2 Integrated NESTO TM Pop-up nozzles A DIFFS is typically utilised on the deck of a helipad, or in a concrete floor for aircraft hangar applications. DIFFS Nozzles are typically integrated into the floor area. When not in use, these nozzles are flush with the surface. Once the system is activated they pop-up to simultaneously disburse foam in a 360 degree pattern covering the entire deck area within seconds ensuring rapid extinguishment. As the nozzles are fixed devices there is no manual adjustment required during an incident making them the preferred option in automatic systems or where remote activation is required.

3 Product Details Knowsley SK offer a complete turnkey solution for helideck protection comprising: > Foam Storage/proportioning skid design for 1% or 3% type foams and with options for inductor based proportioning or using the Turbinator foam proportioning device ideal for low pressure applications where inductors would be unsuitable > NESTO TM Pop-up nozzles To suit all environments, manufactured in Stainless steel 316 or Titanium. > Control System Master control panel for installation in the main control room with options for remote/ automatic operation and local call points for location at the helideck with options for safe or hazardous areas The complete Knowsley DIFFS system consists of a foam proportioning skid with automatic control valve, connected to a distribution pipework and the required quantity of pop-up spray nozzles. Fill Hatch Vac/Vent Level Gauge Foam Tank Tank sizes are typically 750 L for 3% foam type or 250 L for 1% foam type The pop-up spray nozzles are installed in the helideck and are fitted flush with the surface of the deck. When the system is activated, water pressure activates the nozzles, forcing the nozzle cone to lift, spraying a hemispherical discharge of foam solution. The nozzle is further designed to provide an upright jet of water, covering objects on the deck up to 7 meters above deck level. The nozzles are spaced evenly across the deck to give the required design density. When the system is shut down and reset, the pipework will be drained and the nozzles will drop back into the closed position, effectively closing the nozzle to prevent dirt and debris from entering the pipework.

4 Design References The installation of the NESTO TM DIFFS system must comply with international regulatory standards, the following standards are applicable to the system: CAP 437 > Standards for Offshore Helicopter Landing Area > Civil Aviation Authority, Safety Regulation Group > 7th edition 01/20123 ICAO Annex 14, Vol.1 > Aerodrome Design and Operations > International Civil Aviation Organisation > 11th amendment 15/2013 The NESTO TM Pop-up nozzle Design Considerations Foam Agent Rating In ICAO guideline 14 - volume 1, the required discharge rate is defined depending on the fire rating of the foam liquid that will be used. For Class B foams, a discharge rate of 5.5 l/m 2 /min is required, for Class C foams, a discharge rate of 3.75 l/m 2 /min is acceptable. Class A foams are not recommended for helideck protection and have become obsolete. The foam agent rating is an essential design requirement that must be defined by the client. If no foam agent rating is known, the system shall be designed for Class B foam. The foam proportioning skid with automatic control valve Note: CAP437 requires an average spray density of 6.0 l/m 2 /min for a Class B foam, with a minimum spray density of 4.0 l/m 2 /min. Water/Foam Premix Pressure The water/foam premix pressure determines the nozzle discharge rate. After the total required system discharge rate and the nozzle quantity are determined, the minimum required nozzle pressure can be found. Note: NESTO Helideck Protection nozzles have a functional working range from 4 to 8 barg. Refer to Selection & Design Manual for more details.
