green and yellow, threewheeled road roller, and a green wheeled loader. Norscot 1:50/ 1:87 Unfortunately, nobody was able to provide us with firm delivery dates for the announced new items (see also the editorial on page 3). On show were the models that should have been delivered last fall: D8T with a single tooth rear ripping attachment, 740B with ejector body, Cat 785D with a Mega water tank, 323D L with demolition hammer attachment, 336D L with a large scrap shear in place of a jib, Compact loaders 226B3 and 247B3 with the new design look, A set with Cat CT660 lowboy trailer and 950H wheeled loader, Excavator-loader 450E in 1:87 scale with the Caterpillar logo on the backrest of the driver s seat. NZG 1:50 In addition to the Vögele MT i Offset feeder already introduced in this issue, the lads from Nuremberg surprised us with no less than three machines from the Liebherr stable: the A 918 compact mobile excavator, the R 936 tracked excavator and the SR 714 Welding tractor. The pre-production samples shown are very promising, but some fine-tuning is expected before the final production run. All models are expected within a few months. This reflects NZG s new strategy that all newly announced items are to be delivered within three months. The AC 200, upgraded with all 16

Translation of pages metal dolly wheels, has been re-issued for the lovers of construction cranes. As well as the Terex version, a new color scheme for Kran Merkel will be available. The rest of the news in short form: Liebherr L 586-2plus2 Eggersmann, R 916-Advanced Boymann and Gorissen, LTM Senn and Roxu, Volvo EC460C L van Dalen and Loock, EC460C LD Boverhoff, Hitachi ZX 1000K-3 2PB von Vliet and van Groningen, Hitachi ZX 1000k-3 40m-HL AD, Hamm GRW280 in white, Vögele Super VSI, Wirtgen W 100 F Borkowski, HBM Nobas BG 190 TA-3 Temmink, Scheuerle SPMT set Roll Polyp grappler hook and clam shell bucket for re-loading are available separately, Mercedes Actros dump trucks - 6x4 in yellow and 8x4 in red, Actros 8x4 concrete mixer Fischer Kies, Actros FH25 GigaSpace 4x2 in chrome and red, Actros FH23 StreamSpace 4x2 in chrome and red, Actros FHFH23 BigSpace 6x2 with Curtaininsider interchangeable body, MAN TGS 8x4 concrete mixer truck van Nieuwpoort, TGX Curtaininsider interchangeable body tractor-trailer set Maintaler, Shipping container 20 and 40 foot length in red brown, CMA CGM and Hamburg Süd Preiser 1:87/ 1:50 The re-issue of the Krupp 35 GMT mounted on a Faun chassis, and Magirus F 230 D 22 AK 6x6 dumpers will make many collectors happy. The kits come in a blue/red fire brigade version. The Gartenbau Müller set containing a Ford Transit, figures and accessories is only marginally connected to a construction theme. Surprisingly, two figure sets in 1:50 have been announced: standing women and standing men are uniquely suited as onlookers for construction sites. In the unpainted version, both sets are available as one complete package. This year Merton has a set of five roofers working in full swing. These were found at the Preiser stand. Schuco 1:87 The successful introduction of construction machines to the product line was followed this year by an articulated dump truck, the Liebherr TA 230. A toy fair highlight for the small-scale collectors who were not exactly favoured this year. The model of the Hamm HD+110 is almost production ready and is scheduled to appear in both versions in the second quarter of this year as will the Liebherr PR 744 Max Bögl. Finally, the L 550 2plus2 appeared in the blue colour of the THW. Siku This maker is clearly more directed toward the toy segment of the market. However, there was an interesting new discovery on their stand: the series of simple and reasonably priced tractors has been augmented with the Fendt 936 with the Scatter master SW 3 FC and stabilizer attachment, as often seen on soil stabilization construction sites. Sword Chuck Sword was also present at the Bymo stand. He talked about three projects he is working on; we can expect a firmer announcement in the fall. TWH The producer from Manitowoc did not show any new models. The firm is, however, in licensing negotiations with various manufactures in the US. According to Nicholas Neumann, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales at TWH, we can expect to see models of cranes, construction and mining machines if the negotiations are successful. Neumann continued, We have learned from our mistakes in the past and we will concentrate, in the main, on new model constructions. Universal Hobbies 1:50 The Komatsu D 155 ax-7 was available for inspection for the first time. The quality is remarkable due to its high metal content. The bulldozer is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of the year. Four to six new machine models are expected at the Intermat show in Paris, not all from Komatsu. Wiking 1:87 A pickup truck is the preferred vehicle for taking material and tools to smaller construction sites. The ideal new vehicle for this is the VW Amarok that will be available in a variety of different colours. The models of the large tractors, Claaas Xerion and Fendt 939 Vario, are welcome additions for larger sites. Unfortunately, there are no new construction machi- 17

Translation of pages nes on Wiking s new items to be released list. WSI 1:50/1:87 This supplier had a completely re-designed stand and showed off its new logo. The Sarens SGC 120 is, without a doubt, the largest crane model ever presented. The dimensions are very impressive: the model weighs 50 kg and reaches 2.6m high. In real life, this giant crane can lift 1000t with the arm extended 100m. We also can look forward to a model of the Liebherr LTM 1350 with flying jib top. Finally, for the cylinder controlling the boom, a metal casting and Allen screw were used. Thank you! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the manufacturers for their kind reception and helpfulness during the compilation of this report. In response to the wishes of many collectors, the firm is launching a completely new line of finely detailed models in 1:87 scale. To achieve detailing that rivals their larger 1:50 models, all forms and dies are currently being up-dated. YCC Unfortunately, this producer was not represented at the toy fair. We would have liked to quiz them about their expected model of the AMK

Translation of page 33 Eye Candy Clark Lima 2505 This model of the Clark Lima 2505 excavator, once produced by NZG, was made exclusively for the US market and in consequence, is a much sought after, rare piece by Albert Schmid Slowly but surely the new breed of hydraulic excavator pushed the dragline excavator out of the limelight as experienced by the US construction machine maker Lima, part of the Clark-Equipment Co. conglomerate. Lima successfully produced front shovel excavators in Ohio, starting in The first hydraulic excavator was introduced in Lima expanded this line further three years later with two sizes of new hydraulic excavators. On of them was the Clark Lima 2505 front shovel, equipped with a shovel that had a capacity of 1 m3. The propulsion unit used for this model was a 6-cylinder 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engine from GM producing 238 hp. The big breakthrough that Lima had hoped for in the US, or even in Europe, did not materialize. This led to the decision to stop production in It is impossible to ascertain how many units were actually produced. In 1973, Clark ordered a production model in 1:50 from NZG in Nuremberg. It was built in two series and numbered 147. The only difference between the two was an additional Clark sticker on the counterweight of the machine. According to NZG records, 5000 pieces were produced in 1974, with a top up series of a further 3000, all delivered to the US. This seems a huge number of models, but hand written notes from NZG confirms this. At this time, it should be said that serious collectors have doubts about the number of models produced. For a long time it was almost impossible for European collectors to find models of the Lima Only when they appeared on swap meets, or later on ebay did they start to appear in collectors display cabinets. By the way, research into model and prototype backgrounds is only possible if you have closelyknit contacts that provide you with the requested information. I would like to take the opportunity at this time to thank all of my contacts very much indeed. 19

Translation of pages Vögele MT i from NZG in 1:50 scale The connecting link by Daniel Wietlisbach mobile offset feeder is a unit A that is used between the truck bringing the surface material and the machine applying the road surface. It holds the surfacing material and feeds it continuously to the surfacing unit. This makes it possible to work without the interruption thus assuring a first class finished product. The receiving hopper has a capacity of about 8t. The unloading of a 25t truck directly into the working feeder unit takes only about 60 seconds. At the same time, it can deliver up to 60 % of the mix directly to the surfacing machine. The offset feeder has the capability of feeding two finishers at the same time for example, when building a highway. Since the conveyor belt swivels by 55 and can be lowered by 23 operation of the MT i has other possibilities. For example, it can feed surface finishers from the side, fill ditches or can assist in the surface paving of bike lanes or paths that separated from the rest of the road under construction. It is also possible to utilize the feeder when loaded with gravel, navy jack, top soil and more. The unit is powered by a Deutz Diesel engine producing 160 kw and conforms to the newest COM IIIB and Tier 4 emission control protocol. Only one person may control the unit however, the machine is configured to accommodate two operators. With the mobile connecting MT i offset feeder from Vögele, NZG presents a successful model of sub-species in the world of construction machines that deserves a closer look The model from NZG The model of the MT i was delivered directly after the annual toy fair. It is solidly constructed and has great detailing and functionality. The machine moves on rubber tracks that are very close to the rubber track plates of the prototype. The leaflet included is confusing at first as the prospectus contains out of date measurements. However, when checked against the real thing, the model scales out correctly. The walls of the hopper can be widened and tilted upwards, as per the prototype. The interior shows two moving augers; on the life-size machine, these are used to transport the material to the soft plastic conveyor belt in the middle of the machine. Two compartment covers on each side just above the chassis lift upwards. When opened, they allow a look on to the Deutz engine mock-up in semi relief. At a glance + Choice of prototype + Detailing and functionality + True to scale The operator s platform is, as on the original, equipped with two seats. These swivel and may be moved sideways. The control console sits in a guide that allows it to be moved to either side. The sunroof can be folded down to make transportation less cumbersome; there are two side extensions to protect the driver from suns ray. The centrepiece of the feeder is the movable conveyor belt. On the original, it is 7.30m long and 1.10m wide. On the model, all the very delicate movements that the prototype makes are possible. Most of the supply lines and hydraulic lines to the large lifting cylinders are there. The pins used on the joints are painted in matching colours so that they are barely visible. The conveyor belt itself is made from a very thin plastic band. A cloth tarp prevents the material from cooling too rapidly and protects workers from moving parts. A steel plate with holes, painted yellow and chrome does the same from below which is a very nice detail on the model. Paint job and lettering are superb as usual. The model is a jewel in any collection. 20

Translation of page 37 Mercedes-Benz LAK 2624 from Conrad A round thing The Mercedes-Benz LAK 2624 is a very versatile and widely used truck. Now collectors can enjoy the new all wheel drive LAK 2624 from Conrad by Daniel Wietlisbach Toward the end of 2011, this dump truck model was officially introduced in dark blue with the logo of the MBMC (Mercedes-Benz-Modelauto-Club) in a small issue of 100 pieces and in a real Mini series of five (!) pieces in pink. After criticisms from collectors, the chassis of the model was re-designed. Now the light green and the orange versions are correct underneath. The scale wheel distance of 3600 mm and 1340 mm is the same as the prototype. The rear axles follow little uneven spots on the surfaces without hanging in the air and the front axle can be steered prototypically. The dumping skip from MAN DHAK is well known. On first sight, the hooded front engine compartment gives the right impression. This is not accidental; since original plans for this were no longer available, the measurements for the hood and its form were taken from an original truck. Of course, it is also interesting to look underneath that hood and see the radiator and the mock-up of the OM 355 sixcylinder engine that produces 240 hp. A very innovative solution was found for the mounting of the window wipers. As they would hinder proper opening of the hood when mounted as usual, they were made from rubber and attached to the windscreen itself. The etching for the radiator grille that includes the famous star emblem is first class. The spotlights, lacquered with silver paint, have a clear plastic lens. The flashing lights on the cabin and the fenders painted orange. The windows with painted on gaskets are mounted flush. As usual, the buyer must attach side markers and rear - view mirrors. Since there was a special 6x4 LB version for concrete mixer trucks, one hopes for a fitting model to appear in the not too distant future. 21
