Introduction: Electric Lawn Edger This Atom Electric Powered Edger is designed to the highest standards to ensure you many hours of uninterrupted service. Pay special attention to the safety precautions. Only persons who understand this Manual are to operate the Edger. To receive maximum performance and satisfaction from your Edger, it is important that you read and understand the maintenance and safety precautions before using the unit. Contact your Atom dealer or the Atom distributor in your area if you do not understand or cannot carry out any of the operating instructions in this Manual. Atom s philosophy is to continually improve all of its products. As a result, engineering changes and improvements are made from time to time. Appearances may differ between models. This manual covers information required to operate, maintain and service this electric Lawn Edger. AS WITH ANY POWER TOOL IMPROPER USE CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY. Make sure this manual is read and carefully understood before starting or operating this equipment. The purpose of Safety! 2 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS As with any power tool, the use of any! WARNING with rotating blades may be dangerous. It is important that you read, fully understand, and observe the following safety precautions and warnings. Re-read this operator s manual and the safety instructions periodically. Read and understand all labels attached to edger. Do not lend, rent or sell this machine! WARNING without the operator s manual. Be sure that anyone using this unit understands the information contained in this manual before use. As with any power tool, some special! WARNING safety precautions must be observed to reduce the risk of personal injury. Careless or improper use may cause serious or even fatal injury. Safe use of an Atom Edger involves:.the Operator..The Atom Edger. 3.The use of the Atom Edger. THE OPERATOR PHYSICAL CONDITION Operator must be in good physical FIG 3 condition and mental health, and not under the influence of any substance (drugs, alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgement (Fig 3). Do not operate the Edger when fatigued. Be alert if you get tired while operating the machine, take a break. Tiredness may result in loss of control. Working with any power tool can be strenuous. If you have any condition that might be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operating the machine This Edger! WARNING must not be operated by minors. Bystanders, especially children and animals should not be allowed in this area where a machine is in use and be at least 5 metres (50 feet) away (Fig 4). If approached switch off motor immediately. When not in use store the edger out of reach of children. PROPER CLOTHING Clothing must be sturdy and snug-fitting, but allow complete freedom of movement (See Fig 5). Avoid loose-fitting jackets, flared or cuffed pants, or anything that could trip the operator. Wear overalls or long pants to protect your legs. DO NOT wear shorts. Use of gloves when working with the Lawn Edger is recommended. Good footing is most important. Wear sturdy shoes with nonslip soles. DO NOT wear sandals, open footwear (flip-flops) or FIG 4 FIG 5 operate with bare feet. In hot or sunny conditions, always wear a hat and long sleeve shirt for protection against skin cancers. Use of a good brand of sunscreen cream is also recommended on exposed skin surfaces. Proper eye protection is a! WARNING must. The blade cover may not protect the operator from all moving foreign objects, even though the discharge is directed away from the operator, as ricochets and bouncebacks may occur during edger operations. Never operate an Atom Edger unless wearing goggles or properly fitting safety glasses with adequate front and side protection which comply with ANSI Z 7.. Replace immediately any worn or! WARNING broken debris deflector shield or blade cover. Check from time to time that all screws are tight. SAFE WORKING INSTRUCTIONS AND IMPORTANT ADJUSTMENTS Never operate your machine if it is damaged, improperly adjusted or not completely and securely assembled. SAFE MAINTENENCE, REPAIR AND STORING Use only original Atom replacement parts for maintenance and repair. Use of parts manufactured by others will void warranty and/or may cause serious or fatal injury. Always stop the motor, make sure! WARNING that the blades have stopped, before adjusting blade height. Before doing any maintenance or repair work, or cleaning the unit or blades, disconnect extension cord. Follow the maintenance instructions in the appropriate section of this manual. Any motor repairs should be carried out by a person with suitable sevicing experience. SAFE STARTING AND WORKING CONDITIONS Always inspect that the unit is in good working order before use. When working with the Atom Edger, always wrap your fingers tightly around each handle grip. Keep your hands in this position to have your machine under control at all times. NEVER attempt to operate the Atom Edger with one hand, as a loss of control may result in serious or fatal injury. Make sure the handle grips are in good condition and free of moisture, oil or grease. Use both hands, one on each handle, to operate and control the edger. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Edger blade can cut extension cord.! WARNING Keep the extension cord away from the cutting blade (Fig 6). A cut extension cord is dangerous and can be fatal to you or others. ELECTRICAL SAFETY. This double insulated electric edger is only to be used on 40 volt power supply.. Where possible use an approved Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (Residual Current Device) safety switch at the powerpoint or switchboard. 3. Avoid dangerous situations. Do not use in the presence of flammable liquids or gasses to avoid creating a fire or explosion. 4. Do not attempt to use unit if there is any damage. Do not use until damage is repaired by an authorised service centre. FIG 6 Do not use in rain, in damp or wet! WARNING locations, or around swimming pools, hot tubs etc. Do not expose to water, rain, or snow to avoid the possibility of electrical shock. 5. Damaged supply cord (on edger motor). This must be replaced by an authorised service agent or similarity qualified person in order to avoid a hazzard. 6. Never carry the unit by the extension cord or yank the extension cord to disconnect the unit. PAGE

3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (CONTINUED) Use extension cords specifically marked as! NOTE suitable for outdoor appliances. These have minimum mm diameter copper wire. In Australia/NZ, these are now yellow in colour. Do not use white coloured or light gauge undersized extension cords as these will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. If in doubt, use the next heavier guage. Inspect the extension cord before each use and do not use if damaged in any way. To reduce the possibility of the extension cord disconnecting from the unit during operation, loop the extension cord to the extension cord anchor as shown (Fig ) CLEANING UNIT AFTER USE When cleaning, disconnect electrical cable (Fig ) and do not use water hose. Scrape dirt away. If motor accidentally wet by water, allow to dry in the sun, inspect and ensure it is dry before use. DO NOT USE hose water to clean machine as it could force water into casing and motor. FIG FIG TOP VIEW Always disconnect motor power cable from extension cord when removing blades cover, cleaning blades, adjusting wheel depth, cleaning unit, etc. Do not use the edger if the switch does not turn the edger on and off properly. Repairs to the switch must be made by qualified electrical service personnel. ASSEMBLING THE Fit cross brace #7 with base down as illustrated, to handle tubes #3 & 5. Use screws # and lock nuts # provided in packet. Use straight blade screwdriver or torx 5 screwdriver. Screw on firmly. Insert 75mm (6.5 ) bolt # through the head retainer # (note arrow points forward) then through LH handle tube #3 then through edger 5 body #4 and RH handle tube #5.Handle tubes are identical. Fit so label sits upwards. Screw large wing nut #6 on protruding bolt and tighten. 6 Insert Trigger Handle # onto RH 4 handle tube. Use one screw # and one nut # to fix handle to tube. Clip throttle cable #0 into place, Fig.A, B and anchor cord # Keep the extension cord clear of operator and obstacles at all times. Do not expose the cords to heat, oil, water, or sharp edges. Do not edge next to cord, or walk on or drive over cord. Do not store unit outside but only indoors in secure dry place. EDGER 7 3 FIG 0 FIG 3 FIG A FIG B FIG D Throttle cable #0! NOTE from motor must loop under edger body and clip into place then over top of cross brace #7 and clip into place on RH top side of brace. Attach extension cord to plug of motor and fit extension cord to anchor (Fig F). Clip cord anchor # onto LH handle #3 and fit together onto LH handle tube #3 (Fig D). Fit screw # with nut #. 4 PARTS & CONTROLS +. The handles of the edger are held by both hands. 3. The throttle interlock which releases the throttle trigger that switches motor on and automatic safety clutch engages and thus rotate blades. 4. Handle nut on RH side of edger for holding handles onto housing. 5. Depth adjustment for adjusting wheel to regulate blade depth. 6. Handle to carry edger. 7. Blade cover reduces the risk of flying debris and direct contact with the feet or hands. 4. Blades rotate when motor is switched on.. The Atom Edger is very easy and simple to use. You will soon become an expert after a few edgings.. Thoroughly inspect the area where the edger is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wires and other foreign objects. 3. Adjust blade height (Fig 4) and with new blade, try No. position. 4. Use both arms extended downwards, as in Fig 5A, hold both handle grips firmly. Switch motor on by pushing down safety interlock with thumb and pulling trigger (Fig 3). Do not overload motor, allow it to run freely. To stop motor, release trigger. 5. If blade is not deep enough, or if digging too deep, adjust blade height, to suit depth required (Fig 4). It is always more comfortable and relaxed to have arms fully extended downwards as shown in Fig 5A and on front cover illustration. 6. Do not lift handles by excessive bending of elbows (Fig 5B). 7. As cutting action begins, move the lawn edger forward so that the blade can cut the edge as you move forward (Fig 6).. Continue at a moderate pace until you are familiar with the controls and the handling of the Atom Edger. Only operate! WARNING unit when moving forward. DO NOT operate walking backwards, as you may trip, fall and injure yourself. EDGING INSTRUCTIONS FIG 4 HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT FIG 5A FIG 5B () PULL THROTTLE, TRIGGER BACK. Blade speed should be fast under load with blade rotating. If blade turns slowly, jams or stops in the ground (Fig 7), lower handles or release trigger and recommence (Fig 6). 0. Clutch: The Atom Edger is equiped with a safety clutch. DO NOT run edger if blade is jammed, as clutch shoes will prematurely wear and cause damage if cutting blades do not rotate (Fig 7).. Edging along concrete edge: For position of blade, align edge guide (at front of blade cover) with edge of concrete. If blade hits concrete, lower handles and re-position blade at side of concrete. Even with the grass growing over the concrete and you cannot see the edge, you can feel the edge of the concrete with the rotating blade by slightly sideways tilting the handles of the edger away from the concrete so that the blade tilts towards the concrete and skims below the concrete edge which acts as a guide (Fig ). Edger blades are made from high tensile hardened spring steel and will last a long time. Once the edge is established the second FIG and subsequent times around are very fast. 3. 5 To avoid personal! WARNING injury, never carry the Edger while the motor is running. Never hold the handle cross brace if the motor is running. (Fig.0). Stop the motor and disconnect the power extension cord prior to lifting or carrying. The Lawn Edger can be trasported by guiding it on its wheel, or carrying it with motor switched off holding long handle between blade cover and motor. EDGING INSTRUCTIONS (CONTINUED) FIG 0 TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS PROBLEM CAUSE ACTION REF.. Blades do not turn Loose blade nut or incorrect assembly. Tighten blade nut (or also add washer under nut). Motor damaged. Keep the inside of! NOTE blade guard clean, especially in muddy conditions. A clogged guard can slow down or stop blade rotation and may cause damage to automatic safety clutch. Always operate blade at high speed when edging. To prevent damage to edger body, untangle and remove any grass, vines or wire that may wrap around the blade drum. FIG Reconnect Click to ON. If residual current device continues to cut out, check cables, house power point or house safety switch could be faulty. Replace extension cord. Take to service dealer. Take to service dealer. 4. Page 7 MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS BLADE REPLACEMENT. Use impact driver to undo blade nut, then proceed to instruction 4. Otherwise clean area around dust cover #636 and pry off with screwdriver (Fig. ) exposing 4mm hex head (for unscrewing blade nut).. Through dust cover hole, place 4MM FULL 6 SIDED 6 pointed socket spanner (do not use sided pointed socket spanner) over hex head, and use mm (or adjustable) spanner on blade nut.(fig. 3). 3. Unscrew blade nut counter (anti) clockwise (normal right hand thread). FIG FIG 3 4. Remove nut, one large washer and two blades (Fig. 4). Before installing blade and washers, clean off all grit and grease. Re-assemble these parts clean and dry. Fit large washer, new blades #4305 with spiggots of one blade interlocking with holes on opposite blade, large washer and nut. Tighten nut to 5-0ft.lbs. (0-7Nm) or hand tight with (00mm) or longer spanner. FIG 4 FITTING INSTRUCTIONS FIT BLADES AT RIGHT ANGLES SPIGOTS ON EACH BLADE FIT INTO HOLES OF OTHER BLADE USE ONLY ORIGINAL ATOM BLADES! WARNING #4305. Other blades have larger size holes (/ ) which will cause out-of-balance vibrations which will damage unit and cause injury. Other blades can also break and cause major injury. Circular blades must not be used. Only use ORIGINAL Atom blades otherwise warranty is VOIDED. Always use two blades as shown above. Never! NOTE use a single blade. Do not use other thicker blades as you will damage the unit. Hardened Atom spring steel cross blades absorb shock when rocks and hard objects are hit, ensuring long edger life. Non-Atom edger blades do not absorb shock due to solid stiff construction. Gear and edger life is reduced. NO WARRANTY allowed if damage to Atom unit caused by use of non genuine Atom parts. PAGE 5

6 WORKSHOP INSTRUCTIONS NOTE: This information is for persons with suitable servicing experience should this unit ever require workshop repair. TO REMOVE MOTOR POD. Use a screwdriver or preferably a No.5 torx screwdriver, remove 3 screws located as shown Fig 5.. Pull motor out from edger casing. It is NOT necessary to remove handles. TO REMOVE & REPLACE CLUTCH DRUM Remove motor. Lock blade in bench vice and spin off clutch nut anti-clockwise with impact driver. Replace parts as required. Reverse procedure to re-install. TO REMOVE WHEEL ARM Undo nut and pull wheel arm out of casing (Fig 7). FIG 5 TO REMOVE BLADES COVER Unscrew outer 5 screws and lift off half cover (Fig 6). To remove other cover half, unscrew the 3 screws with 3 washers. TO REMOVE CLUTCH. Remove motor pod from edger by removing the 3 screws (Fig 5). Place sideways on a bench and unscrew cover screws and remove cover #63373 (Fig 33).. Insert 5mm rod through body lug and turn clutch until rod passes through shaft hole (Fig 33) to lock shaft. 3. Use screwdriver and tap end of clutch hub (left hand looking at clutch) and spin clutch off (Fig 34). FIG 33 FIG 6 FIG 7 FIG 34 LUBRICATION OF GEARS There is usually sufficient lubricant to last the ifetime of the edger. TO REPLACE BLADE SHAFT. After removing blades (Refer Pg 5, Fig. and 3) remove blade drum #43. Inspect threaded end of shaft and file off any rough surfaces so shaft is round and smooth.. Hold unit as shown in Fig. and tap shaft through using a 3/ bolt or similar so that bolt replaces shaft and maintains alignment and contains gear inside housing DO NOT TURN HOUSING OVER. 3. Carefully push new blade shaft #434 up into bearing and tap through carefully so crown gear remains in position and the 3/ bolt is pushed out (Fig. 30). FIG FIG To replace clutch assembly, reverse procedure above. TO REPAIR THROTTLE TRIGGER ASSEMBLY. Remove screws and remove cover and all parts. Re-assemble as follows.. Fit throttle inter-lock compression spring (Fig 35). 3. Fit trigger compression spring then trigger. Front of Trigger spring fits over retainer post (Fig 35 and 36). Fit throttle cable (note position) (Fig 37). 4. Hold trigger in place with finger until throttle cover is fitted (Fig 3). Ensure throttle cover rear tabs (arrowed Fig 3) engages underside of handle wall. It is then ready for screwing tight (with screws). FIG 3 IF SWITCH DOES NOT WORK Fig.37 shows normal position throttle cable. If inner cable stretches in use it may be necessary to move outer cable forward by loosening cover screws -3mm and then retighten so switch can be activated. PAGE 6

7 DISMANTLING RE-ASSEMBLING MAIN BODY NOTE: This information is for persons with suitable servicing experience should this unit ever require workshop repair.. Undo handle nut and remove handles.. Remove motor (Fig 5). 3. Remove blade cover, lid, inner blade cover, blades and blade washer (Fig 6 and Fig 7). 4. Remove wheel arm nut and wheel arm (Fig 6 and 7) 5. Remove all screws seen on LH main edger body casing. 6. Carefully separate both casings. 7. Thoroughly clean and inspect gears, bearings, seals. Replace any worn parts.. Renew gear box sealing ring if necessary. Carefully fit sealing ring in place. Pre-rolling the sealing ring will allow it to wrap around the sealing lip of casing.. Refit blade shaft.! NOTE Apply liberal amount of grease before fitting crown gear. 0. A silicone gasket sealant will assist in sealing any worn casings or damage.. Slide casing over shaft and press down onto lower case.. Start screwing from gear box position then evenly on alternative sides. Turn clutch drum to ensure gears turn. 3. To assemble unit, re-assemble in reverse order 5 through to of above instructions. Replace blades if required. ELECTRIC MOTOR POD ASSEMBLY Place pod upside down on bench. Refer to parts explosion Page. Remove Air Intake Cover # Remove 6 screws and separate casings. All internal parts rest in casing. Lift out and replace as required. Re-assemble in reverse order. RECOMMENDATIONS Replacement factory built assemblies available if ever required. Original sales docket must be shown as proof and date of purchase.
