1 PART 1 GENERAL SCOPE The Contractor shall furnish and install fixed power factor correction equipment as specified herein and as shown on the contract drawings. This specification contains the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of fixed power factor correction capacitors rated 2400V, 4160V, and 4800V. Power factor correction equipment provided under other sections of the specifications as part of other equipment shall comply with this section of the specifications. Should the manufacturer or supplier of the equipment specified under this section take exception to any part of this specification, he shall so state in his bid, by reference to each item number. REFERENCES The power factor correction equipment shall be designed and tested in accordance with the latest standards of NEMA, NFPA, IEEE and ANSI. The equipment shall be CSA certified for Canadian applications. Capacitor shall be designed to NFPA 70 (NEC) sections , and SUBMITTALS FOR REVIEW/APPROVAL The following information shall be submitted to the Engineer: a. b. c. Front view elevation Floor plan Equipment ratings including: Short-circuit rating Voltage Continuous current SUBMITTALS FOR CONSTRUCTION The following information shall be submitted for record purposes: Instructions Certified production test reports Installation information Material Safety Data Sheet QUALIFICATIONS The manufacturer of the assembly shall be the manufacturer of the major components within the assembly. 2 For the equipment specified herein, the manufacturer shall be ISO 9001 or 9002 certified DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING Equipment shall be handled and stored in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. One (1) copy of these instructions shall be included with the equipment at time of shipment. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUALS Equipment operation and maintenance manuals shall be provided with each assembly shipped and shall include instruction leaflets, instruction bulletins and renewal parts lists where applicable, for the complete assembly and each major component. PART 2 PRODUCT RATINGS The system operating voltage (2400V, 4160V, or 4800V) shall be as indicated on the contract drawings. The KVAR for 4.16kV or 4.8kV capacitor banks shall be as specified between 25kVAR to 900KVAR in increments of 25KVAR. The KVAR for 2.4kV capacitor banks shall be as specified between 25kVAR to 825KVAR in increments of 25KVAR. The capacitor shall be rated for continuous duty from 40ºC to +45ºC ambient at 3,300 ft. (1,000 meters) and below. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 5% of voltage waveforms shall not affect the life of capacitors. A +/- 10% variation in line voltage shall not affect the life of the capacitor. The capacitor shall be suitable for operation over a temperature range of 40ºC to +45º ENCLOSURE G. H. I. The assembly shall have capacitor cell, capacitor mounting frame for multiple capacitor cells, termination box, current limiting fuses, and viewing window. The enclosure (capacitor cell & terminal box assembly) shall be rated NEMA 1, 3R, and 12. The enclosure steel shall be 14 gauge thick steel The terminal box inside shall have a grounding stud welded to the frame near the top and front cover. The terminal box inside shall have adequate space for shielded cables and stress cones. The enclosure terminal box shall be designed for top or side entry. The terminal box shall have a removable top and front cover. The viewing window shall be mechanically reinforced in the rear inside. The front cover shall be removable and bolted with platted bolts. 3 J. K. L. M. N. O. P. The overall dimensions shall not exceed 46 H x 30 W x 22 The enclosure front cover shall have gaskets. A ground screw shall be provided inside the termination and suitable for cable shield ground. Capacitors shall include Danger, turn off power and wait five minutes before working inside unit labels. A terminal box shall be provided on top of the capacitor cans for power connections. The front removable cover shall have a handle for lifting the front cover. The enclosure shall be designed such that power cables can enter from the top, rear, or either sides CAPACITOR G. Individual capacitors shall be film/foil design with a biodegradable NFPA Class III B dielectric fluid. Capacitors shall have less than 0.2 watts per KVAR losses and low internal heat generation. Each capacitor cell shall contain less than three gallons of liquid. Capacitors shall be designed to meet ANSI / IEEE standard 18, NEMA CP1, and IEC Capacitors shall have Danger, High Voltage warning labels. Capacitor case material shall be ANSI 409 stainless steel and painted ANSI#70 grey suitable for outdoor installation. Capacitors shall be 3-phase, 3-bushing, 60kV BIL. (For CSA labeled units the BIL is 75kV). DISCHARGE RESISTORS Each capacitor unit shall be provided with an internal discharge resistor to reduce the residual voltage to less than 50 volts within five minutes after the capacitor is disconnected from source of supply. FUSES To provide for major fault protection and capacitor case rupture protection, current limiting fuses shall be provided on the capacitor bank. Fuses shall be current limiting and rated 50kAIR. Fuses for 2.4kV nominal voltage shall be rated 4.3kV. Fuses for 4.16kV nominal voltage shall be rated 5.5kV. Each fuse shall be equipped with a pop-up button to provide visual indication of a blown fuse. All three phases for each capacitor shall have fuses. (Option for only two phase fused is available if specified). The top of the fuses shall have a copper L bracket for power cable terminations. G. Each fuse blown fuse indicator shall be visible through the viewing window POWER TERMINATIONS Each assembly shall be furnished with diameter hole in copper L-bracket on top of the fuse for termination of Customer 1- hole lug. The Customer s cable termination hole will be supplied with Grade 5 bolts, flat washers, lock washers and nuts. For units with multiple capacitor cells the phase shall be paralleled using silver platted copper bus. GROUNDING The capacitor case shall be bonded to the terminal box ground stud. The front removable cover shall have ground stud. The main enclosure steel shall have a grounding stud. The front removable covers shall be bonded to the main ground stud of the terminal box using green grounding conductor MOUNTING The assembly shall have holes in the base frame to anchor the equipment to the floor. For assemblies with multiple capacitor cells the frame shall have provisions for anchoring the floor at four places spaced equally around the equipment. Gillette Project The termination box shall have WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE label. The termination box shall have DISCONNECT BEFORE OPENING label. The termination box shall have WAIT 10 MINUTES BEFORE TO ALLOW CAPACITORS TO DISCHARGE label. FINISH The paint system shall be suitable for outdoor installation. Exterior color shall be light grey. PART 3 TESTING 3.01 FACTORY TESTING All capacitors shall be tested in compliance with IEEE Standard 18 and CSA requirements for capacitance, dissipation factor, terminal to terminal, and terminal to case dielectric strength, and oil leaks. Each capacitor unit shall be tested for low voltage capacitance, ground test over-voltage, dielectric test over-voltage, capacitance measurement, loss measurement, and discharge resistor measurement. 5 Each assembly shall be tested for insulation integrity (Megger) Phase to Ground and Phase to Phase before shipment using 500V Megger output. 60kV Impulse design test shall be done on each design of the capacitor bank. (For CSA labeled units the BIL is 75kV). PART 4 SHIPMENT 4.01 PACKAGING The assembly shall be wrapped in plastic and the corners protected with cardboard. Each assembly shall be shipped with a copy of the O&M, MSDS and Test Report. Each assembly shall be bolted to the wood pallets and strapped to the pallet. PAGE 5 OF 5 REV. 0 /
