1 WARNING This body lift kit should only be installed on vehicles in good working condition. Before installation, the vehicle should be thoroughly inspected for evidence of corrosion or deformation of the sheet metal around the factory body mounts. This body lift kit should not be installed on any vehicle that is suspected to have been in a collision or misused. Off road use of your vehicle with this body lift installed may increase the stress applied to the factory body mounts. We do not recommend that any vehicle with a body lift installed be involved in any extreme off road maneuvers such as jumping. Failure to observe this warning may result in serious personal injury and/or severe damage to your vehicle TOYOTA TACOMA 4WD, TRD 2WD INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS - KIT #5573 WARNING Installation of a Performance Accessories body lift will change the center of gravity and the handling characteristics of the vehicle. Because of the higher center of gravity and larger tires, the vehicle will handle and react differently both on and off road. You must drive it safely! Extreme care must be taken to prevent vehicle rollover or loss of control, which could result in serious injury or death. Avoid sudden sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers and always make sure all vehicle occupants have their seat belts fastened. WARNING Read and understand all instructions, warnings, cautions, and notes in this sheet and in your owners manual before you begin the installation of this body lift kit. CAUTION Proper installation of a Performance Accessories body lift kit requires knowledge of the factory recommended procedures for disassembly and assembly of original equipment components. We recommend that the factory shop manual and any special tools necessary to your vehicle be on hand during the installation. Installation of this body lift kit without proper knowledge of the factory recommended procedures may affect the performance of these components and the safety of your vehicle. We strongly recommend that a certified mechanic familiar with the installation of similar components install this body lift kit. WARNING Performance Accessories strongly discourages the use of a suspension lift kit or any other lift device in addition to a body lift kit. A vehicle that uses a combination of lift devices not originally engineered to be used together may result in unexpected and unsafe handling characteristics. Many states now have laws restricting bumper heights and vehicle lifts. Local laws should be consulted to determine if the changes you intend to make to your vehicle comply with state laws. WARNING The installation of larger wheel and tire combinations may reduce the effectiveness of the Anti-lock Braking System. WARNING We will not warranty any damage to the a/c system. WARNING Always wear eye protection when operating power tools. WARNING Ensure that your vehicle tires are properly blocked and secured before you begin installation of this lift kit. WARNING To ensure the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS, or air bag) is not accidentally deployed during lift kit installation, always ground yourself and the vehicle. Do not use power or pneumatic tools. Exercise extreme caution while working near SRS sensors and wiring. Do not allow anyone near air bags during lift kit installation. Accidental deployment can result in serious personal injury or death. NOTE Performance Accessories recommends using the Loctite supplied in the kit on all hardware unless noted in the instructions. 1

2 A. Before you start. NOTE As you read through this procedure, note that each part referenced has the same callout number throughout. Also, the part number in the text matches the corresponding part number in the art. Kit parts are prefaced by the word kit in italics. NOTE You will find it easier to keep track of hardware if immediately after removal you put the fasteners for each subassembly in a paper lunch bag and write on the bag where they go. 1. Read all warnings and instructions completely and carefully before you begin. 2. Check to make sure the kit is complete (refer to the Parts List, section E). 3. Only install this kit on the vehicle for which it is intended. If anytime during the installation you encounter something different from what is outlined in the instructions, call technical support at (928) Park the vehicle on a clean, dry, flat, level surface and block the tires so the vehicle cannot roll in either direction. 5. Disconnect both battery cables. Disconnect the negative cable (1) first, then the positive cable (2) from the battery (3). 2

3 B. Get ready to install the kit. 1. Remove the front bumper. a. Remove two parking light lamps (4) from the parking lights (5). b. Remove two locknuts (6) from the front bumper (7) and front fenders (8). c. Remove two screws (9) from front bumper (7) and frame (10). d. Remove four bolts (11) and front bumper (7) from the frame (10). 3

4 2. Remove the rear bumper. a. If equipped with a hitch (12); hitch wiring (13), connectors (14), and connector mounting fasteners (15) may vary. Ensure all hitch wiring is removed before removing rear bumper (16). b. Remove two screws (17) and separate two license plate lights (18) from the rear bumper (16). c. Remove two license plate lamps (19) from lights (18). d. Remove two plastic clips (20) and harness (21) from frame (10). e. Remove four bolts (22), two nuts (23), two brackets (24), and rear bumper (16) from the frame (10). 4

5 f. Loosen four bolts (25) and remove two brackets (24) from the rear bumper (16). 3. Radiator and a/c condenser. a. Compress six clips (26) and remove grille (27) from core support (28). b. Make two 4 cuts in core support (28) as shown and cut across bottom. Ensure you do not cut a/c lines. Clean up edges of cut. c. Remove bolt (29) and battery tiedown (30) from core support (28) and driver s side wheel well (31). d. Remove cap (32) from radiator overflow bottle (33) and move aside. e. Remove radiator overflow bottle (33) from core support (28). 5

6 f. Remove four bolts (34) and radiator (35) from the core support (28). Let radiator rest on fan. g. Bend back two tabs (36) on radiator brackets (37). h. Remove two nuts (38) from core support (28) and condenser bracket (39). i. Remove bolt (40), clamp (41), and a/c line (42) from passenger side wheel well (43). j. Remove three bolts (44), two captive screws (45), and two brackets (46), from a/c condenser (47) and the core support (28). k. Remove harness (48) from horn (49), loosen bolt (50), and move horn aside. l. Lift up on and remove a/c condenser (47) from core support (28). Let drop down between radiator and support as shown. 6

7 4. Under the hood. n. Lift tab and remove harness clamp (51) from bracket (52). o. Remove tape (53) from ground wire (54). p. Remove bolt (55) and positive battery cable (2) bracket (56) from the driver s side wheel well (31). q. Remove bolt (57) and positive battery cable (2) bracket (58) from the frame (10). r. Remove bolt (59) and vacuum/electrical interface (60) from the driver s side wheel well (61). 7

8 s. Remove vacuum line (61) from two clips (62 and 63). t. Remove axle vent line (64) from clip (65). CAUTION Ensure steering shaft does not turn independently of the steering gearbox. This could cause the air bag system to malfunction, resulting in serous personal injury or damage to the equipment. 5. Remove the steering shaft. a. Straighten steering wheel and strap the wheel so it will not turn. b. Mark the steering shaft (66), rag joint (67), and rack and pinion shaft (68). c. Remove two bolts (69 and 70) from rag joint (67). d. Slide rag joint (67) up and remove from rack and pinion shaft (68) and then from steering shaft (66). 6. Remove 23 panel clips (71) and four guards (72) from driver s side wheel well (31), passenger side wheel well (43), and the frame (10). Guards will not be reused. 8

9 WARNING Use extreme caution when working near fuel lines and fuel tank. Clean up spilled fuel immediately. Any spark could cause an explosion or fire resulting in serious personal injury and property damage. 7. Remove the fuel filler. a. Remove gas cap (73). b. Remove four screws (74) and filler surround (75) from the bed (76). 8. Inside the cab. NOTE Steps 8 a. through f. are for manual transmission vehicles only. Steps 8 b. and e. pertain to 4wd vehicles where necessary. a. Remove four screws (77) and plastic tray (78) from cab floor (79). b. Unscrew two knobs (80 and 81) from gearshift lever (82) and 4wd shift lever (83). c. Remove four screws (84) and adapter plate (85) from cab floor (79). d. Press down on tab (86) around gearshift lever (82), turn lever counterclockwise and remove from transmission (87). Wrap lever in rag and remove from vehicle. 9

10 NOTE Do Step 8 e. for 4wd vehicles only. e. Squeeze c-clip (88) and remove 4wd shift lever (83) from transmission (87). Wrap lever in rag and remove from vehicle. f. Position rag over holes in transmission top. g. Remove eight screws (89), two scuff plates (90), and two kick panels (91) from cab floor (79). h. Pull back carpet (92) at cab front corners and remove two rubber caps (93). NOTE Step 8 i. for standard cab vehicles will not remove storage covers, pull back carpet only. i. Remove two storage covers (94 and 95) pull back carpet (92) on passenger s side, and remove two rubber caps (93). 10

11 C. Install the kit. 1. Prepare to lift cab from frame. WARNING Failure to replace the OEM body mounting hardware (except mounting bolts in the kit) in the stock locations could result in serious personal injury or damage to the vehicle. a. Measure distance between the cab (96) and the bed (76). Record measurement for later cab to bed alignment reference in the instructions. b. Loosen but do not remove six cab mounting bolts (97 and 98). WARNING Use extreme caution when lifting body from frame. Ensure lifting device is securely placed. Keep hands out from between frame and body, or serious personal injury could result. CAUTION Continually check hoses, wires, lines, etc. to be sure that everything is flexing properly and not binding, or damage to the vehicle could result. Be especially careful of the a/ c hoses at the firewall, the belt pulley, and at the core support. Ensure brake lines stretch while lifting. Bending the lines to gain ample slack may be necessary. Be extremely careful not to kink the lines. NOTE Ensure stock bushings and body mounting pads stay on vehicle unless otherwise specified in these instructions. Kit spacer blocks are installed in addition to the stock bushings and body mounting pads. c. Remove nut (99), bushing (100) with captive washer (101), and bolt (97) with captive washer (102) from the passenger side core support mounting pad (103) and passenger side frame mounting pad (104). d. Remove two nuts (105), washers (106), and bolts (98) with captive washers (107) from the passenger side frame mounting pads (104) and cab mounting pads (108). 11

12 2. Lift cab and install cab passenger side spacer blocks. a. Using a hydraulic jack and a wooden block, slowly lift the cab (96) passenger side just high enough to position the kit spacer blocks (109 and 110) on the frame mounting pads (104). b. Position three kit spacer blocks (109 and 110) on top of the passenger side frame mounting pads (104). Ensure mini blocks (109) are positioned at core support mounting pads (103). c. Remove three captive washers (102 and 107) from bolts (97 and 98). d. Install three captive washers (102 and 107) on kit bolts (111 and 112). e. Install a kit 3/8 x 7 1/2 bolt (111) and captive washer (102) through the cab passenger side core support mounting pad (103), kit mini spacer block (109), top bushing (113), frame mounting pad (104), bottom bushing (100), and washer (101) with kit 3/8 nylock nut (114). Do not tighten. f. Install a kit 3/8 x 6 bolt (112) and captive washer (107) through the cab floor (79), kit big spacer block (110), top bushing (113), frame mounting pad (104), bottom bushing (100), and washer (105) with kit 3/8 nylock nut (114). Do not tighten. g. Install a kit 3/8 x 6 bolt (112) and captive washer (107) through the cab floor (79), kit big spacer block (110), top bushing (113), frame mounting pad (104), bottom bushing (100), and washer (106) with kit 3/8 nylock nut (114). Do not tighten. h. Lower cab (96) on the kit spacer blocks (109 and 110). 3. Install the cab driver s side spacer blocks. a. Repeat steps C. 2. a. through h. for the cab driver s side. 4. Finish the cab spacer block installation. a. Adjust cab to bed clearance using the measurements from step C. 1. a. b. Remove six bolts (111 and 112) one at a time, coat threads with Loctite, and reinstall. Tighten to 55 lbft. 12

13 5. Install the bed passenger s side spacer blocks. a. Loosen but do not remove two bed mounting nuts (115) and four bed mounting bolts (116 and 117). b. Remove nut (115), washer (118), and three bolts (116 and 117) from the frame (10) and the bed (76) passenger s side. 13

14 c. Using a hydraulic jack and a wooden block, slowly lift the bed (76) passenger s side just high enough to position three kit spacer blocks (109 and 110) on the frame mounting pads (104). Ensure mini blocks (109) are positioned at rear mounting pads (104). d. Install two kit 12mm x 1.25 x 110mm bolts (119) and kit 1/2 USS washers (120) up through the frame mounting pads (104), kit spacer blocks (110), and in the bed (76). Do not tighten. e. Position kit 1/2 x 4 bolt (121) and kit 1/2 USS washer (120) through the frame mounting pads (104), kit spacer blocks (109), and the bed (76). Install kit 1/2 USS washer (120) and kit 1/2 nylock nut (122). Do not tighten. f. Lower the bed onto the spacer blocks (109 and 110). 6. Install the bed driver s side spacer blocks. a. Repeat steps C. 5 a. through f. for the bed driver s side. 7. Finish the bed spacer block installation. a. Adjust the cab to bed clearance using the measurements from step C. 1. a. b. Remove six bed mounting bolts (119 and 121) one at a time, coat threads with Loctite, and reinstall. Tighten to 55 lb-ft. 14

15 8. Inside the cab. WARNING Be careful not to damage any of the parts attached to the shift levers during cutting and welding or damage to the equipment could result. A certified welder should perform all welding. NOTE Steps 9 a. through m. are for manual transmission vehicles only. Steps 8 c., d., and e. pertain to 4wd vehicles only. 9. Lengthen and install the transmission shift lever and the transfer case shift lever. a. Scribe a line along the side of the gearshift lever (82) (below the bend) as shown. Cut the lever into two pieces through the line and deburr as necessary. b. Position kit gearshift lever extension (123) between the two pieces of the gearshift lever (82). Ensure the extension and lever scribed lines align and weld the extension in place. 15

16 c. Scribe a line along the side of the 4wd shift lever (83) as shown. Cut the lever into two pieces through the line and deburr as necessary. d. Position kit 4wd shift lever extension (124) between the two pieces of the 4wd shift lever (83). Ensure the extension and lever scribed lines align and weld the extension in place. 16

17 e. Position 4wd shift lever (83) in transmission (87) and install the c-clip (88). f. Position gearshift lever (82) in transmission (87), press down on tab (86), and turn lever clockwise to install. g. Check transmission shift lever and 4wd shift lever operation. Ensure there is complete engagement in all gears and ranges. h. Install adapter plate (85) on cab floor (79) with four screws (84). i. Install knobs (79 and 80) on 4wd shift lever (83) and gearshift lever (82). j. Install plastic tray (78) on cab floor (79) with four screws (77). 17

18 NOTE Step 9 k. for standard cab vehicles will not replace storage covers, replace carpet only. k. Install two rubber caps (92) in cab floor (79), replace carpet (92) and two storage covers (94 and 95). l. Install two rubber caps (93) in cab floor (79) and smooth carpet (92) into cab front corners. m. Install two kick panels (91) and two scuff plates (90) on cab floor (79) with eight screws (89). 18

Any spark could cause an explosion or fire resulting in serious personal injury and property damage. 10. Lengthen and install fuel filler. a. Remove bolt (125) from fuel filler neck (126) and frame (10). b. Remove eight screws (127) from fuel filler neck (126) and gas tank (128) and remove fuel filler neck from vehicle. c. Remove two clamps (129) and vent hose (130) from fuel filler neck (126). d. Drill a 5/16 hole in weldment (131). e. Cut fuel filler neck (126) in half as shown. f. Install kit filler hose extension (132) on fuel filler neck (126) with two kit #28 clamps (133). g. Install kit vent hose (134) with two kit #10 clamps (135). h. Install kit ground wire (136) on weldment (131) with kit 1/4 x 1 bolt (137), two kit 1/4 SAE washers (138) and kit nylock nut (139). 19

20 i. Position fuel filler neck (126) on gas tank (128) and install eight screws (127). j. Install fuel filler neck (126) and other end of ground wire (136) on frame (10) with bolt (125). k. Install filler surround (75) on bed (76) with four screws (74). l. Install gas cap (73). 11. Install the steering shaft. a. Position kit extension (140) on the steering shaft (66) as shown. Slide kit extension up shaft. b. Line up marks and position rag joint (67) on the kit extension (140). Do not tighten. c. Slide rag joint (67) down and position on the rack and pinion shaft (68). Line up marks. d. Slide kit extension (140) down for best position as shown and tighten three bolts (69, 70, and 141). 20

21 12. Install the radiator and a/c condenser. a. Position kit 2 cut hose (142) around nut (143) as shown. Secure with kit zip tie (144). b. Remove a/c line (42) from clip (145). c. Remove bolt (146) and clamp (147) from a/c line (42) and a/c condenser (47), turn clamp around, and reinstall with bolt. d. Position two kit 1/4 x 1 1/2 bolts (148) and kit 3/8 SAE washers (149) through core support (28) as shown. e. Install two kit brackets (150) on core support (28) with two kit 1/4 x 1 bolts (151), four kit 1/4 SAE washers (152), two kit 3/8 SAE washers (149), and two kit 1/4 nylock nuts (153). Do not tighten. f. Install two kit brackets (154) on core support (28) with two bolts (34). Do not tighten. g. Install two brackets (46) on kit brackets (154) with two kit 1/4 x 1 bolts (151), four kit 1/4 SAE washers (152), and two kit 1/4 nylock nuts (153). Do not tighten. 21

22 h. Install radiator (35) and two brackets (46) on core support (28) with two bolts (34). Do not tighten. i. Install radiator (35) on two kit brackets (150) with two bolts (34). j. Position two kit brackets (155) in slots on a/c condenser (47) and over kit bolts (148) from step d. above. k. Install two kit 1/4 SAE washers (152) and kit 1/4 nylock nuts (153) on kit bolts (148). l. Tighten nuts (153) and bolts (34, 148, and 151). Turn fan by hand and ensure fan does not hit radiator. m. Loosen bolt (156) and bracket (39) around accumulator (157). Position kit bracket (158) on bracket stud (159) and kit bracket stud (160) in hole in core support (28). n. Start kit 1/4 SAE washer (152) and kit 1/4 nylock nut (153) on kit bracket stud (160) and nut (38) on bracket stud (159). o. Adjust accumulator (157) so it does not contact bolt (110) and tighten two nuts (38 and 153) and bolt (156). 22

23 p. Secure two lines (42 and 161) with kit zip tie (162). q. Return horn (49) to original position, tighten bolt (50), and connect harness (48). 13. Under the hood. a. Carefully bend two coiled brake lines (163) so they do not contact driver s side wheel well (31). b. Install vacuum line (61) in stock top clip (62) location and axle vent line clip (65). 23

24 c. Install kit bracket (164) on driver s side wheel well (31) with bolt (59). d. Install vacuum/electrical interface (60) on kit bracket (164) with kit 1/4 SAE washer (152) and kit 1/4 nylock nut (153). n. Check battery positive cable (2) length. If positive cable is not long enough to reach the battery (3), remove two positive battery cable brackets (56 and 58) from clamps (165). o. Remove two clamps (165) from cable (2), move clamps up 1 1/2 on cable and reinstall. g. Install kit bracket (166) on frame (10) with bolt (57). h. Install two positive battery cable brackets (56 and 58) in clamps (165). i. Install bracket (58) on kit bracket (166) with kit 1/4 x 1 bolt (151), kit 1/4 SAE washer (152), and kit 1/4 nylock nut (153). j. Install positive battery cable bracket (56) on driver s side wheel well (31) with bolt (55). 24

25 k. Install radiator overflow bottle (33) on core support (28). l. Adjust hose (167) and install cap (32) on radiator overflow bottle (33). m. Position battery tiedown (30) in hole on driver s side wheel well (31) and install bolt (29). n. Remove harness clamp (51) from harness (168), turn clamp upside down and reinstall. o. Remove bolt (169) and bracket (52) from firewall (170). Turn bracket upside down as shown and reinstall with bolt. p. Install harness clamp (51) on bracket (52). q. Carefully bend a/c line (42) enough to install clamp (41) on passenger s side wheel well (43) with bolt (40). r. Push to compress six clips (26) and install grille (27) on core support (28). Ensure grille (27) is completely installed and accumulator (157) does not contact grille. 25

26 14. Install the front bumper. a. Remove two bolts (171) and two low impact crush zones (172) from frame (10). Swap crush zones side-for-side, turn them upside down, and reinstall. b. Trim top of front bumper (7) in two places as shown. 26

27 c. Mark bumper to trim around crush zones. Trim bottom of front bumper (7) in two places as shown. d. Coat threads of bolts (11 and 174) with Loctite. e. Install two kit side bumper brackets (173) on frame (10) with four bolts (11). Do not tighten. f. Test fit front bumper (7). Ensure bumper does not contact accumulator (157) or a/c lines (42 and 161). g. Install front bumper (7) on two kit side bumper brackets (173) with four kit 7/16 x 1 bolts (174), eight kit 7/16 USS washers (175), and four kit 7/16 nylock nuts (176). h. Install front bumper (7) on front fenders (8) with two locknuts (6). 27

28 i. Install two parking light lamps (4) in parking lights (5). j. Adjust bumper to body clearance and tighten bolts (11 and 174) to 55 lb-ft. WARNING The following procedure is intended only to enhance the appearance of the vehicle. The rear bumper will no longer be rated for towing of any kind. Towing with the rear bumper after it has been lifted can result in death, serious personal injury, or damage to the vehicle. Towing after the bumper has been lifted should be accomplished using a rated Class III receiver type hitch. 15. Install the rear bumper. a. Coat threads of bolts (22,25, and 174) with Loctite. b. Install two kit brackets (177) on two rear bumper brackets (24) with four kit 7/16 x 1 bolts (174), eight kit 7/16 USS washers (175), and four kit 7/16 nylock nuts (176). Do not tighten. c. Position two kit brackets (177) on frame (10) and install four bolts (22) and two nuts (25). Do not tighten. d. Adjust the bumper to bed clearance and tighten bolts (22, 25, and 174) and nuts (23 and 176) to 55 lb-ft. e. Connect two connectors (19) on license plate lights (18) and install lights on rear bumper (16) with two screws (17). 28

29 f. If equipped with hitch (12), reinstall hitch wiring (13) and connectors (14) with fasteners (15). g. Attach hitch wiring (13) to frame (10) with kit zip ties (157) as necessary. 16. Weld two kit bed crush blocks (178) on frame (10) as shown. D. After installation is complete. 1. Connect both battery cables to the battery (3). Be sure to reconnect the positive cable (2) first, then the negative cable (1). 2. Install Gap Guards TM in front and rear wheel wells (you did order your gap guards, didn t you?). 3. Stick kit warning sticker on the dash in plain sight of all vehicle occupants. 29

30 4. Double check the vehicle. CAUTION Retorque all fasteners after 500 miles and after off road use. All body lift components should be visually inspected and fasteners retorqued during routine vehicle servicing. a. Check all mounting hardware to ensure it is properly tightened. b. Check all wires, hoses, cables, etc. to ensure they have been properly connected and there is ample slack. With the number of hoses on this vehicle, it is vital that this be checked thoroughly. c. Check vehicle electrical system. d. Start vehicle and check the steering in both directions to ensure that there is no bind. Check clutch operation. Check the operation of the brake system and the parking brake. Check both shift levers operation. Ensure that there is proper engagement in all gears and 4 wheel drive ranges. NOTE All warranty information, instruction sheets, and other documents regarding the installation of this product must be retained by the vehicle owner. Information contained in the instructions and on the warranty card will be required for any warranty claims. The vehicle owner needs to understand the modifications made to his vehicle and how they affect vehicle handling and performance. Failure to provide the customer with this information can result in damage to the vehicle and severe personal injury. Only fill the cooling system if the cap has been removed while the vehicle was still cold. e. Check coolant level. Fill coolant to the proper level (refer to the Owner s Manual). f. Test drive vehicle in all gears and 4 wheel drive ranges. Pay close attention to all vehicle systems. Check all hardware again in 500 miles and as part of your regular maintenance schedule. CAUTION Performance Accessories does not recommend any particular wheel and tire combinations for use with its body lifts and cannot assume responsibility for the customer s choice of wheels and tires. Reference your owner's manual for recommended tire sizes and warnings related to the use of oversized tires. Larger wheel and tire combinations increase stress and wear on steering and suspension components, which leads to increased maintenance and higher risk for component failure. Larger wheel and tire combinations also alter speedometer calibration, braking effectiveness, center of gravity, and handling characteristics. Consult with an experienced local off road shop to find what wheel and tire combinations work best with your vehicle. 30
