27 04/01/11 page 1.27 Pouring Lightweight Concrete The pouring of lightweight concrete must be a part of the early planning stages. The finalized floor plans showing the exact position of walls, fixtures, etc. are necessary. As soon as the plywood floor deck of the building is in place, use the following steps to prepare for and pour the lightweight concrete. Step 1: Mark the location of all interior and exterior walls on the floor deck. Step 2: Cover the deck with a transparent 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier, or spray with a suitable sealer/bond breaker. This will limit water penetration into the plywood and prevent bonding between the plywood and concrete. Step 3: Fasten 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 bottom plates to the floor at all locations where walls or partitions will be placed. Step 4: Block off for any plumbing stacks, ventilation ducts, etc. that will not be routed through partitions. Use 2 x framing lumber for blocks. These blocks can later be lifted or sawed out as necessary for the passage of mechanical systems. Step 5: Place the tubing on the floor, routed to the manifold location. Step 6: Pressure test. Step 7: Coat the edges of all wall plates and blocks with suitable bond-breaker material. Step 8: The floor is now ready for concrete. The 2 x wall plates serve as a guide for the 1.5 thick slab. Step 9: Float or trowel the concrete as required for the finishing floor material. Step 10: Framing, on the now flat floor deck, with a second plate and wall system can be started the following day.
