5 INSTALLATION MOUNTING TO THE CARRIAGE The carriages in both the size 80 and 110 actuators have 8 mm T-slots. When mounting a plate to the carriage, be sure that the plate is flat to insure a complete mating surface. If the plate is not flat, or if the bolts are too long, this action could induce a bending moment into the outside of the T-slots on the carriage. This could result in a premature failure in the carriage and an unsafe condition. Where possible, Bimba recommends using full-length T-bars when mounting to the carriage. (This is especially true when using the actuators in either a vertical application or supporting the actuator by the carriage.) Consult Bimba for part numbers and application data. MOUNTING THE ACTUATOR Support of the linear actuator should only be on the aluminum extrusion body; never put supports under the drive end or the take-up end. These components could misalign the belt system and cause premature failure of the linear actuator. The body should be fully supported if practical. For long strokes, support the actuator body at least every meter. The linear actuator aluminum bodies are provided with 8 or 10mm wide extruded slots for mounting. The body can be easily clamped down to the supporting plate by means of the optional clamps. Size 80 actuators use the clamp #CL and the size 110 actuators use the clamp #CL T SLOTS Many T-nuts, T-bolts, and other accessories from BOSCH Automation will fit the T-slots on the 110 size actuators. 80 size has new top slots. 6 INSTALLATION MOUNTING A MOTOR Actuators provided with gear reducers typically include a motor mounting adapter and shaft pinion. Follow the instructions provided with the pinion for proper motor installation. All other methods of driving the input shaft should include the use of a high quality flexible coupling. Hard coupling directly to the actuator shaft can cause excess wear and could cause a failure of the actuator. NOTE: Bimba recommends the use of motors with a properly sized fail-safe brake on all vertical applications. MOUNTING TO THE EZ MOUNT 1. Mount reducer and/or motor to the actuator using its bolts. 2. With the motor shaft engaged in the drive shaft, tighten the SHCS bolt on the clamp collar through the hole in the drive end plate. 3. After the clamp collar is securely holding the reducer and/or the motor shaft, remove the lock bolt holding the clamp collar. 4. Store this bolt in the hole beside it (used for tightening the clamp collar) in case removal is required. Lock Bolt holding Clamp Collar in place until Motor is installed Hole to access the Clamp Collar SHCS Bolt to tighten the Drive Shaft to the Motor/Reducer Shaft Motor and/or Gear Reducer Mounting Plate Drive Shaft Input for Motor or Reducer Shaft MAXIMUM INPUT DIAMETER B80: 1.00 (25.4mm) ST80: 1.00 (25.4mm) B110: 1.25 (31.8mm) B27: (16mm) B40: (20mm) ALIGNMENTS Care should be taken when aligning linear actuators with a moving machine component. Make sure that any bending or twisting of the actuator from other machine components is eliminated or minimized in reference to the linear actuator. 6
7 MAINTENANCE GENERAL General maintenance of the linear actuators is to keep the actuator belt clean to keep dirt from accumulating inside the actuator. Inspection of the actuator, clamps, tee bolts, mounting hardware, and other parts should be done periodically to insure proper alignment and that the operation did not change from the initial installation. LUBRICATION With the new Self-Lubricant Linear Guideway for Increased Life The latest design incorporates a linear bearing that has a self-lubricated feature that allows a travel of 20,000 km OR 5 years life for the bearings before re-lubrication is required. The newest design does not have any lubrication holes in the side of the extrusion. If your actuator has a serial numbers B to B and/or B to B , do not use grease. Use only oil as instructed below. The linear guide blocks are of the self-lubricant type. These blocks require oil installed into the side of the block through the side access hole on the side of the extrusion. Simply remove the plug in the extrusion and drive the carriage to the middle, align the oil PLUG in the SIDE of the EXTRUSION to be removed for LUBRICATION fitting with the access hole in the block side, remove the setscrew, and install the oil directly into the block. Lubrication for these linear bearings is recommended at least every 10,000 km of travel. Previous Linear Actuators Lubrication is recommended for the linear bearings at least every 100 km of travel. Extreme operating conditions (high temperatures, high speeds, heavy loading) require more frequent and/or different lubrication. The actuator carriages are designed to distribute the grease to the linear bearings through channels and fittings internal to the actuator. A grease fitting is supplied on either side of the carriage for lubrication. This fitting has a M6 thread and a needle nose ball detent interface to your grease gun. Grease is recommended at linear speeds up to 3 meters per second and oil lubrication above 3 meters per second. The maximum speed of the actuators should be 5 meters per second. Consult Bimba for application data. Grease should be a lithium-based lubricant. The amount of re-lubrication of grease is 5 cm 3 per bearing block. Oil should be cst with a feeding rate of 0.3 cm 3 /hour per bearing block. Review your part number for the appropriate number of bearing blocks installed in your actuator. The drive and take-up pulleys use sealed, deep groove ball bearings with a lifetime lubricant so that no maintenance is required. If your unit has a built in reducer, this should be checked for heat build up and excess noise. This should indicate re-lubrication requirements only. 7
8 MAINTENANCE BELT TENSIONING The Belt driven linear actuators are pre-tensioned at the factory. Field adjustments should not be required. If the actuator is disassembled or the belt needs tensioned after replacement, please contact Bimba for proper tension procedures. BELT ALIGNMENT AND ASSEMBLY The cover at the take-up end should be removed. Looking down into the side plates, there are two (2) setscrews holding the slide plates in the locked position. Loosen these four setscrews (2 on both sides) and loosen the 6mm SHCS on the end plate of the take-up. Setscrews 6mm SHCS in the END PLATE for the TAKE-UP DEVICE Remove the 8mm SHCS on the carriage to remove the belt. 8mm SHCS on the CARRIAGE which holds the BELT After removal of the old belt, reinstall the pulley with the sliders into the slots of the take-up mechanism. Pulley Sliders installed onto the take-up pulley shaft 8
9 MAINTENANCE BELT ALIGNMENT AND ASSEMBLY, CONTINUED Feed the new belt back through the pulleys, making sure to have the proper teeth engagement. Install the end plate. Look for the proper tooth engagement of the belt and pulley Reattach the belt to the carriage and using the Belt Tensioning Mechanism to tighten the belt to the proper tension. Run the actuator back and forth and insure that the belt is tracking correctly. Install and lock the setscrews in the side plates to hold the sliders from moving. Remove the Tensioning Mechanism and install the 6mm SCHS at the take-up end plate. Replace covers. 9
