1 INSTRUCTION MANUAL INSTALLING NEW GREASE IN UT SERIES PNEUMATIC ACTUATOR This instruction manual explains the steps required to degrease and install new grease into the Max-Air UT series pneumatic actuator. This modification is typically required in order to change actuator seals from standard to low temperature service. Please note this manual does not address the change out of the seals or wear parts. Step 1 Remove the end cap (and springs if applicable) on the side without the travel stops. Step 2 Remove the end cap (and springs if applicable) on the side with the travel stops. See Pictures Next Page

2 This is what the result should look like: Note: It is always a good idea to use an air impact gun with the proper metric drive head to remove the end cap bolts from the actuator body. Loosen opposite sides following a criss-cross pattern.

3 Step 3 Remove beacon on the top of the actuator by removing the C clip. Step 4 Using a crescent wrench, slowly rotate the pinion counter-clockwise (when looking from above) until you feel the teeth on the pinion disengage from the rack of the pistons. You will notice that the pistons will slightly protrude out from the end of the actuator. Step 5 With a pair of pliers, gently pull the pistons out of each side of the actuator. Check to ensure that the seals of the actuator are in good working condition. See picture next page

4 Step 6 Remove the bottom flange and pinion. Be careful to keep track of all component parts, seals, and wear bearings. Check to ensure that the seals on the pinion are in good working condition. Step 7 - Degrease all components of the actuator. This is best accomplished by applying mineral spirits, sparingly, to a rag and thoroughly wiping off the grease. Start by wiping the bore of the actuator. Then degrease the pistons out of the actuator, paying special attention to the teeth and the edges of the piston (where the o-rings are located). Follow on by degreasing the pinion, paying special attention to the teeth and the wear bearing areas. Ensure that as much grease is removed as reasonably possible.

5 Step 7 Cont d Special notes: Since the standard temperature grease is compatible with the low temperature grease, do not worry if there is a small amount of the standard low temperature grease still present on the component parts. Try to remove as much of the standard temperature grease as possible. In some cases, it may not be necessary to remove the seals and the wear parts. It may only be required to change out the grease for low temperature service. In these cases, the seals may be left intact and installed in the actuator with the new grease. When degreasing, it is important to pay particular attention to not allow too much of the mineral spirits to come in contact with the seal. It is not necessary to remove 100% of the standard grease; it is more important for as much of the standard temperature grease to be removed, therefore it is suggested to wipe all seal and wear parts only with a clean rag, and all metal parts with a rag containing the mineral spirits. It is critically important to ensure that the low temperature grease is evenly distributed throughout the actuator before reassembly begins.

6 Step 8 Generously apply the new low temperature grease to the bore of the actuator, to the teeth on the pistons and pinions, and to all wear and seal parts. Do not glob the grease on; but generously apply to indicate parts. It is better to put too much grease than too little. If there are questions about how much grease to apply, please call the factory for more details. It is recommended to use a small brush to apply the new low temperature grease. Pay special attention to coat all of the internal surfaces where the piston will be sliding when pressurized. ** See example pictures of grease quantity on the next page Step 9 Reassemble actuator according to normal procedure.
