1 Page 1 of 5 SLP PIPE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS #09-9 & # & NEWER POLARIS INDY 650 & RXL PIPE SET EFFECTIVE 6-92 READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL PIPE SET #09-9 (For stock engine, RXL* or carbureted) "S" marked on headpipe. #09-10 (for trail ported engines with carbs only) "P" marked on headpipe. NOTE: *RXL MODEL must be used with the #70-G90 Clicker Chip to reprogram the EFI for the pipe set. Failure to do so could cause engine failure and/or poor performance. A. Reverse kit cannot be used with the triple pipe set. B. It is best to check ignition timing and adjust if needed before removing stock exhaust system. If adjustment is needed, the best time to remove the recoil for adjustment is when the stock exhaust system is removed. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Remove standard muffler, silencer, and "Y" pipe from the sled. Retain exhaust gaskets, nuts, and springs. Remove rear muffler support bracket. Remove stock belly pan outlet by drilling out pop rivets and retain this part to be installed in a new location. NOTE: Before installing pipes, it is recommended to cut with a hole saw the four 1½" holes in the plastic behind the nose cone to improve air flow for improved performance. 2. Install three exhaust flanges on cylinders with the original gaskets and nuts. Cover original outlet hole with flat aluminum plate provided with kit. Install the MAG and PTO heat shields. NOTE: For best pipe fit, the MAG heat shield must fit the contour of the shock tower. This shield can be shaped easily by pushing it into the shape of the top of the shock tower. 3. Install the MAG pipe first, silencer assembly second, PTO pipe third, and the CENTER pipe last. Mark for the new exit hole, remove pipes, install original outlet plate in the new location using the 3/16" steel pop ribets provided. Reinstall pipes. IGNITION TIMING IGNITION TIMING - For best performance and dependability, the ignition timing must be correct on any snowmobile. Occasionally the timing is not correct from the factory or it can change slighty with time and miles. Use the following timing specification for the models listed. NOTE: the high RPM timing, this specification is the most important since the engine is run in that area most. If the low RPM timing si off slightly it will still perform well. Timing marks on the flywheel should be checked with a dial indicator to insure accuracy. Occasionally the marks are not correct. By using a high RPM strobe type timing light (see SLP catalog tool section)

2 Page 2 of 5 the timing can be checked on the flywheel or clutch stationary sheeve by using dial to make marks. CAUTION! WHEN USING MARKS ON STATIONARY SHEEVE OF THE ENGINE CLUTCH, ENGINE CLUTCH COVER MUST BE LOCKED IN PLACE WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING! It is best to rune engine with belt removed, clutch cover locked in place, then gently throttle up to test RPM INDY 650 (01 ENGINE) 27 degrees at 3000 RPM ±2 degrees, 20 degrees at 7500 RPM ±½ degree & NEWER RXL &CARBURETED INDY 650 (02 ENGINE) 24 degrees at 3000 RPM ±2 degrees, 18 degrees at 7500 RPM ±½ degree INDY 650 (03 ENGINE) 25 degrees at 3000 RPM ±2 degrees, 19 degrees at 7500 RPM ±½ degree. CARBURETOR TUNING IMPORTANT NOTES: (For RXL information, refer to instructions included with the SLP/Chopper City Clicker Chip #70-G90.) 1. The following carburetor specifications are a beginning point only, due to your particular use and atmosphere, jetting may need to be slightly richer or leaner. Always start rich and lean it down step by step to get exact jetting. 2. The following specifications are for use with the air box in place with either of the options listed. Removing the air box requires richer main jets and needle jets to prevent lean mixture burn down. 3. SLP recommends the use of exhaust gas temperature gauges (EGT) for precise carb tuning. See the SLP catalog for optional gauges. 4. Some 650 models come equipped without the 6DH4 needle. Inspect the needle number your sled is equipped with and change to the 6DH4 if needed. NEEDLE CLIP POSITION - The last digit in the tuning spec is the clip position. Such as 6DH4-3, the "3" would be the third clip form the top (top position being #1). OPTION #1: Stock air box with foam removed with plastic plate retained and in place. The plastic plate will keep intake noise at a lower level. A. Stock 38 m/m round slide carbs. Bored stock carb to 39.2 m/m. One step richer main jet than above chart and one needle clip position richer. EXHAUST TEMPERATURE READINGS Specifications are for use with SLP gauges and probes. Follow instructions with gauge kit mounting. The temperature readings are for use with SLP triple pipe set with probe mounted within 6-8" from exhaust flange gasket. 1/4 throttle, degrees 1/2 throttle, degrees 3/4 throttle, degrees Full throttle, degrees

4 Page 4 of 5 With the engine water at running temperature, begin with low throttle settings first. It is best to run about 1/8th mile or more to stabilize EGT for your reading. Adjust low and midrange with the needle clip position to achieve proper temperature and throttle response. When the midrange is tuned continue with full throttle jetting in the same manner. Never test full throttle position first, if midrange is lean it could cause a deceleration siezure. CLUTCH TUNING NOTE: Due to different riding conditions and riders weight, it may be necessary to use lighter or heavier weights or springs to tune RPM to the proper peak running area. The following tuning specifications are the average for each altitude listed. Tuning parts are available from SLP. LOW ALTITUDE: ' Weight Arm - 10M Blue (47.5 gram) # Driven spring average setting - #2 hole, increase if needed HIGH ALTITUDE: 5000' & ABOVE Weight Arm - 10M Red (44 gram) # Driven spring average setting - #3 hole, increase if needed OPTIONAL LOW ALTITUDE CLUTCHING Weight Arm - 10M White (46 gram) # Helix - 40/36 multi-angle, SLP #40-40/36 Driven spring - Dark Purple, SLP #40-1, begin in hole #3 GEARING Suggested gearing with the SLP trail pipes for general purpose is 20 tooth top sprocket and 35 tooth bottom sprocket. Or a 22 tooth top sprocket and a 39 tooth bottom sprocket to achieve a similar ratio. For speed run or fast lake racing a larger top sprocket can be used. for deep snow or hillclimbing.
