1 1 Porsche PCM 3.1 Backup Camera Installation Instructions. Thank you for purchasing your product at Before you start please understand that these installation instructions are provided on a as is basis use at your own risk. Maxspeed-Motorsports will not be responsible for any damages or bodily injuries that can be caused by improper installation of our products. As always professional installation is recommended. Never go underneath your car if using a floor jack without securing it with jack stands first. Tools & Materials Needed Various Tools (Plastic Pry Tool Kit) Torx Bits with ratchet or Torx screwdriver kit Ratchet Kit Fishing tool (i.e steel rod coat hanger or similar) THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS BELOW HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY MAXSPEED-MOTORSPORTS LLC, AFTER INSTALLING QUITE A FEW BACKUP CAMERAS WE DESCRIBE BELOW HOW WE PROCEED WITH THE INSTALLATION. THIS GUIDE SHOULD BE USED AS A REFERENCE. OTHERS MAY USE A DIFFERENT TECHNIQUE OR HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS ON HOW TO PROCEED WITH THE INSTALLATION. THAT BEING SAID READ THE ENTIRE GUIDE BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE INSTALLATION. GO THROUGH THE STEPS BELOW BY LOOKING AT WHAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED PRIOR TO INSTALLING THIS KIT IF YOU FEEL THAT THIS IS TO CHALLENGING FOR YOU HAVE IT DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL. 2 2 IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE DON T HESITATE TO DO SO, YOU CAN TEXT OR CALL IMPORTANT NOTES BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE INSTALLATION 1. WE RECOMMEND YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHEN WORKING WITH ELECTRONICS, IN THIS CASE INSTALLING THE BACKUP CAMERA KIT INVOLVES THE PCM RADIO MODULE, THE EMULATOR MODULE THAT COMES WITH YOR BACKUP CAMERA KIT. THE EMULATOR IS VERY SENSITIVE TO SUDDEN VOLTAGE SPIKES THAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CONNECT THE PCM HARNESS WITH EMULATOR. ONCE YOU HAVE CONNECTED THE HARNESS ADAPTER BEHIND THE PCM RADIO ITS OK TO CONNECT YOUR BATTERY AND FINISHING THE REST OF THE INSTALLATION. 2. IF YOU DECIDE NOT TO DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY YOU RUN THE RISK OF DAMAGING THE EMULATOR MODULE. 3. ONCE THE HARNESS ADAPTER IS CONNECTED BEHIND THE RADIO (AFTER STEP10 BELOW) YOU CAN CONNECT THE BATTERY AND MOVE FORWARD WITH THE REST OF THE INSTALLATION. 4. BEFORE ROUTING THE VIDEO CABLE ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK AND REMOVING ALL THE TRIMS IT S BEST TO TEST THE SETUP. THAT MEANS REMOVE THE PCM AND INSTALL THE CAMERA KIT TO VERIFY THAT EVERYTHING WORKS. AGAIN, TEST IT BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE COMPLETE INSTALLATION. THIS IS TO PREVENT HAVING TO REMOVE ALL TRIMS ONCE MORE IF A PROBLEM SHOULD OCCUR.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO TAPE ALL THE CONNECTIONS, THERE WILL BE 4 CONNECTIONS TO TAPE, WE ARE REFERRING TO THE RCA VIDEO CONNECTION BEHIND THE PCM AND AT THE CAMERA (YELLOW BANANA JACKS) AND FINALLY THE 2 REMAINING CONNECTIONS NEXT TO THE YELLOW RCA BANANA JACKS, BEHIND THE RADIO AND AT THE CAMERA. The instructions below and illustrations are based on the 981 Cayman and are the same for all 981 s and 991 s up to step 11. For 981 Boxster, 911 Coupe and 911 Convertible go to Step 19. PLEASE REFER TO THE PICTURE BELOW FOR THE PARTS INCLUDED IN YOUR BACKUP CAMERA KIT.

4 4 LEFT: CAMERA WITH BUILT-IN LICENSE PLATE LIGHT - MIDDLE: VIDEO AND POWER CABLE - RIGHT: PCM HARNESS WITH PCM EMULATOR SEE DIAGRAM BELOW ON HOW THE SYSTEM CONNECTS ALL TOGETHER ASSUMING YOU HAVE VERSION 4.3 UP FOR YOUR PCM 3.1 PROCEED WITH INSTALLATION. (PRESS SOURCE AND INFO AT THE SAME TIME TO VERIFY VERSIONS) Step 1- FOR PDK OWNER S You will need to disconnect the battery. Before you disconnect the battery Put the key to ON position (Engine Off) put the PDK Selector to D, you won t be able to remove the key but turn back one position to ACC make sure your front and rear lids are opened, passenger door unlocked, parking brake applied and rear spoiler raised on all models 981/991 (all variants that have a spoiler that

5 5 can be raised). Once you have done all of that disconnect the battery. FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION OWNER S. Manual transmissions don t need a key in the ignition to move the shift stick so before disconnecting the battery make sure your front and rear lids are opened, passenger door unlocked, parking brake applied and rear spoiler raised, now disconnect the battery. Step 2- Remove the side center console trims (Left and Right) with proper tool, we recommend Plastic Pry Tools to avoid any scratches or damage to the trims. Simply slide the tool between the trim and center console and pop the trim unclip it completely, once unclipped pull trim back toward back of the car, the trims should now be out of the way.

10 10 Step 4- You now need to pull out the PCM Radio, start by removing the 4 Torx Screws, once removed pull out the PCM Radio and disconnect all connections, please note that diagrams below may show various connectors that your car may not be equipped with. (Use some towels or rags to protect your AC Panel)

12 12 Step 5- At this point you are ready to install the Wiring Harness Adapter that you received with your Backup Camera Kit. Now depending on the type of Sound System your Car came with, for example if you have the Bose Sound System you will have a Fiber Optic Connection, you can easily identify the connection by looking behind the factory wiring adapter that you unplugged from your PCM, the big black connector, if you have a fiber optic connection you will see 2 Orange Plastic wires (They are actually plastic tubes) or you may have Green ones (we have seen green colored ones as well). If you do have the fiber optic connection you will need to carefully pull out the connector from the harness, simply raise the clip (Red Arrow on Picture) and pull out the connector.

13 13 You will need to transfer the Fiber Optic Connection to the new Harness Adapter, there is a slot behind the adapter you received, it will only fit one way. See Red Arrow on picture below.

14 14 Step 6- Install the New Wiring Adapter to the Porsche PCM Harness, I m referring to the wiring harness you disconnected from the back of the PCM Radio, one end of the adapter will install on the factory harness and one end will be connected to the back of the PCM Radio, basically the adapter will now be fitted between the Porsche factory PCM harness and the PCM Radio. At this time just connect it to the Factory Wiring Harness only, do not connect the other end to the radio yet. Step 7- Remove the door sill, Wall Trim and Fusebox cover trim (Pictures show driver s side, but you must remove these parts on the passenger s side only. SHOWN FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES IS THE RIGHT SIDE HOWEVER YOU MUST REMOVE THE FOLLOWING 2 TRIMS ON THE PASSENGER S SIDE.

15 15 The fuse panel is held by A: Velcro, B: Clip C: Clip carefully pull the fuse box trim out.

16 16 Co py rig ht M ax sp e ed -M ot or sp or ts.c om Step 8- Grab the carpet by reaching out at the edge of the carpet at the very top (underneath the dash) and pull out the carpet carefully, I am referring to the permanent carpeting and not the floor mats, this will uncover the metal frame, simply pull it out enough to allow the wiring of the backup camera to be hidden behind the carpet Step 9- At this point you are halfway there, we will now start the installation of the Video Cable that will run from the PCM all the way back to the license plate light. Your Harness Adapter is installed by now (Step 6) notice that you have a wire with a Terminal at the end of it, and the RCA Cable you will need to connect them to the Black Cable Harness that has the matching terminal and RCA Jack, route that cable via the opening where the air vent trim was removed (See Step 3) connect the RCA Jack and the terminal wire.

17 17 Step 10- Its time to install the PCM Back, connect all connection to the back of the PCM Radio. With the addition of the Harness you installed it may be difficult to slide the PCM back in, this is due to the limited space there is behind the PCM Radio. If you re lucky it may slide right in. Chances are you will have to fiddle with it several times to hit the correct spot this is how we do it: The best method that worked for us when we install them at our shop is to slide the PCM in until you feel resistance, at that point use a long screwdriver to push the Harness up, the screwdriver will need to be inserted where you routed the cables to make the connections (where the trim was removed on Step 3),Use the screwdriver to push the harness up and sliding the PCM back in. This should do the trick. You can now secure the PCM with the 4 screws you previously removed. Step 11- Once your PCM is fitted, you will now route the RCA cable behind the carpet you pulled and continue routing it under the door sill. Step 12- For Step 12 to Step 18 will be FOR CAYMAN 981 only. All others skip to Step 19. You will need to remove the Pillar Trim that covers the seatbelt retractor (Passenger s Side only)

19 19 Step 13- You need to route the cable behind those trims you removed (see above), and continue routing it underneath the trim in the engine cover area (without removing this trim) again don t remove this trim just slide the cable underneath this trim Step 14- Remove the following 2 trims. (Remove the passenger s side) shown is driver s side for illustration purposes.

21 21 Step 15- Remove the screw that retains the tail light and remove the tail light. The screw is hidden behind the rubber grommet. Remove the tail light by using your screwdriver to push it out (see picture below) or you can use a plastic pry tool to insert the tool between the body quarter panel and light and carefully pry it out without damaging the light or quarter panel. Disconnect tail light and set aside.

23 23 Step 16- You will now need to route the cable through the opening where you accessed the bolt to remove the tail light, now the cable should be in the tail light compartment. Step 17- Remove the factory license plate light housing on the right side (Passenger s side), disconnect the factory connector. Store this license plate light as it will no longer be used. Step 18- Your final step is to route the cable through the opening at the corner of the bumper it will be a tight fit, you may want to remove the torx screw that retains the corner of the bumper so that you have more

24 24 play. With a fishing tool (a metal coat hanger will do since its flexible and long enough) through the opening at the corner of the bumper right next to the spoiler insert fishing tool and have it come out the license plate light opening, now tape the rca cable to the fishing tool and slowly route it behind the bumper by pulling on the fishing tool on the license plate side. This should bring your cables out of the license plate opening. Grab the camera assembly, connect the license plate light connector, connect the RCA Cable and connect the Power Cable. You may want to zip tie the excessive wires in a loop, install the camera in the license plate opening, make sure it snaps in. There may be a little even when snapped in, that is normal play but make sure it snaps in, you can hear it click if you listen carefully. That s it your done. Reinstall all your trims, test the camera. Step 19- For 981 Boxster Owner s, 911 Coupe and 911 Convertible the techniques below is how we do our installations however the point is to get the cable to the rear at the license plate light. You may have better way or your own way to route that cable. FOR 981 BOXSTER At this point your RCA Cable should be routed up to the end of the door sill, by removing the seatbelt cover trim and by partially pulling the carpet on the engine wall you will need to fish the cable in the convertible bed area, put your top in service position (refer to your owner s manual) once in service position route the cable under the plastic trims in the convertible roof area. Remove the Oil Filler Cap Cover trim (accessed in the trunk area) you will see openings through the firewall, pull the carpet and route the cable trough that firewall opening and route your cable under the trim you just removed for the oil cap. Now go back to Step 14 starting at the 2nd picture and move forward with the installation all the way to Step 18.

25 25 FOR 991 COUPE OWNER S At this point your RCA Cable should be routed up to the end of the door sill, now how we proceed with installations. Below your rear window at the very end against the firewall that separates the interior from the engine there is a trim that runs all along the bottom part under the rear window, pull out that trim, pry tools will work great for removal, grasp the edge and pull the trim out. Now without removing any other trims route the cable behind the rear quarter panel trim, insert the wire between the carpet and the trim and push the cable in with your fingers, there is the bottom cushion of the seats that won t allow you to route that cable, pull on it gently to make some room for the cable you don t have to remove the entire bottom cushion, simply grasp the edge of the bottom seat and raise upwards this will allow some room. If you prefer removing the entire bottom seats this will require much more work if you decide to do so. Now make sure you route the cable above the pivot point of the seat, work your way to the rear pillar trim and slide the cable underneath that trim. At this point you are ready to access the engine bay, you will see a wiring loom thats goes trough the firewall, we make a hole in that rubber cover to fish the wire on the engine bay side. You will need to have that RCA cable come out of that rubber loom on the engine bay side. Raise your spoiler Open the rear trunk lid, remove the Dual Fan assembly, its simply pushed in, no screws simply pull on the assembly carefully it will come out, disconnect the fan connectors and set aside. Remove the plastic trim that partially covers the wiring harness that comes through the firewall. Now that you have access to that wiring loom that is covered with that rubber sleeve we make a small incision to have the cable out of that loom once out and pulled completely we then tape the rubber sleeve where the incision was made with a good quality tape. Now at this point remove the passenger s side tail light, there is a black cover above the tail light, pop that cover with pry tools this will uncover torx screws, remove screws, remove tail light, disconnect tail light and set aside. Route the RCA cable in the engine bay area secure the

26 26 cable with Zip Ties there are plenty of spots where you can zip tie the RCA cable, bring that cable to the tail light arear. Go back to STEP 17 and complete your installation. FOR 991 CONVERTIBLE OWNER S At this point your RCA Cable should be routed up to the end of the door sill, now this is how we proceed with installations. You will need to get the rca cable to the convertible bed area, this is a challenging task, pull the seats down and remove the rear carpeted panel against the firewall. Route the RCA cable behind the rear quarter panel trim, insert the wire between the carpet and the trim and push the cable in with your fingers, there is the bottom cushion of the seats that won t allow you to tuck that wire behind the quarter panel trim, gently pull it up on the edge next to the quarter panel and hold the bottom cushion up, this will make some room for you to pass your RCA Cable. Now make sure you route the cable above the pivot point of the seat behind the quarter panel trim. You will need to pass the cable to the convertible bed area this will require some skills to get through that firewall, its not impossible but by prying a few plastic trims you will get that cable trough via a small opening. Once in the convertible bed area, pass the cable under the plastic trims. We don t make any holes through the firewall to get that RCA cable in the engine bay, we pull the rubber weatherstrip out just pulling a small section of it and we notch the edge of the frame (where the rubber seal sits on) with a filing tool so that the rubber seal can be put back with no interference and the notch will prevent the cable from being cut or damaged. Raise your spoiler Open the rear trunk lid, remove the Dual Fan assembly, its simply pushed in, no screws simply pull on the assembly carefully it will come out, disconnect the fan connectors and set aside. At this point remove the passenger s side tail light, there is a black cover above the tail light, pop that cover with pry tools this will uncover torx screws, remove screws, remove tail light, disconnect tail light and set aside. Route the RCA cable in the engine bay area secure the cable with Zip Ties there are plenty of spots where you can zip tie the RCA cable,

27 27 bring that cable to the tail light. Go back to STEP 17 and complete your installation CODING INSTRUCTIONS WHEN DONE WITH A PORSCHE PIWIS SCANNER. Visit your Porsche Dealer or Indy Shop who is equipped with Porsche Piwis Scanner. PCM 3.1 must be coded to accept the backup camera. Boot Piwis, select your model (i.e 981/991/Panamera/Macan), Scan all modules, select PCM Module, Erase any present Fault Codes, some codes may remain in memory and cannot be erased that s fine it s very common to have random errors when scanning PCM. Now click Coding > Manual Coding > Click F12 > Select Reversing Camera or Rear Park Assist + Camera depending on the PCM Version sometimes the Reversing Camera Option will not show up alone if that s the case you have to select rear park assist + reverse camera make sure the box is checked > Select F8 and code. Exit from Piwis Scanner. Power PCM, push CAR Button then Options Then SET CAR and you should see the backup camera settings. Congrats your PCM is now coded.
