4 CIMA President s Visit to Malaysia Mr Ian Christison FCMA had a memorable time during his visit to Malaysia. During his 10-day stay from August 2005, he participated in various events including having a fun time with members and students. The highlight of his visit was an evening spent with members and students at Zouk, a hip and happening place in Kuala Lumpur. It was the first time ever that CIMA Malaysia Division held an event at Zouk. This is an unusual venue as it is a regular haunt for the young and yuppies in Malaysia. This new approach to getting participation from the young members and students was the brainchild of the Division s President, Mr Y C Lee FCMA. 170 CIMA members and students had a great night out, laughing to the antics of Logi & Monty, the comedians, and taking part in the games and lucky draws. The leaders of CIMA, Mr Christison FCMA, Mr Y C Lee FCMA and past presidents of CIMA Malaysia, led the way in dispelling the notion that accountants are square and boring by actively participating in the games and burning the dance floor. President of CIMA, Mr Ian Christison FCMA (4th from left) and President of CIMA Malaysia Division, Mr Y C Lee FCMA (3rd from left) along with CIMA students and the comedians, Logi and Monty. The charm and charisma of Mr Christison certainly had a great effect on rescuing lapsed CIMA members. During a dinner targeted at selected lapsed members, five out of six members who attended the dinner re-instated their membership. One was a member who had lapsed for 20 years while two others had lapsed for 10 and 11 years respectively. The dinner was but one of the activities to promote the reinstatement scheme for lapsed members in Malaysia. Another highlight of the President s visit to Malaysia was the launch of the CIMA Corner at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang. Mr Christison presented a set of the CIMA Study System to Professor Dr Dato Daing Nasir Ibrahim, Dean of the School of Management at USM. Mr Ian Christison and Ms Sopiah Suid (right), Divisional Director of CIMA Malaysia Division, with students at the Accounting Resource Centre, USM, Penang. The other appointments during the President s visit included a meeting with the Malaysia Divisional Council members, the face-to-face membership assessment, presentations on the CIMA Learning Scheme and a special briefing on elevation using the CV route. During the seminar, Ms Brewer spoke about her three years working for Enron and how she discovered bank fraud, corrupt dealings, espionage and power price manipulation. She also explained the role of the Integrity Institute which is to examine non-financial indicators of companies and to give them a better understanding of their business. She said, We want companies to understand what would happen if they allowed poor corporate governance to go on. If they don t change and end up becoming the next Enron, they will do it knowingly. The Integrity Institute has identified 10 non-financial indicators that have direct impact on an organisation s bottom line. The indicators are communications, compliance and ethics, corporate culture, earnings quality, environmental and social responsibility, executive compensation, governance, leadership, risk and stakeholder perceptions. She said that these measures also benefited consumers, allowing them to make informed decisions based on the integrity of the company. During the seminar, Ms Brewer was joined by her Associate, Mr Jonathan Lewis, Managing Director of Corporate Governance Accreditation (Pty) Ltd (CGA), Johannesburg, South Africa, who presented a paper on Your Business Excellence Assurance. 13 Three New Members in the MIA Council At the 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of MIA on 24 September 2005, three new members were elected to MIA s 30-member Council. Mr Paul Chan Wan Siew, Mr Terence Lee Cheang Hui and Mr Sam Soh Siong Hoon were elected to the Council under Section 8 (1) (g) of the Accountants Act 1967 replacing YM Raja Dato Seri Abdul Aziz Raja Salim FCMA, Mr Lam Kee Soon and Y Bhg Datuk Nur Jazlan Tan Sri Mohamed who have retired from the Council. The MIA AGM was held at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton and it was attended by 436 members. NAC 2005 attracts a record number participants The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) once again hosted its flagship annual event, the National Accountants Conference 2005 (NAC 2005). This year, the event registered more than 1,700 participants and marked another major milestone for the Institute. The NAC is a platform for members of the accounting fraternity to network, exchange ideas and generally update themselves on issues relating to the profession. Significant progress in the development and betterment of the profession can be achieved by the implementation of some of the many ideas conceived and shared at this conference. It has served as an important avenue to assess the profession s needs and adopt the best practices gained from this conference. This year, the two-day conference which was held from November 2005, at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur focused on the accounting profession s perspective in Accountants: Managers of Value. MIA President, En Abdul rahim Abdul Hamid, delivering his Welcome Address at the NAC 2005 opening ceremony. In conjunction with the event, both the MIA and the Malaysian Accountancy Research and Education Foundation (MAREF) presented the MIA-MAREF Outstanding Research Paper Awards (MORPA). It is the first time that MIA and MAREF are collaborating on a project of such nature to give due recognition to accountancy research which is cutting-edge and relevant in improving the practice of accountancy. By encouraging such outstanding practices, both organisations aimed to achieve excellence in accounting research initiatives. In his keynote address during the opening ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Education, YB Dato Sri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, said that this year s theme abstracts the role of accountants in a bold way, showing accountants awareness that they practise their well-established profession in changing circumstances, against a backdrop of new opportunities and challenges. With all these challenges before you, it is therefore appropriate that you are examining anew the scope of your profession, emphasising your responsibility to the community, reiterating your commitment to professional integrity and making sure that the training of accountants is up-to-date. Accountants must now also be well-rounded professionals with strong managerial and communicative skills. He also noted that members of MIA serve the country in many capacities. The range of occupations undertaken by accountants, or ex-accountants, is vast: from auditors and consultants to entrepreneurs, from restaurateurs to CEOs of public listed companies. In all these capacities, accountants bring a common set of skills, an understanding of the importance of controls, safeguards and visibility; a sense of the role accountability plays in making possible that trust between people which is the basis of prosperity, good governance and peace, he added. The MIA president, En Abdul Rahim Abdul Hamid meanwhile, stated that catalysts such as globalisation and trade liberalisation bring on new challenges upon the accounting profession and the need of a common set of standards in accounting, auditing and ethics is an imperative. 16 CIMA Members Celebrate Their Success A proud moment for the graduates. Mr Chooi Yew Tzen ACMA (right) receiving his scroll from the President of CIMA Malaysia, Mr Y C Lee FCMA. A total of 52 new Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows of CIMA celebrated their achievement in a grand ceremony on 20 November 2005 at the Prince Hotel and Residence, Kuala Lumpur. Together with families and loved ones, more than 200 people filled the ballroom to join in the joyous occasion. The event was made more memorable by the presence of Mr Robert Jelly, CIMA s Director of Education, and Mr Aruna Alwis, Divisional Manager of CIMA Sri Lanka. The Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows received their scrolls from Mr Y C Lee FCMA, President of CIMA Malaysia Division. Mr Lee urged CIMA members to improve their soft skills in facing the current global challenges for accountants. He said, The global challenges facing accountants today are numerous and it is important to have the right attitude towards self-development and to be motivated enough to learn new things. Technical skills alone are insufficient; they must be supplemented with soft skills as they add up to the competency of oneself. Develop your soft skills such as communication, leadership, analytical and inter-personal skills. These are crucial in ensuring that you are effective in your jobs and that will lead to greater success in your careers. Mr Lee also reminded CIMA members to remember the sacrifices made by their families and loved ones in their pursuit for success. He said, In your journey to success, there are many who have lent a hand along the way and we must not forget them. They are the ones who gave their support unselfishly; who lent you a shoulder to lean on when the going got tough; who encouraged you when you felt like giving up. The CIMA Membership Graduation and Certificate Presentation Ceremony is an annual event held to celebrate the success of Passed Finalists, Associates and Fellows. CIMA graduates congratulating one another. CIMA Divisional Council members are seated in the front row, with Mr Aruna Alwis (6th from left) and Mr Robert Jelly (7th from left).
