4 W. Arthur Fisher V972 valves must only be used within their specified limitations. Failure to abide to these limits may result in damage to the valve and serious injury or death to personnel. Installation, repairs and maintenance should only be carried out by suitably qualified personnel. Before servicing any valve, disconnect, shut off or bypass all pressurised fluid. Before disassembling a valve be sure to release all spring tension. Installation Ideal Installation Schematic 1. Your V972 valve is designed for sanitary service and should be installed in a clean system. As such, strainers at the valve inlet should not be necessary. 2. Isolation valves, pressure gauges and bypass piping should be installed as indicated in the diagram to provide easier adjustment, operation and testing. 3. The valve is normally installed with the inlet vertical on the bottom, and the outlet horizontal to provide the best drainage within the valve. This is recommended only for drainage considerations and the valve will function in any orientation. 4. Use caution in tightening commercial sanitary fittings. Over-tightening can cause the gasket to extrude into the flow passage. 5. In gas or vapour service, it is recommended that the outlet piping is at least one pipe size larger than the inlet. 6. Provide proper air pressure to the valve. The maximum rating of the actuator is 50 PSI. Exceeding this pressure may damage the valve and cause danger to equipment and personnel. 7. Where liquid pressure surges are severe a piping accumulator is recommended to prevent hammer. 4

Be sure that the action of the control valve and of the controller is such as to give the desired results. See the section on Reversing Action to change the valve action if necessary. And Valve action is Air to close Air to open Air to close Air to open Controller action must be Direct Reverse Reverse Direct 2. The control valve has been preset by W.Arthur Fisher Ltd. However finer adjustments may be required to compensate for specific installed conditions. 3. With the inlet, outlet and bypass valves closed and no pressure in the downstream line, fully open the downstream isolation valve. Slowly open the inlet isolation valve just enough to start flow through the control valve. Do not fully open the inlet valve until you are sure the control valve is controlling the system flow. Maintenance Valve Disassembly Remove valve body sub-assembly from actuator as follows. 1. If valve is Air to Open apply air to the actuator to lift the plug off the seat. 2. Loosen and remove the two yoke pillar nuts(7). 3. Release the stem snap coupler (8) and lift the actuator from the valve body. 4. Loosen and remove bonnet clamp(4). 5. Remove valve plug(3), stem o- ring(5), and body seal(2). 6. Inspect and replace any damaged or worn parts. 5

6 Actuator Disassembly 1. Remove actuator from valve assembly as per previous instruction. 2. Remove nuts(35) and bolts(34) which hold together actuator casings 3. Remove actuator stem bolt(32). Lift off springs(39), spring plate(28), diaphragm(29), spacer (55M only), seal washer(30) and seal ring(31). Remove actuator stem(22). 4. Unscrew gland nut (25)from the gland(26) and remove stem seal(27). 5. Inspect and replace any worn or damaged parts. Actuator Reassembly After all parts have been thoroughly cleaned and inspected reassemble the actuator Air to Open Configuration 1. Lightly grease the stem seal and install in the counterbore of the gland 2. Install gland into the lower actuator casing using the gland gasket and gland nut and tighten. 3. Insert stem through the gland with the flats below the gland. 4. Assemble the spacer(55m only), spring plate, diaphragm, seal washer and seal ring onto the actuator bolt and thread onto actuator stem. Air to Close Configuration 1. Lightly grease the stem seal and install in the counterbore of the gland 2. Install gland into the lower actuator casing using the gland gasket and gland nut and tighten. 3. Insert stem through the gland with the flats below the gland. 4. Place the springs in the lower actuator casing. 5. Place the spring plate on top of the springs so that the stamped bosses are nested in the springs. 5. Line up the boltholes in the diaphragm with the holes in the lower actuator casing. 6. Place the springs on the spring plate nested over the punched bosses. 7. Place the upper actuator casing on the diaphragm, lining up the boltholes. 8. Replace four bolts and nuts 90 apart and finger tighten. Replace the remainder of the bolts and nuts, tighten evenly, and alternate across the actuator case. 6. Place the diaphragm on the spring plate, lining up the boltholes with the lower casing. 7. Place the seal washer on the diaphragm and bolt together with the actuator stem bolt and seal ring. 8. Place the upper actuator casing on top. Replace four bolts and nuts 90 apart and finger tighten. Replace the remainder of the bolts and nuts, tighten evenly, and alternate across the actuator case. 6

7 Valve Reassembly 1. Install stem o-ring seal in bonnet recess. 2. Insert plug through bonnet. 3. Install body seal. 4. Fit bonnet to valve body and fasten using body clamp. 5. Fit valve body sub-assembly to actuator yoke by inserting plug stem into snap connector and fitting yoke pillars to bonnet plate. 6. If necessary apply air to lift the actuator stem to make assembly easier. 7. Refit the yoke nuts using a suitable locking compound. Actuator Adjustment Do not apply more than 50PSIG to the actuator. The preload tension on the actuator should be adjusted so that the valve plug begins to lift at the correct signal pressure when the full process pressure is acting upon the plug. (Air to Open valve) Adjusting Preload 1. With full process pressure acting on the valve, connect the air signal to the actuator and note at what signal pressure the valve plug begins to lift. 2. If plug lifts below the lower signal limit (3 or 6 PSIG depending upon range) screw valve stem out of the actuator stem. Apply air to the actuator so that the plug is not turning on the seat while making the adjustment. 3. If the plug does not lift until significantly over the lower signal limit screw the valve stem further into the actuator stem 4. Adjust the valve stem until the valve is shut off at 3 PSI signal but lifts just above this pressure. 5. Once adjustment is complete lock valve stem position using the two stem nuts. Note: A valve that has been set to lift at 3 PSI with full process pressure will lift at a considerably higher start pressure when the process pressure is removed. 7

8 Troubleshooting Erratic Control Oversizing causes cycling or hunting recalculate size required Check operation of steam traps and or relief valves down stream Check that valve moves freely over its entire stroke. Check inlet pressure does not droop excessively under load Insufficient flow Ensure isolation valves are open fully Check upstream pressure Blow down strainers Check control valve opens fully. Could be insufficient signal pressure of diaphragm problem Valve Passing Check actuator preload adjustment Check for foreign matter in seat Check for seat/plug damage 8
