1. Overview Read the entire instructions carefully before commencing the valve installation and start-up work. Keep the instructions in the proximity of the valve for the easy access by the valve operators. The warranty only covers manufacturing and material faults. Danfoss takes no responsibility for any damage caused by improper installation, maintenance or storage. 2. General Danfoss butterfly valves type SBFV, are shut off and control valves developed for District Heating and District Cooling networks. Danfoss Butterfly Valves type SBFV can be used for the following media: - water - hot water - glycolic water up to 50% If the valve is to be operated under deviating operating conditions and in other fields of application, the manufacturer should be consulted. 2.1 Safety These operating and maintenance instructions have to be observed at all times. It is not allowed for the user to modify the product or the mounting parts/fittings supplied with it. Danfoss does not assume any warranty or liability for consequential damage arising from the non-compliance with these instructions. Before removing safety devices and/or carrying out work on the valve, the pipe section should be pressureless, leaving no risk. Unauthorized, unintentional and unexpected operation as well as dangerous movement caused by stored energy (compressed air, pressurized fluids) should be avoided. Before dismantling the valve, the pipeline should be completely emptied. Installation, maintenance and other activities performed on the valve should be done only by qualified and specially trained personnel. For further specifications and information such as dimensions, materials and fields of applications, please refer to the related documentations (SBFV Data Sheet) VI.IX.A1.02 Danfoss
2.2 Proper use Danfoss SBFV Butterfly Valves are designed for installation in the pipelines. The technical application limits (e.g. working pressure, medium, temperature etc.) are described in the product-related documentation (SBFV Data Sheet). The standard model can be used to allow the flow of the medium in one direction in pressurized pipelines and to prevent the back-flow. Danfoss SBFV butterfly valve should be used in media in which there is no risk of clogging. To keep a good sealing and avoid damage of seal, fluid should not contain hard solid particulates. For any deviating operating conditions and applications the user should obtain the manufacturer s prior written approval. 4 Danfoss VI.IX.A1.02
3. Transportation and storage 3.1 Transportation During transportation, the valve should be stable and protected with special packaging (e.g. container, special pallets) and should have its disk slightly opened (10 ). The packaging also needs to ensure that the valve is protected against weather influences and damage. When the valve is transported long distance (e.g. overseas) and exposed to special climatic conditions, it needs to be protected by sealing it in plastic wrapping and adding a desiccant. 3.2 Receiving During the receiving inspection, check that the valve and its accessories are free from any transportation-induced damage. 3.3 Storage During storage, the valve should be protected against sand, dust and any other impurities. Avoid long-term storage of the valve outdoors exposed to the effects of rain, sunlight or frost. When hoisting the valve, always use lifting straps threaded through the lifting lugs and around the valve s upper neck (see picture 1: method A and B). Hoisting the valve with the lifting straps threaded around the actuator is forbidden (see picture 1: method C). Use special caution when hoisting, transporting and installing the valve. The actuator s centre of gravity may deviate from the valve centre line. This may tilt the valve and actuator during lifting. Even minor impacts may damage the actuator or change the actuator s or valve s adjustments. Method A Method B Method C Picture 1: Methods of lifting the valve Take the weight of the valve into account when handling it. VI.IX.A1.02 Danfoss
4. Installation in the pipeline 4.1 General installation instructions Incorrect installation may result in serious personal injury as well as malfunction of the equipment. These instructions should therefore be followed carefully when installing the valve. These instructions do not cover all possible operating scenarios. For any specific operating condition guidance, please contact the manufacturer Site requirements The installation of the valve in the pipeline should be a stress-free as possible. When work is done in the valve area which may cause dirt (e.g. painting, erection of brick walls or concrete work) the valve should be protected by a suitable cover. Before the valve is installed, it should be checked for any transport or storage damage. While being stored on the construction site before its installation, the valve should be protected against dirt by an appropriate cover. When the valve is installed it should be free of dirt and dust. Danfoss does not assume any liability for consequential damage caused by dirt, grit etc. Clean the pipework carefully before installing the valve. Any welding debris and other impurities remaining inside the pipework may damage the valve s shut-off surfaces at a later stage. In this connection, it is also advisable to check that the valve is free from any impurities induced by transportation and storage Place of installation The requirements for the place of installation are: - to ensure there is enough space to allow function checks. - to ensure there is enough space to allow maintenance work (e.g. dismantling and cleaning of the valve). In case of open-air installation, the valve should be protected against extreme weather conditions by covering it properly. 6 Danfoss VI.IX.A1.02
4.2 Installation of the valve with welded ends Installation into horizontal pipeline The most recommendable installation position for a butterfly valve is in a horizontal position and into horizontal pipeline (see picture 2). The butterfly valve can alternately be installed at an angle of maximal Installation into vertical pipeline Picture 2: Horizontal installation position If the valve is welded to a vertical pipeline (see picture 3), close the valve and cover the seal and disc with a water cushion of at least 40 mm. The water protects from welding spatters that may damage the seal and disc surfaces during welding. Picture 3: Vertical installation position VI.IX.A1.02 Danfoss
4.2.3 Welding procedures - The butterfly valve should be welded only by an authorized welder. - The butterfly valve should remain closed during installation and welding to ensure that welding residue does not damage the seal surfaces. - The ends of the pipes should be parallel to the valve and correctly aligned. - The valve should be as long as the distance between pipe ends, taking into consideration the welding gaps. - The inner diameter of the pipes should be the same as the inner diameter of the ends of the butterfly valve. - The main flow direction should be the same as the recommended flow direction of the valve. During welding the ground should be connected to the pipeline. It is not allowed to connect the ground to the valve neck, actuator flange or actuator. 4.3 Installation of the valve with flanged connections When the valve is installed between pipeline flanges, the flanges should be plane-parallel and in true alignment. Misaligned pipelines should be put into a true alignment position before the valve is installed. Otherwise the body may be exposed to impermissibly high loads and strain during operation which may even cause the body to break. The butterfly valve should be installed only by authorized personnel. The valve should remain closed during installation to ensure that any residue or dirt doesn t damage the sealing faces. The valve should be as long as the distance between the flanges in the pipeline, taking into consideration the gasket. The flanges in the pipeline should be compatible with valve flanges. The bolts and nuts used for installation should be selected to match operating conditions. Bolts and nuts should also fulfill requirements of the pressure, temperature, flange material and gasket. For detailed information please refer to standards EN , EN and EN The gasket used on installation should be selected to match operating conditions, temperature, pressure and medium. Gasket dimensions should be compatible with sealing faces of the flanges. For detailed information please refer to the standard EN The main flow direction should be the same as the recommended flow direction of the valve. The recommended installation position for the butterfly valve is at an angle or with the shafts in the horizontal position. 8 Danfoss VI.IX.A1.02
Between the butterfly valve and an inspection valve, an elbow, T-pieces and Y-filters should be provided minimal distance of 3xDN. Otherwise irregular flow may disturb the proper function of the valve. When installing a butterfly valve downstream of a control valve or a plunger valve, make sure that there is enough space between them (min. 10xDN). For alternative installation position, please contact and consult with the manufacturer. VI.IX.A1.02 Danfoss
5. Putting the valve into operation 5.1 Visual inspection Visual inspection of the valve and its equipment, especially all functional parts, should be conducted prior to putting the valve into operation. All screwed connections need to be checked as to whether they are tightly fastened. 5.2 Function check and pressure test Before the installation of the valve, its function parts (disk) should be completely opened and closed at least once and their proper running should be tested. When closed, the butterfly valve should only be exposed to pressures not exceeding its nominal pressure. Pressure tests during which the pipeline is filled in flow (opening) direction are unproblematic. 5.3 Start-up Flush the pipework thoroughly once the valve installation has been completed. All valves delivered to customer passed the hydro test at the factory; however it is necessary to check that there are no faults due to transportation and handling. Make sure that the valve-actuator combination functions without problems prior to the start-up procedure. Always close the valve using the actuators mechanical travel stops; stay below the maximum torque limit. Avoid the use of excessive force in closing as this cannot improve that valve s tightness. A valve provided with an electric actuator should always be opened electrically, with the travel limit serving as the closing limit. In an emergency, you may open and close the valve by turning the electric actuator hand wheel. In these cases, however, observe that the hand wheel s closing limit has been set to turn the valve disc 2-3 hand wheel revolutions beyond the optimal closed positions. This means that the optimal tightness is achieved by turning the hand wheel 2-3 revolutions in the opening direction, starting from the gear s mechanical closing limit. 10 Danfoss VI.IX.A1.02
6. Maintenance and servicing 6.1 General safety instructions Prior to any inspection and maintenance work to be performed on the valve or mounted parts and attachments, the pressurized pipeline should be shut off, the pressure should be relieved and the system should be secured against unintentional switching on. Depending on the kind and criticality of the medium or fluid conveyed, all the required safety regulations must complied with! Upon completion of the maintenance work and prior to resuming operation, all connections should be checked for proper fastening and leak-freeness. 6.2 Inspection intervals The leak-freeness, smooth operation and corrosion protection of the valve should be checked at least once per year. Under extreme operating conditions, inspection needs to be done at shorter intervals. The body seals can be replaced, if required, depending on the type of fluid conveyed. 6.3 Maintenance and replacement of parts Danfoss valves are durable and dependable. An appropriately selected and carefully installed valve will not require maintenance during its life cycle. Leakage from the valve s shut-off surfaces is often caused by wear and tear, pipework impurities or damage resulting from pressure impacts. Impurities can be removed by opening the valve and allowing the flow to flush the shut-off surfaces clean. Probability of hydro-stress can be excluded by using by-pass valves. The scope of maintenance and repair work consists of: - Cleaning of internal surfaces. - Replacement of main gasket. - Tightening or replacement of shaft sealing. If the pipeline is not under pressure, this work can be performed online. For the rest of the repair works, the valve should be taken away from the line. VI.IX.A1.02 Danfoss
6.4 Manual gear removal and installation Avoid removing the actuator from the valve. Actuator has been calibrated at the factory and if removed, the actuator may have to be re-calibrated. Removal of manual gear: - Close the valve fully with the handwheel. - Mark the manual gear in relation to the valve - Turn out bolts between actuator and valve - Take out actuator - Remove parallel key Installation of manual gear: - Make sure that the valve is in closed position. - Place parallel keys. - Install manual gear in original position. Attach the manual gear to the valve. 6.5 Other actuators For detailed instructions concerning actuator removal, installation and adjustment, contact the valve s supplier or manufacturer. 6.6 Tightening the valve shaft seal Tightening the valve shaft seal is included in regular maintenance. Avoid excessive tightening. The sufficient tightness level is reached when the leakage stops. The tensions screws are indicated by number 17 in the exploded view attached. Prior to commencing the replacement procedure, check that the pipework is pressure-free. The components referred to in the disassembly and installation instructions are set out in the exploded view contained in Appendix. 12 Danfoss VI.IX.A1.02
Disassembling: - Remove the actuator as instructed above. (Section 6.4). - Remove parallel key (12). - Remove screws that are holding the gland (15). - Remove gland (9). - Remove O rings (18) with sealing bush (8). - Remove gland packing (6).
