7 Foreword Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Haji Abdullah Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Berhad On behalf of Bursa Malaysia, I would like to bid all delegates a very warm welcome to the fourth annual Invest Malaysia conference Invest Malaysia 2008 (IM08). This year, Bursa Malaysia is pleased to host the conference with our joint sponsors AmInvestment Bank Group and Macquarie Capital Securities. Currently, we are experiencing global challenges that impact our markets. Despite these challenges, we are honoured to receive continued support and participation from institutional investors, particularly foreign investors at IM08. We are committed to continually provide a platform of engagement between investors and stakeholders of the Malaysian capital market. Whilst the country has experienced winds of change domestically, the economic fundamentals remain strong and the themes featured in IM08, namely Energy & Other Resources, Domestic Demand & Market Liberalisation, provide ample opportunities for growth. 8 Keynote speaker The Honourable Dato Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi Prime Mininster, Malaysia Dato Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi became the 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia on 31st October Born on 26 November 1939 in Kampung Perlis, Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang, Dato Seri Abdullah received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pematang Bertam. He later attended Bukit Mertajam High School, Penang Methodist Boys School and a religious school started by his family. Dato Seri Abdullah pursued his tertiary education at the University of Malaya where he graduated with B.A.(Hons) in Islamic studies in Upon graduating, Dato Seri Abdullah joined the civil service, where he started his career as Assistant Secretary in the Public Services Department in In 1969, Dato Seri Abdullah moved to the National Operation Council (NOC) or Majlis Gerakan Negara (MAGERAN), a body responsible to exercise the ruling powers for the country after the May 1969 racial riots. Dato Seri Abdullah was later promoted to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports as Director General ( ) and Deputy Secretary General in Dato Seri Abdullah resigned from Government service in 1978 to pursue a political career. A loyal UMNO member since 1965, he was elected UMNO Supreme Council Member in 1981, and UMNO Vice President in 1984, 1987, 1990 and He became UMNO Deputy President in Dato Seri Abdullah won his first election for the Parliamentary seat of the Kepala Batas constituency in 1978, (a seat he has retained since). In the same year, Dato Seri Abdullah was appointed to his first post in the administration of the Government of Malaysia, as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Territory Ministry. He was then promoted to Deputy Minister in the same Ministry in Dato Seri Abdullah later held the post of Minister in the Prime Minister s Department from 1981 to 1984; and Minister of Education from 1984 to 1986; Minister of Defence from 1986 to 1987; and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 15 Mac 1991 to In January 1999, Dato Seri Abdullah was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. Dato Seri Abdullah is also the Minister of Finance. 8

9 Plenary speakers Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop Minister of Finance II of Malaysia Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, aged 60 years, graduated from the University of Malaya in 1972 with a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree. He also obtained an M.B.A. (cum laude) degree from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in From 1968 to 1994, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed was with Bank Negara Malaysia. He rejoined Bank Negara Malaysia in September 1998 after a short period in the private sector and served until May From May 2000 until January 2004, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop served the Prime Minister as Special Economic Adviser. He was appointed Second Minister of Finance in January Tan Sri Nor Mohamed served 4 years as a Senator from January 2004 and was elected Member of Parliament for Tasek Gelugor in March During his service with Bank Negara Malaysia, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed was responsible for the implementation of a number of major projects, including the implementation of Islamic banking in Malaysia, the Ar-Rahnu (Islamic pawn broking) system, the setting-up of the bilateral payments mechanism between Bank Negara Malaysia and Central Banks of South-South countries, the setting-up of the Securities Commission, Cagamas Berhad and Rating Agency Malaysia Berhad. During the period of his service as the Special Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister in May 2000 until January 2004, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed played a major role in a number of corporate restructuring exercises including UEM, MRCB, MAS and the light rail transit companies (PUTRA and STAR). As Second Minister of Finance, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed continues to play an active role in the transformation of Government Linked Companies and is Chairman of the Putrajaya committee for GLC High Performance, as well as a director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad. During Tan Sri Nor Mohamed s tenure, the Ministry of Finance implemented a wide range of reforms including the consolidation of the fiscal deficit, reduction in the Corporate Tax rate and the removal of Real Property Gains Tax, in addition to capital market development initiatives such as the introduction of the Islamic ETF. 9

10 Plenary speakers Khazanah Nasional Khazanah is the investment holding arm of the Government of Malaysia entrusted to hold and manage the commercial assets of the Government and to undertake strategic investments. Khazanah was incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 on 3 September 1993 as a public limited company. Khazanah has an eight member board comprising representatives from the public and private sectors. YAB Dato Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Right Honorable Prime Minister of Malaysia is the Chairman of the Board. Khazanah has stakes in more than 50 companies with assets valued in excess of US$25 billion. Khazanah is also the state agency responsible for strategic cross-border investments. These companies are involved in various sectors such as power, telecommunications, banking, automotive, airport management, infrastructure, property development, broadcasting, semiconductor, steel production, electronics, investment holding, research technology and venture capital. Some of the key listed companies in Khazanah s investment portfolio include Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, CIMB Group, Proton Holdings Berhad, PLUS Expressways Berhad, Malaysian Airline System Berhad, Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad, UEM World Berhad, PT Bank Lippo and Time dotcom Berhad. Dato Azman HJ Mokhtar Managing Director, Khazanah Dato Azman is the Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah), the strategic investment arm of the Government of Malaysia. Prior to his appointment in June 2004, he was the Managing Director and co-founder of BinaFikir Sdn Bhd, a financial consultancy, the Director, Head of Country Research, Salomon Smith Barney Malaysia and the Director, Head of Research, Union Bank of Switzerland in Malaysia. Before that, he held various positions in the then National Electricity Board (LLN) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). Dato Azman is the Chairman of Valuecap Sdn Bhd, South Johor Investment Corporation (SJIC) and TM International Berhad and holds various board memberships including TM Berhad, UEM Berhad, UEM World Berhad, Iskandar Regional Development Authority and Malaysian Agrifood Corporation Berhad (MAFC). He serves on various public service bodies including the Advisory Board for Cluster of Excellence Schools, the Board of Governors of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, the Malaysian Directors Academy, Yayasan Khazanah and the Executive Committee of Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC). He is also a member of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club, the Asia Business Council and the INSEAD East Asia Council. He obtained his M.Phil in Development Studies from Darwin College, Cambridge University, is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Islamic Studies from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. 10

11 Plenary speakers Datuk Nasarudin Idris Vice President, Corporate Planning & Development, Petronas Datuk Nasarudin is a Vice President of PETRONAS heading the Corporate Planning and Development Division. He graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts in 1978, and joined PETRONAS in the same year. He holds an MBA degree from Henley-The Management College (UK) and a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Economics from the College of Petroleum Studies (UK). He is also an alumni of the Stanford Business School, having attended its executive program in the summer of Since joining PETRONAS he has undertaken various assignments within the Group including procurement and contracting, strategic planning, corporate development, and marketing. He had also served as the Executive Assistant to the President. His current responsibilities in Corporate Planning and Development include corporate strategy, planning and resource allocation, business development, mergers and acquisitions, international business and change management. Datuk Nasarudin is a Board member of PETRONAS as well as a member of the Group s Management Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors of various subsidiary companies of the Group. 11

12 Plenary speakers E. Kristine Klavers Vice President, Hart Energy Consulting Born in Oslo, Norway, E. Kristine Klavers obtained a master's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Twente, Netherlands. During her master s study, she developed a new catalyst for methane coupling at the Tokyo Institute of Technology that was bought for patent application by Idemitsu Oil Co. Prior to joining Hart in 1996, she worked in the Oxygenate Business Management for ARCO Chemicals Inc. in the U.K. ( ) and as a process engineer for Japanese Gasoline Co. (JGC) in Japan ( ). While with JGC, Klavers led many hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP) teams for refining, lube-oil, gas-processing and power-generation projects. She has been a guest lecturer at the Oxford Institute of Petroleum and Oxford University. Klavers joined Hart Energy in 1996 and has filled various positions within the consulting group. Today, she serves as vice president for Hart Energy Publishing LP, directs Hart Energy Consulting and is the publisher for FUEL. 12

For more information visit Datuk Bridget Lai Group Chief Executive Officer/Director Datuk Bridget Lai is a Director at Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad, Alliance Investment Bank Berhad and Alliance Financial Group Berhad. She joined Alliance Financial Group as its Group Chief Executive Officer on 1 September Prior to her appointment at Alliance Financial Group, Datuk Bridget was attached to a leading international Bank for many years and has vast and global experience in most aspects of banking operations. During her tenure at the international bank, she was the first and only Malaysian to be appointed the position of Country Head of Consumer Banking, Malaysia. She subsequently went on to hold an international position with the same bank as the Global Head of Distribution, making her the first Asian to hold the portfolio in the organisation. Datuk Bridget is also a proponent of gender equality issues in the corporate workplace. In July 2007, she was awarded the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year She was conferred her datukship in June 2007 by His Majesty, Yang Di Pertuan Agong. In addition to her MBA, she is also a member of the Malaysian Association of Company Secretaries and is a Certified Financial Planner. 13

14 AMMB Holdings AMMB Holdings Berhad ( AHB ) was incorporated in Malaysia as a public company under the Act on 15 August AHB is a bank holding company and has interest in investment banking (encompassing merchant banking, stockbroking and fund management), commercial banking and insurance business. As at August 2005, Tan Sri Dato Azman Hashim held (indirectly through various companies, including Arab- Malaysian Corporation Berhad which controlled 32.91% of AHB) an aggregate equity interest of 32.91%. Cheah Tek Kuang Group Managing Director Mr Cheah Tek Kuang, a Malaysian, aged 58, was appointed to the Board on 14 January 1994 as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director. He is currently the Group Managing Director of AHB. He joined AmMerchant Bank Bhd in 1978 and served in various senior positions in the Bank. In 1994, he was promoted to Managing Director, and he became the Group Managing Director of AmMerchant Bank Bhd from January 2002 to December 2004 before assuming the office of Group Managing Director in AHB. He remains as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director of AmMerchant Bank Bhd. His directorships in other public companies include AmInvesment Group Bhd, AMFB Holdings Bhd, AmBank Bhd and AmBank (M) Bhd. He also currently serves on the Board of Employees Provident Fund and Bursa Malaysia Bhd, and is the Alternate Chairman of the Association of Merchant Banks in Malaysia. Mr Cheah has a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree from the University of Malaya and is a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers Malaysia. Amarjeet Kaur Director, Group Corporate Services Ms. Amarjeet Kaur, aged 49, is currently Director, Group Corporate Services of AmBank Group in In her present position, her responsibilities include corporate affairs, investment, funding, capitalisation and investor relations. Prior to joining AmInvestment Bank, she worked in BNM various positions from April 1982 to February Ms Amarjeet holds a Bachelor of Accounting from University of Malaya and a Diploma in Banking from Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia and is a Certified Public Accountant. She is also a Director of AmSecurities Holdings Sdn Bhd, AMMB Nominees (Tempatan) Sdn Bhd, AMMB Nominees (Asing) Sdn Bhd, AM Nominees (Tempatan) Sdn Bhd and AM Nominees (Asing) Sdn Bhd. 14

15 Ann Joo Resources Ann Joo Resources Berhad ( AJR ) started out primarily as a scrap metal dealer in 1946 by the late Mr. Lim Kah Seng, its founder, whose vision and strong entrepreneurial spirit have brought much success to the company. Today, the AJR Group has grown as the one of the most efficient steel mill and largest steel stockist in Malaysia. Dato Lim Hong Thye Executive Director Dato Lim Hong Thye, aged 33, a Malaysian, was appointed as an Executive Director of Ann Joo Resources Berhad on 1 January 2003 and serves as a member on Strategic Business Unit Management. He was also appointed as a member of the Investment Committee in May He joined Ann Joo Resources Berhad on 1 August 2000 and was seconded to Ann Joo Steel Berhad on 10 August 2000 and was then appointed as Executive Director of Ann Joo Steel Berhad on 15 January 2004 and the President on 18 February Prior to that, he was with the Assurance & Advisory Service unit of Price Waterhouse and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Dato Lim Hong Thye holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from The University of Melbourne, a Chartered Accountant (CA) of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) of the Australian Society of CPAs. 15

16 Asiatic Development Asiatic Development Berhad ( ASIATIC ), a 55%-owned subsidiary of Genting Berhad, commenced its operations in 1980 as the plantation arm of the Genting Group. From a mere 13,700 hectares in 1980, the ASIATIC Group has steadily and strategically expanded its business operations. As part of its proactive growth strategies in recent years, ASIATIC had embarked on several significant acquisitions in Malaysia, thus increasing its land bank to the current 66,000 hectares of land producing over 1.2 million tones of fresh fruit bunch in In line with its corporate vision, it expanded overseas to Indonesia on a joint venture basis to develop some 98,300 hectares of vacant land near Ketapang, Kalimantan into oil palm plantation. ASIATIC also owns 5 oil mills with a total milling capacity of 235 tonnes per hour. ASIATIC is reputed to be one of Malaysia s lowest cost palm oil producers. Whilst plantation business remains the core activity, ASIATIC has since diversified into property development as a thrust in its diversification plans. With the objectives to unlock the potential of its strategically located land bank. ASIATIC has been pivotal in the development of widely recognized commercial and residential properties in Malaysia, i.e. Asiatic Indahpura, Kulai and Asiatic Pura Kencana, Batu Pahat both in Johor, Asiatic Cheng Perdana in Melaka and Asiatic Permaipura in Kedah. Yong Chee Kong Chief Operating Officer He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants. He joined Genting Berhad in 1985 and was transferred to Asiatic Group in 1991 as Financial Controller, which position was redesignated as Chief Financial Officer in In 1999, he attended the Advanced Management Program in the Harvard Business School. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in He holds directorships in a number of companies within the Asiatic Group and is a council member of the Malaysian Palm Oil Association. 16

17 Boustead Holdings Boustead Holdings Berhad (Boustead), one of Malaysia's oldest diversified conglomerates, was founded in 1828 and over the last 180 years, it has grown to comprise more than 80 listed and non-listed subsidiaries and associate companies, notably Boustead Properties Bhd, Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Bhd, Affin Holdings Bhd and UAC Bhd. He has vast experience in the global pipe coating business and oil and gas business in general. He also sits on the Board of several other private companies within WSC group of companies. 43

44 WCT Engineering Established on 14 January 1981 as WCT Earthworks and Building Contractors Sdn. Bhd., the Company assumed its present name WCT Engineering Berhad when it became a Public Listed Company (PLC) on 1 April WCT made its debut on the Second Board of Bursa Malaysia (Malaysia Stock Exchange) on 16 February 1995 and subsequently on 7 January 1999 was transferred to the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia.
