1 Caterpillar Product Information Salesgram May 2004 Caterpillar Releases the PS-300C and PF-300C Pneumatic Tire Compactors With its 3000 kg maximum wheel load (3300 kg for the Added Weight option), the new PS-300C and PF-300C share many of the industry proven design and performance characteristics of the Caterpillar PS-300B and PF-300B Series Pneumatic Tire Compactors. In addition to these characteristics, the PS-300C and PF-300C Powershift transmission feature the new "soft shift" function allowing smooth operation when changing travel direction. The PS-300C and PF-300C have been updated with emissions certified engines to comply with European EU stage II regulations. For Dealer Sales Personnel

2 The PS-300C and PF-300C are seven-wheel pneumatic compactors and are identical except for the rear suspension systems. They are production machines well-suited to work on base, sub-base or wear course materials, offering the kneading action and high weight per wheel required for certain applications. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, well-graded gravel jobs, reclamation or stabilization projects, industrial sites and other medium to large compaction jobs. Both the PS-300C and PF-300C are aimed at private contractors, governmental agencies or rental customers. The PS-300C and PF-300C would be the machine of choice where power, overall productivity, versatility or higher resale value are primary buying criteria and customers require and are willing to pay for these added-value features. Due to the nature of the work performed by pneumatic compactors, it is common for machine life to be long, and customers will buy with this in mind. Customers have come to expect the commitment Caterpillar has made to parts availability and service support. This, combined with the productivity of the PS-300C and PF-300C, will influence customers to buy Caterpillar. They know that the Cat dealer can support their equipment over the life of their machines. Engine These two new models are powered by the four cylinder caterpillar 3054C series diesel engine designed to offer outstanding performance, quiet operation and excellent fuel economy. The PS-300C and PF-300C are turbocharged with a gross power rating of 75 kw (100 hp) at 2200 rpm. The engine meets European EU Stage II emissions control standards worldwide. 1 2 The PS-300C and PF-300C feature a new "soft shift" function allowing smooth operation when changing travel direction. 1 Modulator Valve 2 Control Valve Propel System The transmission is a mechanical design that includes a high-efficiency torque converter and three-speed clutch actuated Powershift transmission attached to the engine flywheel housing. The transmission supplies torque to a fixed-ratio axle (differential with chain drive sprockets) through a drive shaft. Final reduction is accomplished with the sizing of the chain drive sprockets located between the axle and the wheels. At the output of the axle, four chains drive the individual rear wheels. The PS/PF-300C powershift transmission features a new "soft shift" function allowing smooth operation when changing travel direction. It integrates a complete modulation circuit that includes a differential pressure regulator and a spring-loaded accumulator. Supply flow from the control valve (1) to the modulator valve (2) and clutch is limited by a flow limiting orifice. When forward or reverse direction is selected, the modulator valve provides a steady rise of clutch pressure, which increases the clutch driving torque, and results in a smooth clutch application. The entire modulator sequence occurs in less than 2 seconds. 2

3 The PS-300C and PF-300C are equipped with a Traction Control system that provides better tractive effort in slippery conditions. When the operator senses the machine has lost traction and is spinning, he simply presses and holds the foot switch located at the side of the steering console. The switch controls a pneumatic distributor that actuates a mechanical lock between the right and left shafts. When the rear differential is locked, the rear wheels turn at the same speed. This will help minimize tire slippage. The differential lock will automatically disengage when the torque level lowers. Effective Suspension On both PS-300C and PF-300C, the front wheels are mounted on hydraulic cylinders that allow wheels to move vertically, maintaining equal weight per wheel. The 120 mm vertical movement allows the wheels to seek out soft spots, helping reach density requirements in the fewest passes. A hydraulic valve controls the amount of movement of the three front wheels. The valve controls oil flow into the cylinders, either increasing or decreasing the wheels vertical distance from the compactor s body. Oil flow to the cylinders comes from a gear pump that operates in tandem with the steering and braking pump. Suspension pressure and height gauges are located on the instrument panel. On the PF-300C, the rear wheels are mounted rigid to the frame. This machine has been designed for applications where the machine will be working principally on bituminous material, (the base course has already been compacted to a uniform density) or on chip and seal application. The front suspension allows for respecting the road design and offers the ability to seek out soft spots. The PS-300C has not only the front, but also the two inner rear wheels mounted on hydraulic cylinders. The front and the rear wheels are interconnecting hydraulically keeping the same weight per wheel between the front and rear of the machine. This design is called isostatic with three points of pressure. This isostatic design offers uniform weight distribution to all of the wheels. The PS-300C is designed for compaction jobs that vary from wearing to base course material or behind a reclaimer in cold-recycling applications. The front and rear suspensions make this a truly versatile machine. 3

4 Comfortable and Simple to Operate The operator s station on the 300C-Series Pneumatic Tire Compactors offers superior comfort, visibility and ease of operation. A bolt-on, two post ROPS canopy or a cab with ROPS is available. For easy operation, gauges and controls move with the console and the seat. The seat slides from side to side and locks into four operating positions: right side, center, mid-way to left, and left side. The seat swivels up to 30 degrees to allow the operator to see the rear of the machine without any effort. Machine gauges are located on the front of the steering column for easy reference during machine operation. The instrument panel contains the fuel gauge, hourmeter, speedometer, transmission oil temperature gauge, engine coolant temperature gauge and engine oil pressure gauge. The following gauges are visible from any seated position: clutch pressure, tire pressure (option), and wheel load (option). The instrument panel also contains the start switch and five warning indicators: low oil pressure in brake circuits, hydraulic filter restriction, turn signals, traction control activated and alternator malfunction. A glow plug starting aid switch is used to assist engine starting in cold weather. The propel lever and parking brake switch are located to the right of the operator s seat for convenient one-handed operation. The right console with grouped switches puts all controls within easy operator reach. It also includes switches for the following items: gear selection, water spray control option, air-on-the run option, lights, turn signals, suspension control system and horn. When equipped with a cab, the PS-300C and PF-300C contains one access door, tinted safety glass windows, electric wipers front and rear, heater/defroster, two vertically sliding side windows for ventilation, two exterior rear view mirrors, interior dome light and a coat hook. The suspension seat is fully adjustable to include fore and aft positions, bottom cushion height, backrest angle, headrest angle, armrests angle, suspension stiffness setting and a 76.5 mm wide retractable seatbelt. The machine also features a rubber floor mat on the operator s platform that provides sure footing and also reduces noise for the operator. When equipped with an open platform, the draining seat is adjustable to provide fore and aft adjustments. The operator s platform is enclosed by handrails for sure footing on machines. A lockable cover protects instrumentation and gauges. Low sound levels at the operator s station and at ground level allow for greater operator comfort and less noise emitted to the surrounding environment. The engine sloped hood allows the operator to see obstacles measuring 1 meter (3 3 ) high and 1 meter (3 3 ) to rear of the machine. The ergonomic operator s station allows a clear view of the work area. It also allows the operator to see the tire edge contact point when the seat is moved either on the right or left side of the machine. 4

5 Caterpillar Serviceability The engine durable one-piece fiberglass hood tilts forward with the use of two gas charged struts located just inside the hood compartment. Daily service points are accessible from ground level. The hood can be locked when closed with a locking device. The operator s station tilts backward. When opened, both the wide-opening engine hood and operator s station offer easy access to power train components. The front durable one-piece fiberglass hood tilts backward and allows access to suspension cylinder ends and provides a roomy storage compartment. This storage compartment has been designed to fit front and rear tire wind shields option when job application does not require this optional attachment. The ballast compartments can be tilted outward to provide access to the entire drive-train, uncommon on most pneumatic compactors sold today. Other features that make servicing these machines simple include leakresistant O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings, grouped pressure test ports and S O S SM valves. 5

6 The electrical system uses two 12-volt maintenance-free Cat batteries that are connected in series to provide 24-volts and 750 cold cranking amps. The batteries are located in the left side at the front of the machine and are protected by the left ballast compartment. All electrical wiring is color-coded, numbered and labeled with component identifiers to simplify troubleshooting. Plus, nylon-braided wrap and allweather connectors ensure high system reliability. Parts commonality including pumps and motors with other caterpillar equipment make servicing easier for mechanics. Versatile and Productive Options The optional Air-on-the-Run consists of a tire Inflation system controlled from the operator s station. This system quickly regulates the tire pressure with a water-cooled compressor that provides long service life. The Steel Ballast Blocks option includes four removable blocks that increase vehicle weight. Each block provides an additional 1750 kg for increased versatility. The location of the steel ballast blocks results in a low center of gravity, providing excellent stability. Most competitive pneumatic compactors can be ballasted with sand and water. Once sand or water is added, it is rarely removed, eliminating the possibility to vary the weight. Heavy pneumatic compactors that gain their weight with water ballast sacrifice uniform compaction because the weight per wheel can vary. For instance, water will flow back and forth creating inconsistent loads on the front and rear axles. Competitive machines that have water and sand ballasts also have a serviceability handicap because the ballast material must be removed to access major power train components. Major power train components on the PS-300C and PF-300C can be serviced by removing the ballast blocks with a 2 ton crane, found on most service trucks or low boys. The Added weight option is a specific frame design that increases the preballasted machine weight by approximately 2100 kg to offer a 3300 kg maximum wheel load. The optional Recording Module provides a visual gauge for reading work time, machine speed and distance covered. The Side Cutter option consists of a hydraulic cylinder controlled by a switch on the dashboard, a water spray system (intermittent or continuous) with an easy to clean nozzle oriented on the tool and 3 tools for a great versatility. Two discs for cutting and straightening road edges pavements and one roller with conic disc for edge consolidation. Water spray system The optional pressurized water spray system allows water to be sprayed over the drums. The system is controlled with a three-position switch on the control console. The three spray modes that are available include constant, off or intermittent. The intermittent mode conserves water and is useful on cool days or cooler mixes. 6

7 The system is fed by a 460 L (121 gal) polyethylene water tank located at the rear of the machine. The tank is resistant to deformation due to heating and cooling and has no internal coating. The black color helps to reduce the growth of algae in the water. The tank fill port allows quick, convenient refilling from all types of supply systems. To keep the system free of contaminants and ensure system integrity, the water is triple filtered. The water tank fill port is equipped with a basket strainer, an in-line replaceable filter is located between the tank and pump; and each spray nozzle incorporates a wire mesh filter in the nozzle. The tank is drained with a valve. The lines between the tank and spray bars are also drained with a valve. Spray bars are constructed of heat resistant plastic to help prevent corrosion and ensure uniform spray. The spray bars are equipped with brass/plastic spray nozzles, two per wheel. Each nozzle is adjustable for spray direction and is completely disassembled for cleaning without tools. The cocoa mats are included in the water spray system option to provide a scrubbing-type action and also retain water or solvent as it is distributed by the spray system. The cocoa mats then allow the liquid to seep out of them, providing continuous distribution. ROPS Canopy is a two-post type that bolts onto flanges integral with the frame. The structure meets ISO and ISO This structure blocks the operator s station from the sun. Cab with ROPS integrates a pivoting and sliding operator's console with a suspension seat that includes an adjustable fore/aft position and suspension stiffness setting, flip-up arm rests, a headrest and a 76.5 mm wide retractable seatbelt. The cab also contains one access door, tinted safety glass windows, electric wipers front and rear, heater/defroster, two vertically sliding side windows for ventilation, two exterior rear view mirrors, interior dome light, coat hook. Cab with ROPS meets ISO and ISO Back-up Alarm emits a high-pitched sound when the machine is in reverse. Working Light Package illuminates the work area under dim or dark conditions. It consists of four variable adjustment floodlights, with two positioned forward and two rearward. Roading and Working Light Package includes directional turn indicators, high and low beam lights, and parking lights, in addition to the four working lights described above. Rotating Beacon includes an amber beacon that can be attached to machines with ROPS canopy or cab with ROPS. Tire Wind Shields help prevent the tires from cooling, which helps to eliminate asphalt from adhering to the tires. Treaded Tires Michelin 14/80-20 (F20). Spare Wheel is available for both smooth or treaded radial-ply tires. 7
