9 Message from Marwan Abedin CEO, Dubai Healthcare City It was during the inaugural UAE Clinical Simulation Conference in February 2014 that one could fully comprehend how far the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center, the seat of medical education and research at Dubai Healthcare City, has come in delivering its promise of being a regional academic medical hub. By this admittance, we, as Dubai Healthcare City, look inwards, appreciating our achievements and acknowledging our role in furthering medical education. At the first conference dedicated to simulation, attended by more than 200 healthcare professionals, students and delegates, I gave the welcome address. It led to a realization. It wasn t the strength of the auditorium. It wasn t even the fact that the attendees represented 14 countries. Nor was it about renowned international speakers. It was based a humble observation - these professionals were interested in medical simulation. Health professionals face high pressure situations. Increasingly, studies demonstrate that simulation training allows safe exposure to critical incidents and crisis situations, developing clinical practice and skills. Safer medical practice translates into patient safety and our first conference highlighted this message. The conference also underscored the UAE National Agenda and Vision 2021 to promote education and increase medical capacity. The Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center is yoked to the success of both our first conference and pushing for simulation training in the region. For this, and to its patron Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, an Emirati philanthropist and the chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, we express our deepest gratitude. This book is dedicated to saving lives through medical simulation training. The realization nods to progress. It hints at yet another milestone achieved by the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center in advancing simulation in healthcare. Simulation, after all, is not a new field. It is however one that makes a virtue of health and safety. Simulation training is rather like a rehearsal before a real-life event. Any professional - be a doctor, paramedic or flight attendant can benefit from simulation training in a safe setting, allowing for clinical errors without harming human life. 11 Mohammed bin Rashid Academic Medical Center Your regional academic medical hub The Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center (MBR- AMC) is the seat of medical education and research at Dubai Healthcare City your health and wellness destination. From offering simulation training to continuing medical education workshops and postgraduate programmes, we, at Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), forge strategic partnerships with global medical institutions and technology providers. Our aim is to build medical capacity in the UAE and the region. The MBR-AMC also oversees the Dubai College of Dental Medicine (DCDM), which offers postgraduate programmes in partnership with Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSE). As a venue, MBR-AMC caters to medical education events through its auditorium, education suites, conference centers and lecture halls. Since 2002, under the auspices of our founder, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, DHCC has brought together a wealth of services in healthcare, medical education and research, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, wellness and allied support. For more than a decade, we have operated in Healthcare, Education and Research, Investment, and Regulatory. Located in the heart of Dubai, DHCC, a free zone, comprises two phases. Phase 1, dedicated to healthcare and medical education, covers 4.1 million square feet, and Phase 2, which is dedicated to wellness, will cover 19 million square feet. Development in Phase 2 is underway. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center is DHCC s dedicated academic complex. It is home to Al Maktoum Medical Library, and the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center (KHMSC), which has high-fidelity patient simulators to help health professionals continue to develop their technical and non-technical skills. Since its opening in 2012, the KHMSC has trained more than 1,400 medical professionals. 11

13 Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center The Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center (KHMSC), spread over 30,000 sq ft, is the first comprehensive simulation training facility of its kind in the region located within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center (MBR-AMC). It provides medical professionals with hands-on clinical simulation training through courses in specialties including respiratory, cardiology, diabetes management, anesthesiology and neonatology. All courses are CPD (continuing professional development) accredited. The facility is designed to replicate a hospital setting with functioning operating rooms, adult and pediatric intensive care units, and high-fidelity patient simulators - male, female and pediatric, for training; it has debriefing and seminar rooms. The courses can be tailor-made to address user requirements of simulated trauma scenarios, such as car crashes, complete with an ambulance environment. The Center has, since opening in November 2012, trained approximately 1,400 medical professionals. 13

15 Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Chairman of Al Habtoor Group Khalaf Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, is a prominent and highly respected citizen of the United Arab Emirates known for his many business achievements and philanthropic endeavors. He has generously donated funds to support the Khalaf Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center (KHMSC) - testament to his commitment to the advancement of healthcare in the region. Khalaf Al Habtoor believes in the right of all people to live a decent life and finds serenity through giving and sharing what he has. His interest in general human welfare is shown in large-scale gifts for local and international institutions that result in human advancement. Al Habtoor is a founding member of the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research. He is also the patron of the Khalaf Al Habtoor Harvard Research Fellowship, which was established in 2011 to support young investigators from the United Arab Emirates to work with a faculty mentor and research groups based at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health or one of the Harvard Medical School affiliated hospitals. Al Habtoor s dynamism and growth is further evidenced in his association with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center (MBR-AMC), and in particular, the Simulation Centre which bears his name. Al Habtoor has generously donated funds towards fitting out of the centre with the world s most advanced medical equipment for training, particularly in safety-critical areas of healthcare. The state-of-the art centre provides a world-class facility for team training and the practice of specialist skills, enabling health professionals to gain competence on simulators before treating real patients. 19 1 st UAE Clinical Simulation Conference 2014 The 1st UAE Clinical Simulation Conference took place February 26-27, 2014, organized by Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), and endorsed by the international body SESAM (Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine), the largest network of simulation professionals in Europe. It was held at DHCC s academic complex the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center (MBR-AMC), and themed Simulation a Storyboard for Training. The conference provided a platform to address the need for simulation training in medical curricula and hospital settings, and the need for improving teamwork, strategy and problem solving for the benefit of patient safety. The conference brought together international and regional experts in clinical simulation, catering to more than 180 healthcare professionals and students. It featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, parallel sessions and an exhibition, showcasing organizations that offer solutions in simulation practices. The international speakers were Dr. Basil Matta, Divisional Director from the Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, UK; Dr. Peter Dieckman, Work and Organizational Psychologist, the Danish Institute for Medical Simulation (DIMS), Denmark; Dr. Suzan E. Kardong-Edgren, Research Associate Professor, Boise State University, the US, Dr. Ralf Krage, President of SESAM, The Netherlands, the keynote speaker, and from the UAE, Dr. Nicklas Dahlstrom, Human Factors Manager, Emirates Airline. An appreciation award was presented during the conference to patron Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, an Emirati philanthropist and the chairman of the Al Habtoor Group. Dubai Healthcare City will organize the 2nd UAE Clinical Simulation Conference with SESAM in 2015 (February 24-25) at MBR-AMC. 19
